Posted by Sharyn Ward <jarrahlegh@iprimus.com.au> on Mon, 20 Jan 2003, in response to Cattarinich surname, posted by Linda on Fri, 08 Jun 2001
Hi Linda, Joe, Piero & VeronicaMy Great Great Grandfather was Nicola Antonio {known as Antonio} Catarinich, b. Austria he married Catherine/Catarina Maskline/Markline/Masquilina {I am still to work out which is the correct spelling of her surname}
Antonio was a Master Mariner and if my research is correct he was a crew member in 1872 on the "Tegetthoff" for an Antarctic Expedition.
Antonio & Catherine had 7 children
5 daughters - names unknown and 2 sons
Joseph B.1848, Dalmatia, Austria
Antonio Nicola B.abt 1866, Malinska, Austria
Joseph was also a Master Mariner and left Austria in the early 1870's and sailed to Australia via South Africa and India. He was naturalised in Melbourne, Victoria on March 9, 1880
Joseph married Margaret Mckenna October 9, 1877 and they had 7 children {their youngest daughter Mary [Molly] is my grandmother}
Joseph died in Melbourne, Victoria on 2 October 1923.
Antonio Nicola was also a Mariner and he migrated to Australia a few years after Joseph.
Antonio married Mary Agnes Hand 9 June 1897 and they had 3 daughters
Antonio died in Melbourne on 30 April 1942.
As you can see I have very limited information on the Catarinich family in Austria but hopefully the information I have posted will ring some bells with one of you
Hope to hear from you soon
Take Care
Sharyn
