AOL Tips

URL DEFINITION
from MEG's Daily AOL Tips

The Easy Way to the Web

You know, I was watching the movie of the week the other night, and a commercial came on. No surprise there. Just hang in there. I'm getting to the point. So I got up to go get a soda, and one of my friends yells from the living room, "Hey look! This company has a URL on their ad!"

Duh. You'd have to be blind not to have noticed that by now. Of course, I didn't say that to my friend... that's why we're called "friends" and not "enemies." But you've probably noticed it too... something at the bottom of the screen that says http... something something something.

That's a URL or Uniform Resource Locator. In non-geek-speak it's a Web site.

Now, suppose you want to go there. You could click the Globe icon and type the URL at the top of AOL's Web browser, but there's an even better way to go.

Just click the
INTERNET button on the AOL Welcome screen. This takes you to an area called Net Highlights. In the top left corner of this area you'll see a box that has "http://" already written in. Just type the rest of the Web address for the site you want to visit in this box. Then click the GO TO WEB ADDRESS button.

But wait! There's more! There's an even better way to do it. I just showed you that last way cause it's a little secret most folks don't know. How'd you like to get there even easier? Well, come over here. Closer... no. Closer still. There.

You can keyword right to a Web site.

That's right. Open up a keyword box, like always, and type in http://yaddayadda.yadda.com or whatever. Hit GO and you'll be on your way.

When you're out there, just remember to hang onto the surfboard. We don't want to have to send the lifeguard in after you.

Meg signing off...
