origin of Poulos

Posted by athina <erathin@hotmail.com> on Wed, 04 Feb 2004, in response to i'd like to know the origin of my name Poulos, posted by Ashley Poulos on Thu, 30 Oct 2003

Hi!

I speak Greek and I can assure you that the name Poulos is of Greek origin. However, it is usually not used on its own but rather as a suffix e.g. Papado-poulos, Vakalo-poulos, Dimitro-poulos. Alone it roughly means 'someone's offspring'. It basically refers to the bloodline connection between the given name and the offspring. This explains that there should be an original name, otherwise it doesn't really make sense.
p.s. the word Ellino-poulos means 'child of Greek origin'.
