Levi Baldwin A man of Colour

I am researching one of my Ancestors who settled in Birmingham England about 1811. A soldier and latterly a musician he was said to be born in North America about 1770 or if his age recorded at death is right about 1782.I know it is a long shot but has anyone any links or ideas as to his origins in the US.
