Martha Gray, b. 1835, d. aft 1860 of Gray Station, TN, wife of Amos Davis
Posted by Jackie <jackieallen22153@aol.com> on Tue, 03 Apr 2007
I'm searching for any and all information about whom I believe are my gg grandparents Martha Gray and Amos Davis, of Carter Co., TN. My aunt Mabel, b. 1908, left a handwritten note stating that "my grandfather James Davis was b. 1857 TN and his mother was a Gray from Gray Station, TN."Amos is found in 20 Nov 1850 census, District 4, Carter, TN, at the age of 20, b. abt 1830, living with father Charles Davis 68, farmer, b. in VA, and Charles' 2nd wife [stepmother to Amos] Martha, and with his bro. John 23, his sister Sally 17. [I am quite sure Martha was Martha Denton m. to Charles Davis on 20 Mar 1833 in Washington Co., TN. [Charles 1st married Patsy Bennett on 17 Jul 1814 in Washington County. {VA?] Patsy b. abt 1775 d. abt 1833 around same time that a daughter was b. to Charles...named Sally.]
A Martha Gray married an Amos Davis in Carter Co., TN on 16 March 1854.
On the 27 Jul 1860 Carter TN Federal Census,Bakersfield P.O. Division 2, Amos Davis 30 yrs old, a blacksmith, was living with wife Martha 25 yrs old, and children John 4, James 3, and unnamed infant daughter 1 mo. old.
Since the Civil War was upon the country in the 1860s, I'm wondering if anyone has any info. about Amos' possible military involvement, his life, his death, or anything whatsoever about his wife Martha Gray. I'm hoping to connect some of these bits and pieces of information and appreciate any feedback.
