INTERNET FOR GENEALOGISTS

NEW ROOTS WEB ARCHIVE SEARCH ENGINE

The URL below is for a search engine in beta testing that searches USGenWeb Archives. Put in your surname of choice and be surprised at all the hits you get returned! I guess it would search any word -- not just surnames.

It's in beta testing right now......I tried it a little earlier and got a lot of hits for Dent.
Thought you might want to give it a try.

UNUSUAL AND CREATIVE GENEALOGY SITES
Forwarded by GFS Acadian@aol.com
From rosewebb@datasync.com (Rose C. Webb)

I haven't had time to search all this page, but it has a lot of links on it. Wow! Would keep anyone busy and out of trouble for a long time! One link I found was wrong, but I was given this in IM. Not sure what the home page is.

http://www.vanished.com/pages/unusual.html

MYRT'S NOTE: I checked out this web site on Acadian's suggestion, and found all the links work correctly at this time. Carol told me she spent over an hour going through the links, and found them most helpful.

Today's url is a brand new website.
The Emigrant Ship Lists Transcribers Guild
http://iigs.rootsweb.com/immships/index1.html

This ambitious project has 200 volunteers transcribing ships lists from NARA to put online for free. There are presently 75 lists transcribed and many more links with transcribed lists already online at various genealogy websites which are being collected and organized on this site. This is a noteworthy list as it brings The Genealogy Community together to promote free and easy access to sources for genealogists.

The Genealogy Help Network http://ghn.genealogy.org
has 'donated' a link to our transcribed passenger list The" ERIN 1813, with several more not online as yet. Please pass this along to another mailing list so that others might learn of this great undertaking!

The Moravian Church is the oldest Protestant denomination, begun in Europe in 1457. Today, the church is world-wide, with provinces centered in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. This site attempts to link Moravian records, genealogies, archives,
historical societies, museums and references.

The newest addition is a list of over 400 Moravian surnames from Bohemia, Moravian, Poland, Germany and England (to name a few). I would love to help you make your Moravian connection!

A new site for joining and leaving the lists is www.genweb.net/major.shtml
Check http://genweb.net/maillistinstruc.shtml for more help.

You are currently subscribed in "mail mode" or "digest mode", which means that for each posting made to listname@genweb.net you will be sent one message for each or all of one days messages in digest mode in one message for the list you have joined.

1. Send your postings to the listname@genweb.net
as in ontario@genweb.net

2. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to
majordomo@genweb.net
that contains (in the body of the message)as in the command
unsubscribe ontario
and no additional text.

3. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance,
if your subscription is canceled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe list name" as in "subscribe ontario" to majordomo@genweb.net

4. How to change to digest mode (which means that several postings made to the list will be consolidated together and sent to you as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command
"subscribe list name-digest" as in "subscribe ontario-digest" to "majordomo@genweb.net" to start receiving digest mode
messages.

5. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again.

6. To see what other lists are available check my web site
http://genweb.net/Listinfo/listlinkpage.htm

Follow the links to the pages

7. There is a public ftp site for you to post files. Please don't attach them to your email just upload them to the ftp site and announce the site on the list. You can copy this address to Netscape, MS Explorer or a ftp program and move the
files to the site.
