Well,
I haven't tried to get school
record, except once and that
school denied me the records of
my Grandfather Dr. Charles Ellis
Johnson...but did confirm that
both he and my Uncle Dr. Hanson
Bryon JOHNSON did attend their
medical school.
However, I do have a story or to
that I can relate about things
that happened at school and how I
have done old school photos of my
mother, aunt and uncle.
As for my mother, it is
interesting how words change when
one moves from one part of the
country to another...especially
in the "old" days, that is before
radio and television changed our
lives so much. She was born in
East Texas, her mother my
grandmother Artie Miss JOHNSON,
nee PILGRIM was born in St.
James, Stone County, Arkansas. My
Grandfather Dr. Charles "Ellis"
JOHNSON who was then living in
East Texas, but had been raised
in Greenup Co., KY, took his
family back to Cincinnati, Ohio,
to do some update on his medical
education where he had gone to
medical school. When they got
there my Mom, Leitita was then in
second grade. Having come from
the part of the country that she
did, she was very aware of how
they correctly pronounced the
name of the state of Arkansas.
But, the teacher in Ohio became
very angry with my Mom when she
kept correcting the teacher. Her
teacher kept pronouncing Arkansas
as R-Kansas.....as in the state
of Kansas. Now while I can
understand her not knowing and my
mother correcting her, she got so
mad that she sent a note home to
my grandmother after she had
spanked my Mom in class for being
sassy and not following the
"correct" way of saying
Arkansas..... Well, the teach was
so surprised when my Grandmother
JOHNSON showed up at her door and
firmly chastised the teacher for
not only hitting her child, but
for the reason why...and then
correcting the teacher once again
in how the state of Arkansas
should have been said.... From
what my Mom said, the teacher was
quite contrite the next day in
class and had to re-teach all of
the other students.... It really
must have been quite something.
My Grandmother was one of the
most mild mannered people I have
ever known.
