Charlestown, NH Town History


Charlestown was formed in 1735, when the General Court of Massachusetts gave charters to "plantations" in the upper Connecticut River Valley. Charlestown's county is Sullivan, which was formed in 1827. It's parent county was Cheshire (1771) the original county. Charlestown was first known as "The Fort at # 4".

Charlestown played an important part in the French and Indian War and also served as a gathering point for troops during the revolution.
