FORUM BUSINESS & CALENDAR
From the Top
submitted by GFLGeorge@AOL.com
The Genealogy Forum has taken several momentous steps forward with the opening of our new online store, our new Sunday Night Speaker Program, which this month will feature Brian Mavrogeorge of Palladium Software, and the release of the new book about the forum by our world-renowned columnist, George Morgan.
With the new Genealogy Forum Store linked on our front screen, we can now provide for more of our members' needs by making numerous genealogy-related items available at reasonable prices. We will be bringing you a one-stop service that will allow you to buy books, software, data, subscriptions and memberships to genealogical organizations. Besides bringing you great prices on these items, we plan to donate a part of the profits to worthwhile genealogical fund drives.
On December 6, 1998, at 9 P.M. EST, Brian Mavrogeorge of Palladium Software will be speaking to you in our new expanded conference room facility. Brian is one of the biggest names in online genealogy. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Brian ran one of the best genealogy Bulletin Boards Systems (BBS) in the country out of San Francisco. The "Roots" bulletin board set a standard that we all tried to measure up to in those days. I hope you will all stop by and take this opportunity to talk with him at this time.
One of the first items that will be made available in our new store is The Genealogy Forum on America Online: The Official User's Guide by George G. Morgan. Few people know the Genealogy Forum as well as George Morgan. He was responsible for much of the growth in the forum over the last few years. He organized and programmed much of what you see today in the Resource Center of the Forum as well as many other areas of the forum. He is the author of the weekly column Along these Lines ..., which appears in our forum every Friday, and is one of the people responsible for the "feature button" on the front screen that takes you to many interesting places within the forum. While helping to build the forum, George Morgan learned of many of the little nooks and crannies where valuable information is stored. In this well written Guide, he walks you through and teaches you how to get the most out of the Genealogy Forum's extensive content. This is a must have for everyone doing genealogical research, to be placed beside your copy of The Source, The Red Book and The Handy Book for Genealogists.
With the holiday season around the corner, we hope you will stop by to the chat with Brian, do some of your holiday shopping at our new store and of course read George's new book.
Pat on the Back
submitted by GFLGeorge@AOL.com
This month we had a long list of people that were deserving of the Pat on the Back Award. As we grow more and more of our members and staff step forward to make your forum a better place. It is with great pride that I present the coveted award to the following people:
GFS Morgan - George Morgan has been one of the hardest workers to help create a world class forum. With his new book The Genealogy Forum on America Online: The Official User's Guide, George uses his in-depth knowledge of the forum and his wonderful writing style to help even the most knowledgeable users to be able to use the forum better. His weekly column Along These Lines... has become renowned throughout the industry as one of the best genealogy columns available to the intermediate and advanced researcher. George has helped to develop the forum into a world class online research site.
GFS Heather - Heather Bowers was recently named as Beginners Team Leader and invited to join the Genealogy Forum Senior Staff. As one of her first acts as the leader, she initiated a very successful open house that introduced many people to the genealogy forum. Last year Heather was one of the originators of the "be your own ancestor day". It is this kind of innovation that makes coming to the Genealogy Forum on a regular basis fun :)
The Genealogy Forum Store Team
GFT Kim - When there is a lot of work to be done in the forum, you know you are going to see Kim Myette there with her sleeves rolled up. Kim worked hard to help develop the screens, "stock the shelves", create the pictures, set up the interfaces and test the systems to make this feature another successful addition to our growing forum.
GFSStore and GFS Jeff - Brenda and Jeff Maloney are the new storekeepers of the forum and have helped to set up the accounting and distribution systems within the store. They are responsible for the day to day running of the store.
GFS NanC - Nancy Cole proofread all the store items to make sure we put our best foot forward.
GFS PatR - Pat Richley, better known as DearMYRTLE, helped with a step-by-step directions and wording on how-to articles, form and button design, and the testing.
GFS Terry - Terry Morgan, our message board administrator, jumped in to help with the testing of the systems.
Bob Sullivan has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to create the deals that will bring the products to our members. He is the finance guy in the forum and has been talking to the venders to bring in the goods that you will find on our shelves.
