You know how everyone says start from you and work backwards. That's probably what you will have to do to get a starting point. My family too is spread across America but what I did was started with my mother's parents and found a main conscentration which afforded me a wealth of information. All it takes is one relative (the right one to put you where you want to be). You also need to have an idea of what or who you are looking for. Hope this helps!
