Citing Sources

Primary citation for a local level birth registration:

Herbert Shaw, birth certificate 2236, (1913), Clerk's Office, City Hall, Belleville, Illinois.

Elements of this citation:

1)
Subject's name. The name of the person for whom this birth registration was issued.
2)
Record type and number. Birth registrations often carry a variety of numbers, but almost all will have a distinct registration number.
3)
Registration year. The year in which this birth was registered or filed, which is usually, but not always, the same as the year of birth.
4)
Repository name and address. The place where the original copy of this birth registration is housed. In the case of a local record in the US, this is often the County Clerk's office.
NOTE: Additional information that you may wish to record (although not necessarily in the citation itself) might include the date the registration was signed, the hospital if any, and the attending physician or midwife.

LCN Lending Library

Last issue, I proposed a contest with the prize being my duplicate copy of Paul Bunnell's book
Research Guide to Loyalist Ancestors, a directory to archives, manuscripts and published sources dealing with the Loyalists. After giving this some thought, I think I know of a better idea that would allow anyone with an interest in this book to have access to it....don't know why this didn't occur to me before. Actually, it did occur to me before with regard to the books below, just not with regard to my own book! Duh! :)

So.....we are going to start a lending library for readers of the Loyalist Chat News. In addition to my duplicate copy of Bunnell's book, we also have two books that have been very graciously donated by one of our faithful readers and chat attendees, Dick Strang (DickStrang). Those books are:

Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne, Misadventures of an English General in the Revolution by F. J. Hudleston, librarian of the British War Office (Garden City, NJ: Garden City Publishing Co., Inc., 1927).

The Baroness and the General by Louise Hall Tharp (Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1962). This book is the story of the life of Baroness Frederika von Riedesel, wife of the German general who commanded Britain's mercenary troops in the American Revolution.

Here is how it will work:

1) If you would like to borrow one of these books, send me GFS NanC@aol.com
) an email with your mailing address and specify the book you wish to borrow. Please limit your request to one book at a time.

2) I will mail the book to you and send you an email stating my return mailing address, when the book is due back and the costs that I expect to be reimbursed for packaging and mailing. This is not being set up as a profit making venture, so the costs should be very reasonable - no more than a couple of dollars. We will allow each borrower to keep a book for five weeks from the date of mailing before asking for it back. This allows roughly a week for it to arrive and four weeks to read it. If we find that this is consistently too long or too short of a time frame, we will make adjustments as we go along.

3) You will be responsible for return packaging and mailing of the books that you borrow.

4) If the book that you request to borrow is already out on loan, your name will be placed on a waiting list and you will be notified of when you can expect to receive it.

I'd like to thank Dick for his generous donation to start our library!!

@--->--->-- @--->--->--

If anyone else has books dealing with the Loyalists or the American Revolution that they would like to donate to the lending library, we would love to hear from you! :)

Canada Birth, Death & Marriage Registry

The following notice was posted by Lorine McGinnis Schultz on several of the Canadian mailing lists within the last two weeks.

Announcing the new home of the
Canada Births Deaths & Marriages Exchange....

The purpose of the Canadian Births or Baptism, Deaths and Marriages Exchange is to provide genealogists a free resource for sharing information about details contained on certificates registered in Canada.

This is a way for genealogists to share their information and find others who are researching the same families. It is not a query page, but it is a Registry where you can submit your information found on birth/marriage/death certificates in Canada. You can also view submissions made by others and arrange to obtain copies of the certificates submitted.

New Book from Heritage

Until November 30th, Heritage Books is offering a special prepublication price of $60 on a reprint of Lorenzo Sabine's
Biographical Sketches of Loyalists of the American Revolution, with an Historical Essay (1864). Although it is a bit pricey, this book is a good source of information on Loyalist ancestors. According to J. N. Larned, editor of Literature of American History, "It was a path-breaker in a new class of historical writing, and has contributed in an important way to produce a more just and humane estimate of the men who went down in ’76." Perhaps you can persuade your local library to purchase a copy.

The first 150 pages of this work constitute the historical essay. This essay examines in detail the causes for disaffection on the part on the colonists, the state of political parties in the colonies and the reasons which caused colonists to choose between patriotism or loyalism. The biographical sketches are alphabetically arranged and contain a wealth of material, which may include place of birth, occupation, military service and names of spouses and children.

AOL Goes to Oz

The following announcement appeared in the JONATHAN-NEWS, an e-mail ListServ used to send out a fortnightly letter to members from Jonathan Bulkeley, the Managing Director of AOL in the United Kingdom.

"The Aussie AOL launched with a great fanfare last week down under. If you have friends and family in Oz, let them know to watch their postbox for an AOL CD. I'm told that AOL disks have been sighted from Brisbane to Cairns."

Ancaster's Heritage, Volume 2

The Ancaster (Ontario) Township Historical Society has just published a new book called
Ancaster's Heritage, Volume 2. It contains information, with sources, about the lots and farms that were not included in the original publication and corrects some of the serious errors found in the first volume. The information in Volume 2 sometimes includes considerable family information, excerpts from letters and diaries pertaining to various families and lots. In other cases, it simply lists the owners of a lot from the Crown Patentee to about 1900.

For information on prices or how to order, email the author, Paul Grimwood, at paul.grimwood@sympatico.ca.
