From The Top

With the last year of the Millineum upon us, we start thinking about the census records that will be released in the near future to help us with our research. To protect the privacy of the living, access to the population schedules of the census is restricted for seventy-two years after the census is taken. That means that in just two more years, we will have access to the 1930 census. I can hardly wait. Of course there is going to be a problem for us doing Northern research as it appears that only the following states are Soundexed for 1930: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Parts of Kentucky and West Virignia are also Soundexed. In the mean time, we have a wealth of great information available to us in the census records which go back to colonial times and can give us valuable information on the people we are researching. We can find information on the name, age, sex, color, occupation, birthplace of each individual living in the house along with vital information about each. This is one of the great research tools we have available to us as Genealogists.
For more information on the Census and how to use it I suggest you visit the Resource Center (AOL Only) in the Genealogy Forum (AOL Only) and check out the articles on the Census (AOL Only).
