Mimbres Apaches
Posted by George Fimbres <GeorgeFimbres@sbcglobal.net> on Wed, 08 Jun 2005, in response to FIMBRES FAMILY, posted by Shannon Fimbres on Fri, 03 Jun 2005
Thanks for your post, because of it I was able to come up with some more interesting information regarding the Fimbres clan. From around 700-1200 A.D. Indians known as Mimbres (part of the Chiricahua Indians) lived in what is now southwestern New Mexico. They had a cultured civilization and are known for their artistic pottery. They lived near the Mimbres River. Actually they lived in the broader area of where Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora, and Chihuahua meet. Like the Cimbres's from Denmark, they disappeared except for a few.
The Mimbres Indians, or "Mimbrenos," (are part of the Chiricahua Apaches to which Geronimo, Cochise, and other famous Indians belonged).
The best known of the Mimbreno Indians were Mangas Coloradas, and Victorio. Victorio was considered by some to be the greatest Indian general/warrior ever.
In the 1930's some of the last Apaches, a group of about 25, hid in the Sonoran mountains. Following the kidnapping of his son and of his wife's murder (Maria) in 1927 at the hands of Chief Juan's women, Francisco Fimbres, a Sonoran rancher, sought to avenge his wife's death by paying Americans and Mexicans to kill all remaining Apaches. It made headlines, and books are written about it.
By the way, Geronimo's wife's name was Juana and I think she was from the Mimbres tribe.
