Baldwins of Welches Creek Columbus County NC

Posted by Shelda Baldwin Glover <sheldaucmad@aol.com> on Thu, 30 Aug 2001

Looking for Researchers:

who have connected with their slave ancestry specifically from the the William Baldwin Plantation in the Bladen County Carver's Creek Lake Waccaumau area of North Carolina.

After Emancipation these exslaves built their own community named Welches Creek Township in the County of Columbus North Carolina.

My descendants are of mixed race and were bred on these plantations. My maternal connections are the Swindells who were bred on the Sam Swindell Plantation where the Baldwin Family Homestead is today.

The McCoys owned a large farm in the 1860s which Millie-Christine World Famous Conjoined Siamese Twins purchased for their parents, however this was short lived. My grandmother rented the land during the 1960s and there was one particular field named the "Pearlie McCoy" field, named after the twins neice.

Their nephew was Mr. Johnny McCoy my aunts dad. The twins lay in a common grave in the Welches Creek Cemetery.

During their life span, b. July 11, 1851 and d.Oct. 8th, and 9th 1912,they achieved great recognition in the US and abroad. If there is any McCoy descendants please contact me. I have an extensive collection of photos,ad cards, news articles, and personal letters.

I also have an extensive collection of memoribilia on the Baldwins, tax receipts, stock receipts, personal letters, original deeds, marriage records, death certificates, photos, graduation programs from 1913 including genealogy books that mention the above family members.

One of my family members just got the court documents where Jacob and Monemia took the slave owner to court to get their children. There were 14 siblings in all.

During reconstruction of the south, several African Americans from Welches Creek earned their doctorate degrees, founded their own businesses and purchased large tracks of land.

Dr. Oscar Brent Baldwin school teacher and medical doctor, Charles Clinton Spaulding entreprenuer founded the North Carlina Mutual Insurance Company, Dr. M. Bowen medical doctor, pharmacist, and store owner.

The events and histories of these families are compelling and undocumented.

The other surnames are Mitchell, Moore, Campbell, Spaulding, McCoy,and Shipman.

I have the division of the Sam Swindell slaves with quite a large list of slave family names.

I would love to make connections with the survivors of this holocaust from the 1870 free schedule for Welches Creek.

I am still trying to connect with the descendants of great grandpa Franks first set of children from first wife and exslave Martha.

They are Mahaley, Thessa, Ned, Ami, John, Oscar, Crandal, and Rachel. Children from the second wife Emily, my maternal great grandmother are: John Willie, John (infant died) Wylie, Bessie, Mollie, and Loubelle. They were born from 1895-1910. Great grandpa Frank fathered children until age 72 and was 34 years older than grandma Emily his second wife. Poor Martha didn't live beyound age 41 and probably died during childbirth. I need documented proof.

If you are aware of any migration histories, connecting lineages,or folks who lived in that community, historical events, landmarks, or notable blacks, the common folks who worked hard on their farms and most certainly unsung heros of Columbus County North Carolina, please, please respond to this post.

Yours in ancestor search,
Shelda Baldwin Glover
