1603 Martin Pring explores Piscataqua River.
1622 Council for New England grants Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Capt. John Mason land between the Merrimack and Kennebec rivers.
1623 The first permanent English settlements in New Hampshire were established by traders and religious dissenters at Dover and Portsmouth.
1629 Mason granted area between Merrimack and Piscataqua rivers; he names it New Hampshire.
1635 Death of Capt. Mason leaves land claims in doubt.
1638 The towns of Exeter and Hampton were founded.
1641 - 1679 The New Hampshire settlements were under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts.
1675 - 1678 King Philip's War leads to raids by Saco Indians.
1679 New Hampshire became a separate royal province but had the same governor as Massachusetts for most of the period before 1741.
1689 - 1697 King William's War brings more Indian raids.
1739 - 1741 Boundary disputes with Massachusetts were settled.
1759 American victories over the Indians opened western New Hampshire to settlement.
1764 The western boundary was declared to be the west bank of the Connecticut River. Earlier, most of Vermont had been claimed by New Hampshire.
1769 Dartmouth College chartered at Hanover.
1775 - 1783 Some Revolutionary War battles were fought in New Hampshire.
1777 Vermont separates from New Hampshire to create an independent republic. Gen. John Stark leads New Hampshire and Vermont troops to victory over British at the Battle of Bennington (Vt.)
1782 Vermont - New Hampshire border disputes settled.
1788 New Hampshire ratified the United States Constitution to become the ninth state on June 21.
1819 The Religious Toleration Act was passed. New Hampshire residents could no longer be taxed to support the Congregational or any other church.
1842 The boundary between New Hampshire and the province of Quebec was settled. At about this time, farm workers and overseas immigrants began moving to New Hampshire cities to work in the textile and shoe factories.
1861 - 1865 About 39,000 New Hampshire men served in the Union Army.
