Yaqui history and genealogy

Posted by Kathi <cougar67@harbornet.com> on Wed, 13 Jul 2005, in response to Learning About indigenous Mexico, posted by John Schmal on Sun, 15 Aug 2004

John,
You seem to be knowledgeable about the Yaqui tribe as well as Old Mexico. I've noticed that many people have Yaqui roots, but know little or nothing about their ancestors or how to find them. I'm in the same boat, I guess. I have family born in Mexico, who came to California in the early 1900's. I understand that some of the children in the Yaqui community there were taken to live in barrack style housing, and taught to speak English and strongly discouraged from speaking Yaqui. Do you know anything about this, or about the Yaqui community in either San Diego or Imerial, CA circa 1930? Is there any information available out there on the list of original Yaqui Tribe members when the they were recognized by the government? If your ancestors were never officially members, and were from Mexico rather than Arizona, what is the best approach to establishing a Yaqui blood line?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide,
Kathi
