Chapters 1-7
This is not a summary for each chapter, it is one big summary.

Thomas Small is a boy that is moving to an old, big house in southwestern Ohio. Only his father has seen the house. Thomas is excited about moving. It turns out that the house was built over an Underground Railroad. Everyone liked the house except for Thomas’ two brothers, Billy and Buster. They were afraid of the house. After everyone else went in, Thomas was standing by the inside of the door with his brothers when he found a doorknob type thing. He did not know what it was but he pressed a button on it. Nothing seemed to happen but his brothers started screaming because behind Thomas the front steps of the house were about a foot off the ground and wide from their proper place, uncovering a deep black hole. Then out of the trees came a big black horse with a little girl on it and a boy following. They both were studying the hole. The boy was a son of Mr. Darrow named Mac and the girl just followed him around. They think part of the underground railroad could be under the steps. Thomas fell into the hole but he decided to keep following a path that was made. As he was walking he dropped his flashlight and he started walking back. He stopped because he heard someone in his path that he didn’t know so he started running the other way and hit a wooden wall. He was actually inside the wall of his house. After Thomas was back inside his father went in the tunnel but didn’t find or hear anything. Later that day Thomas was outside when he heard the noise again. This time he followed the noise which led him to a wooden door in the ground. Suddenly the doors opened and a fiery man came out of it. Thomas ran away screaming but the man grabbed him. Thomas managed to get away again and burst through the doors of the house breaking the locks. He slid on the floor landing under the kitchen table.
