looking for baldwins

I am searching for info on my great-grand father John Baldwin as we know him. But he may have been a shipman at birth. We do know that his mother was slave and his father was a slave master.My grandfather is named Hector Campbell Baldwin. i just need to know as much as possible about the Baldwin and Shipman families. Plese help.
