Re: Couser Tree
Posted by Margie <OtMrg@aol.com> on Tue, 23 Mar 2004, in response to The Family, posted by Brandon Couser on Sun, 21 Mar 2004
Hi BrandonI only have my grandfathers tree beginning with him, Willie Phillip William Couser b Aug., 1889. He married Martha Mackey b March, 1889. They had five children John B, May B, Janie M, Earlie Mae and my father, Willie Phillip Couser. My father changed the spelling to Cousar. I have been trying to find out why my father changed the spelling of the surname. I am sure there were other children, because my grandparents were married in 1906. But, the Bible records shows the first child as John B b July, 1910. May be these children did not live to be counted in the census.
When I was born, my grandmother and my fathers siblings were deceased. My grand father died when I was about 6. My father died before I began to research.
I have found other Cousars, but I have not found a connection. I feel we are related because of our surname and these Cousars are great people.
I have collected a lot of information regarding the Couser, Cousar, Cowser, Cowsar, etc. of Lancaster, Chester, Sumter and other surrounding counties of South Carolina. I have found my grandparent and children in the 1920 and 1930 census.
I began my research with the latest census and worked backwards with no connection. I have started my research beginning with the 1870 census. But, I still have not found the ancestors.
After the Civil War, the slaves moved to different counties and used other spellings. Remember these slaves could not read or write. So, the person who recorded the information for the census used different spelling.
I live in Washington, DC. We moved to the area in 1963. I no my father, Willie, visited Baltimore. I do not know who he went to visit. My father was called Bro by many relatives.
I hope that we can make a connection. My email is MtOtg@aol.com Telephone 202-832-1066.
There is a Cousar Griffith Jamison family reunion in Las Vegas on Aug. 1-3. If you are interested my will email information.
I hope that you can understand what I have written. Every time I hear from a Couser or any other variation, I get excited. But the connection is not found. I guess its because of some kind of fear as to what have happen to split the families.
I believe that we are all relative. May be not by blood, but by the fact that we share the surname even with the different spelling. I would like to find out how we are all connected, even if its just that our ancestors live on the same farm or a farm of a slave owners brother or sister.
Where are you families origin? Do you have any birthdays or place of birth? Any information may lead to a connection.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Margie
