Balkwills of Plymouth: I have letter and portrait..

Posted by philippa shanks <p.shanks@ntlworld.com> on Sat, 26 Jul 2003, in response to Balkwills from Devon, posted by Brian Balkwill on Wed, 31 Jul 2002

I was interested to read your message concerning the Balkwills of Plymouth, and the existance of a Balkwill pharmacy in Plymouth.

I have been trying to research into the Balkwills, as I own a sillouette of Sarah Balkwill, (daughter of Joseph Balkwill and Anne Payne) dated 1825 which also contains a love letter written by John Richardson, her husband on the event of their second wedding anniversary, dated 1827.

I came across the 1851 census and found that Sarah was visiting her younger brother, Charles (age 43), a "chemist and druggist", address, Norley Cottage, Norley Place, Plymouth. The brother was unmarried and living with one servant. I hope this may be of some help.
