Quaker Loyalists
From: mmccombs@interlog.com (Murray McCombs)

Hello All,

I thought this discussion group may find the following helpful.

Many Loyalists were Quakers that bore arms, helped British prisoners escape, or settled Upper Canada with Govenor General Haldimands' offer of free land grants. Some served in the War of 1812.

Thought I'd index the Quaker surnames found in articles located at the Canadian Friends Historical Association. Most Quakers came from Bucks Co. PA, Chester Co. PA, and Sussex Co. NJ. Check this web site:

Bye for now

Query on MARTIN, a Loyalist in N.S.
From: MFinn90885@aol.com

My ancestor Samuel MARTIN served in the Prince of Wales American Regiment in the American Revolution. The unit was disbanded in Nova Scotia. I am hoping that someone in N.S. has a list of those who served in this regiment.

Fishin' It WAS a Way of Life: http://www.lostatsea.ca/
Contains names of N.S. fishermen lost at sea.

Getting the Most from the Internet

The resources available on the internet are growing so quickly that it is hard to keep up with them. In order to get the most value from your use of the net, it is worthwhile to learn how to use a search engine to locate sites of interest.

When you use a search engine, it is usually necessary to type in a word or words that describe the topic that is of interest to you and to click on a Go or Search button to begin the search. The search engine then performs a search for internet sites that contain the specified words in the title, the address (URL) or the body and returns a list of links to all of the sites it has located. You can peruse the sites by clicking on the links to each page and using the Back feature of your browser to return to the original list.

Most search engines will allow you to customize your search in various ways. For instance, it may be possible to request only sites that are written in English or only sites that have been updated within a certain period of time...or both.

Likewise, most search engines allow the use of Boolean logic (and, or, not and sometimes near) when constructing search queries. For example, a search query for Mary AND Lamb will produce a list of sites that contain both the word Mary and the word Lamb. A search query for Mary AND NOT Lamb will return only sites that contain the word Mary, but not the word Lamb.

As an example of the power of performing an internet search, I used the AltaVista Search Engine to perform a search on the query United NEAR Empire NEAR Loyalists. (Use of the word NEAR on the AltaVista site means that the specified words must appear within 10 words of one another.) Within a matter of seconds, the AltaVista Search Engine returned links to 810 internet sites that contain these three words.

A search on the query Michael NEAR Showers (the name of one of my Loyalist ancestors) returned 170 sites. Not all of the sites returned were of interest, but the eighth site in the list read as follows, which you will probably recognize as being a site about Butler's Rangers, the regiment in which my ancestor served.

8. Officers and Non-commissioned Officers
Officers and Non-commissioned Officers 1777 - 1784. Rank. Name. Date. Lieutenant Colonel. John Butler. 14 February 1780. Major. Potts, William. Seconded...
http://iaw.on.ca/~awoolley/brang/broffr.html

The searches you can perform are limited only by your imagination in combining words. Each site works a little differently, so you will need to read the Help section on a site before you use it.

Following are the addresses of some of the most popular search engine sites. Try a search on one of your surnames or the name of the regiment in which one of your ancestors served. It's fun and you'll be amazed by what you find!
