Helpful Suggestions and more…

Where To Start…

Submitted by GFS RA@aol.com

Start with your self and work backwards...ask your parents, grands, aunts, uncles, cousins even friends of family..... Anyone that is willing to talk. Don’t give up keep after them someone will talk to you eventually.

Make sure you document everything with a tape recorder or video that way you don’t ask the same questions over and over...use this for future references and it also makes for a great memory saver.

Make sure you check, and double-check everything. Get Birth, Marriage, Death Certificates as they should (depending on informant) have some great info.. (I.e., dates and family names and places of happenings) Remember Talk to everyone, a Great way to get them to talk is to ask them to look at old pictures.....Remember the older relatives love to talk about pictures....hint.......

Start with the grandchildren, it makes them Smile :)

Then, go backwards <wink>.

Also available to you are Census records, Land Records, City/Town Tax Records, Land Deeds and Church Records, Military Records....There are many!

Vitals are open to the public and may be purchased by Town/State offices. Adoption Records are not open to the Public. and you may NOT divulge any information if records are less than 75 yr. old and persons are still alive.

Records are available through LDS FHC. LDS is Latter Day Saints FHC is Family History Center. They have many locations throughout the world. They have Records for research in the US for each state.

If you can not find one in the phone book Under Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, call them at 1-800-346-6044. They will help you find one closest to your area.

At LDS they will show you how to start researching the films available to you. (They have many) Although you can’t copy from their Films to a disk, but may make photocopies of the material a small cost. You may copy to a disk from some of their Family Search CDs they have available to view from their computers.

You can order their films at a minimal price to view there at their facilities. :) They have books, pamphlets and catalogs of their films available. They are happy to help. .

Now, for research online.....

Speaking of Posting Names, it is a good idea to visit the Forum Main Screen and Check out Beginners Start Here, and also View/Post to the Many, many Message Boards we have here in our forum. You can post by state or country..

Also, Check out Dear MYRTLES’ Daily Column. She has some Great Tips.

While you are there, make sure to check out the Chat Schedule for Chats pertaining to your various needs. There are many. There are also Great Hosts in this forum to help you if you are stuck or have a problem with research. As we do not have all the answers we surely can try our best to help you go towards a different angle or area to research. A kind of step back, take a breathe and re-group kind of thing :).

There are many, many places you can research depending on your needs. But... you do need to know there are some vital records for the US online. There are however, sites to obtain the addresses needed to aquire them. You may also do a state ( for the state you need ) at USGENWEB. Some of these places will have census indexes. They also have places to Post your Surnames or Search Surnames.

As you go to these chats, you will see that we have some great places to go. Some are our secret findings as others are well known to all. We are always coming up with new places/areas to search.

We also hope you meet new people (who knows maybe a new cuzzie or two) and enjoy researching online and in our forum :).

There are also many places to research on the web for the States or for other Countries. Please go there and explore. You will be amazed at what you Can find. Just go to the Web, Type in Genealogy and watch what happens :) There are also several other search engines to try. To name a few...

So, To conclude our talk, I hope you enjoy this forum, our chats and our hosts. I know I enjoy helping all of you :) To help you along here are some additional good places to Search.

Beginner's Center

And Good Luck with your research.
