From The Top

Hello Everybody!

I can't believe that Summer is already half over! Our theme this month is Combining Research and Vacations... this is one of my favorite things to do. It could mean attending a genealogy conference or a family reunion, or just something simple like visiting a cemetery along the way.
In keeping with the combination vacation / research theme, this month our Forum spotlight is on our Family Reunion Center. We offer public listings of family reunions, tips for planning a reunion, a planning checklist, lots of helpful website links and success stories from those that have experiences to share.

Our File Library Spotlight is on Clarkside Cemetery; Pembroke, Washington Co., ME , one of the many cemetery transcriptions available in our new file library. Maybe you'll find your ancestor's name on one of these transcriptions and decide to plan a trip to visit the cemetery... Ever been to Pembroke, Maine?

And still following the theme, don't forget to check out our Conference and Events listings for more great things to do. You won't find it listed there yet, but I just found out that NEHGS has been chosen as the host organization for FGS 2006, which will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston from August 30 through September 2, 2006. I've already marked it on my calendar and hope to see some of you there!

Updates and renovations continue in every corner of our site and this edition of the GFNews highlights quite a few historical articles, but we have some of the best free genealogical resources available online.

I made a promise to finish renovations on the GEDCOM library and Surname Center by the end of the Summer and the GEDCOM Libraries are nearing completion now. The Genealogy Forum actually has 18 GEDCOM Libraries and 3 Tiny Tafel Libraries. The Tiny Tafel libraries are complete and those libraries are accessible from The Tiny Tafel Library Index. I am proud to say that we are close to completing the GEDCOM libraries, even though we are just halfway through the Summer season. These libraries really need to be completed before we can finish updates on Surname Center so we moved up our timetable a bit to get them done sooner. The following table contains links to the completed libraries, and you can follow our progress on the remaining libraries at any time by going to our What's New? page.

We continue to work on updates throughout the forum, but our main efforts are being concentrated in these areas:

  • Updates to the United States Resources area.
  • Work on building a file library for our website - United States Genealogical Databases
  • A complete revamp of our Surname Center is in progress. This area has never been completed but the layout was not easily navigated and pages were missing. We plan on completing these throughout the summer, with most of the work done AFTER the GEDCOM Libraries are complete.
  • Replacing the historical GFNews editions. This month we posted August, 1997, August, 1998 and April, 1999 on the website. These editions were previously available on our old server, but never moved to the Rootsweb server. We are aware that some editions prior to November, 1999 are still offline from our server change and are working to get these back online.

We are anxious to finish completing these updates so that we can concentrate on bringing you more new content and resources.

We look forward to growing with you, and WE are up to the challenge! We still need YOU to make this website a success. Please check the CALL FOR PAPERS and perhaps you could submit an article for next month's GFNews.
