JOHN O'NEILL TRIBUTE

In a message dated 98-11-29 00:33:32 EST, GFA Beth writes:

One of my best friends is gone. I cannot begin to express the sorrow in my heart for Joyce, and the sense of loss that I feel.

I have many fond memories of John. We first met Joyce and John in Nashville. We hit it off so well that we kept in touch weekly, either by phone or email.

John had a wonderful voice. One night in Nashville, we all sang Irish songs. John always brought joy to whomever he was with. His sense of humor always had you smiling.

Joyce and John had a wish to return to the Northeast. We all tried to make it happen, and just wished for the time that they could be closer than over 1000 miles away. But, before that happened, we spoke by telephone.

In addition to being an excellent genealogy researcher, John was an accomplished nuclear power engineer, and an ex naval officer.

Often, when I was unable to attend my chat, they were always willing to fill in. There were many, many things that they did while staff members in the genealogy forum. Joyce and John organized the training for the staff members before the classes were moved to the CLC.

J & J were responsible for the Irish/Scot Newsletter. They worked very hard to produce a quality newsletter for the forum, and continued to do so, even when they were no longer staff members.

It was always J & J, online or in person. It was never J or J, they were always together. They loved each other so much, that they were always together, either online or in person.

I wish I could put my arms around Joyce, and make all of her pain go away. I wish I could bring John back. I can't do either. I feel so inadequate. I will miss John dearly, and I will grieve for Joyce in her loss.

John was a fine man and will be greatly missed by many of us. He brought joy and laughter to our lives. I will miss you, John.

You've made my heart soar!
Sorrow yes, but even more so are the lasting memories, which you have so tenderly written. The times of sharing the deep thoughts to the laughter. It all goes together to give us the memories of a good friend. Give Joyce a big hug from us all. Our love and prayers go as well....

Oh, and give a smile along with the tear, when you think of John.
