Gullah/Geechee Ancestry

Posted by Senora Amos <SenAmo@aol.com> on Fri, 06 Jul 2001

I recently found out that my grandmother and her family grew up on the St Helena Island in Beaufort, SC.(gmother, b. 1910, aunt, b. 1892). As a child, I remember people calling my grandmother and her sisters "geechee" women. I did not understand what they were talking about. When I met my great aunt, I thought she was an african slave. She had an accent that was so heavy, I never knew what she was saying. My grandmother had to translate. I would like to find out more about my Geechee/Gullah heritage. My ancestral surnames are.."Pinckney and Green/e." Where do I start my search? Whom should I contact? Help!!

Thanks for any help you can give,
Senora Amos
