Researching Berlanga Last Name

Posted by Graciela <gcortez@swbell.net> on Thu, 09 Jun 2005, in response to Berlanga, posted by Ben on Wed, 23 Feb 2005

I have been tracing my Berlanga roots for several years. My father is deceased. He was named after his grandfather, Teodoro Berlanga. My grandfather's name was Pedro Berlanga born in either Montemorelos, Nuevo Leon or Rayones, Nuevo Leon. My great grandfather Teodoro Berlanga and his father (my great, great grandfather) Juan Berlanga were from Rayones, Nuevo Leon. In the summer of 2000, I searched the Historical Archives of the state of Nuevo Leon in Monterrey and only had time to search the Rayones birth registration manuals dating as far as the archives had records of which was 1867. This is where I found the birth records of one of my father's uncles, Martimiano Berlanga who was registered as the son of Teodoro Berlanga (my great grandfather). This is a direct record that my great grandfather lived in Rayones, Nuevo Leon. The birth document also states Martimiano's grandfather as being Juan Berlanga (my great, great grandfather). There were also another big family of like 14 or 17 brothers and sisters including names such as Jesus, Juan, Antonio, etc.. that were part of Mariano Berlanga's family who I suspect may have been the father of Juan Berlanga, thus Mariano would be my great, great, great, grandfather (1780's or 1790s period). But prior to the 1790s, all I know is that one of Monterrey's first founders was a Berlanga in 1580s). I would like to learn more of Berlanga's in the Monterrey area prior to the 1790s so I can trace my roots to them. I researched the Castle/Castillo Berlanga Duero in Spain and am very intrigued to learn where the name origintated from to name the castle Berlanga. I also wonder if the name of the castle and the village then was adopted by some of the people there and thus travelled to America and to Mexico. What do you think? I recently learned the univision journalist Martin Berlanga as well as former TExas legislator Hugo Berlanga form part of my Berlanga family tree.

I will be travelling to Monterrey this summer again and plan on continuing my research there. Please share what you know of our last name. By the way we live in North Texas and my father and mother lived in Tamaulipas.

Sincerely,
Graciela (Gracie) Berlanga-Cortez (librarian)
