Austrian Empire Records

PEREMYSHL EPARCHY

In 1772 the Austrian Empire required that the clergy keep registers for births, marriages and deaths for their parish. These records would then be duplicated for civil registries. It took some time for all areas of the Empire to be in compliance with this new law. In the Peremyshl area this did not start until 1784.

The Greek Catholic archived records for the Galician portion of Peremyshl (Poland and Ukraine) are found in the Przemysl State Archive (Archiwum Panstwowe w Przemyslu). The Civil Registry Offices hold more recent records.

A very small portion of parish books from 106 parishes in Przemysl have been microfilmed by the LDS. Check you local LDS FHC library for the archival inventory. A larger collection of records, called the Bishops Transcript Collection, have not been filmed by the LDS. You will need to have a private researcher, or write for them. (there is a hourly research fee, and document fee which you will be informed of)

PFALZ VS. RHINEPLATINATE
submitted by rwagner@email.sjsu.edu (Roland M. Wagner)

There has been recent discussion concerning different sources of an individual's birthplace being listed as PFALZ and RHINEPALATINATE. Are these interchangeable or is there a difference?

Yes and no -- it all depends on how precise the person is being, and on the historical period. Generally speaking, most people translate "Pfalz" as "Rhine Palatinate" in English. The modern state of Rheinpfalz is on the west bank of the Rhine, bordered on the south by Alsace. A high percentage of the ancestors of Ger-Rus (esp. those of Catholic background) came from villages in the Pfalz, esp. from the lowland plains adjoining the river (near towns and villages such as Landau, Germersheim, etc). I noticed when I visited that area that the terrain is quite flat and a lot of grain is raised. The farmers from those villages undoubtedly had some technological preadaptation for similar farming conditions in the Ukraine.

Historically these portions of the west bank of the Rhine were owned by several royal families and bishops. The major family came to acquire the prestige of being a Royal Elector of the Emperor (a "Kurfuerst" in German), and their land-holdings were collectively referred to in Latin as the "Palatinus" (a term which dates back to Roman times). The actual lands owned by the Elector of the Palatinate varied in history -- in the late 18th century the Kurfuerst of the Palatine owned not only much of the modern Pfalz, but also the lower Neckar valley, and he had a royal residence at Heidelberg.

Jewish Documentary Resources
in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus

submitted by NFatouros@aol.com

Jewish Documentary Resources in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus is published by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Dorit Sallis and Marek Web are the editors. The book does not list surnames unless they belong to relatively famous Jews whose documents have been kept in one institution or another and sometimes by two or more. Besides my grandfather's first cousin Gregor Zvi Belkowsky, there are archives for Isaac Babel and quite a few other writers, and also people who were important historians, artists, rabbis, academicians, lawyers, politicians, and so forth.

Most of the archives were compiled in this century, but there are several dating much earlier. There are archives regarding governmental organizations regarding Jewis and the "Jewish Question" and archives about revolutionaries, rabbis, schools, synagogues, Zionist and revolutionary parties, Bundists, academies of science, charitable societies for relieving people who suffered in pogroms, organizations for promoting agriculture among Jews and for developing "Toiling Jews, " and many others.

In general, the archives are listed by location, (Moscow, St. Petersburg and various provinces in the Ukraine and Russia, and a note is made about how large each archive is, along with the number assigned to the archive.

This compilation is an ongoing project begun about seven years go, and much more work is being done and will be done. I read only the day before yesterday that Yeltsin has unsealed still more files!

The big problem for any genealogist, regarding such a compilation, of course, is how to find out just what might be in the various records which might help us in identifying our respective ancestors and relatives. The same is true of Miriam Weiner's very expensive and elaborately produced new book on the roots of Polish Jews.

The book cost $15.00 and there is a $4.00 postage and handling charge (which seemed to me rather a lot to pay for a smallish book, and Schwartz was so slow in sending it out).

If you want the book write to:

and send a check for $19.00.
