Alkebu-lan, meaning of

Posted by rsbain <rsbain@aol.com> on Mon, 05 Jan 2004, in response to Alkebu-lan, posted by Alan Mitchell on Mon, 29 Sep 2003

While I can't cite where you can go for confirmation (and, perhaps after all this time you have gotten answer to your question) Alkebu-lan is the ancestral name for the continent the the European so named Africa. Alkebu-lan means Land of the Blacks. It, if nothing else, is why we should opt to be called Blacks versus African-American which as a language tool describes what kind of American you are rather than what kind of "African". If we instead opted for American-African, we would be connected with our ancestors. More importantly, if we were Blacks, we would be connected with all other Blacks -- those on the continent and those in the diaspora. Remember that if DeClerk decided to buy a Park Avenue penthouse and move to New York City, he would be an African-American. Also remember that our Brothers and Sisters from Brazil, Haiti, Jamaica, etc. are connected to us as Blacks as are those that live in the UK and elsewhere in the world.
