Searching for Scopinich Family Members

Posted by Terry (Scopin) Meek <terry3352@aol.com> on Thu, 16 Sep 2004

Hello,

My name is Terry Meek, my maiden name is Scopin. I've have been searching many geneology internet sites trying to find information about my family name of "Scopinich". My father's father (Joseph Scopinich) was born in Lussinpiccolo in 1890. His mother's name was Nicholleta - I don't know what her maiden name was. My grandfather said he was Itialian but it appears that that particular area was run by many other countries over the years. Supposedly when he was 15 he stowed away on a ship and came to the United States jumping ship before it docked. He had two sisters, Delores and Gulia - I'm not aware of any bothers. I think one sister married a Vidulich and the other possibly a Sabolich. One of the sisters moved to Johannisburg(spelling?), Africa and the other stayed in Yougoslavia. He married my grandmother, who was Mary Alice Rivenbark from Wallace, North Carolina. After they were married my grandmother had the name changed to Scopin. I've had difficulty finding exactly in which parish my grandfather was baptized. I think he was born on what is now called Mali Lusinj. My grandfather was a cabinet maker. He had his own business in bethesda Maryland, USA called "Scopin's" Upholstery. Later on my dad, Raymond James Scopin, (disceased Nov 2001) and his brother Joseph Scopin, Jr. changed the name of the business to "Scopin Brothers". From what I have seen on the internet, it seems that Scopinich was a very common name in Lussinpiccolo (this is how I found your site). If you could possibly shed some light on my family heritage, it would be greatly appreciated. My hope is someday to visit Mali Losinj to get a better understanding of my family background - - it would be especially good if I still had relatives there to meet.

Respectfully,
Terry Meek
