GFS Karen: I tried to get as much of his family history that has been GFS Karen: written about him in here as I could . GFS Karen: Here we go . GFS Karen: I am going to try and give you as much information tonight GFS Karen: as I can on BLUEJACKET . I am happy that you could GFS Karen: make it tonight . This is going to be the first of a month GFS Karen: long lectures on Our Great Men . GFS Karen: BLUEJACKET, the Shawnee name appeared more than GFS Karen: once in the Shawnee Nation. MARMADUKE VAN GFS Karen: SWEARINGEN, most think, was not the orginal GFS Karen: BLUEJACKET. GFS Karen: The name started out as two words and evolved into a GFS Karen: surname after MARMADUKE was captured by the GFS Karen: SHAWNEE NATION . Historians have noted that GFS Karen: Bluejacket was a white captive and received wide GFS Karen: acceptance since the publication of ALLEN W. ECKERT'S GFS Karen: book "THE FRONTIERSMAN" . Bluejacket's life is GFS Karen: based on family stories and traditions from Kansas in 1877. GFS Karen: Bluejacket was the recognized chief of the Mequachake GFS Karen: division of the Shawnee in 1772 , while Marmaduke was GFS Karen: but a youth at the time of his capture in 1778. GFS Karen: A Shawnee named Blue Jacket is listed among John GFS Karen: Owens early accounts of our history . As early as 1756 GFS Karen: Bluejacket's name appearing along with Ben Dickerson, GFS Karen: and cousin Blue Shadow, who was also called the Earl GFS Karen: Of Hell. Along with the Rev. David Jones who visited Blue GFS Karen: Jackets town in 1772 . GFS Karen: When Marmaduke VanSwearingen was captured during GFS Karen: the 1770's, he was adopted and given the name of Blue GFS Karen: Jacket . Perhaps he was to replace the original Blue GFS Karen: Jacket . But Blue Jacket's family may have given him the GFS Karen: same name, which was done at that time. GFS Karen: Blue Jacket was the second in command with Little Turttle GFS Karen: (when reading about Little Turttle I find mention of GFS Karen: Bluejacket also), during the red victories at Harmar 's GFS Karen: Defeat and St. Clairs defeat . You can find writtings of GFS Karen: them both in many of the books written about the fall of GFS Karen: Fallen Timbers, KY. GFS Karen: Blue Jackets first wife was Clearwater, daughter of GFS Karen: Deperon Baby and his Shawnee wife. His children GFS Karen: included JAMES BLUEJACKET b. around 1790. GFS Karen: BlueJacket had a second wife . Her name was PEGGY GFS Karen: MOORE, a white daughter of James Moore who was GFS Karen: adopted by the Shawnee. Their children were JOSEPH, GFS Karen: who became the sub-chief under Tecumseh in the war of GFS Karen: 1812, Mary Jane Bluejacket, who married a GFS Karen: French-Canadian Trader named Lacelle and later lived in GFS Karen: Detroit, James Bluejacket who was the father of Rev. GFS Karen: Charles BlueJacket, and Nancy Bluejacket who married GFS Karen: James Stewart and had four children whom among them GFS Karen: was Joseph Stewart. Listed in the tracts of land in Ohio GFS Karen: by the 1817 Treaty of the Miami of Lake Erie was GFS Karen: Thucuscu or Jim Bluejacket. I am not sure if this is one of GFS Karen: Van's children. GFS Karen: The Shawnee who were on the muster roll of the Ohio GFS Karen: Hog Creek and Wapakonetta bands shows Henry GFS Karen: BlueJacket family of seven and James Bluejacket family of GFS Karen: four. The Shawnees who fought the Seminoles in Florida GFS Karen: were Henry, George and Jim Bluejacket. GFS Karen: Charles Bluejacket was the son of James Bluejacket born GFS Karen: on the Huron River in Michigan 1816. He attended a GFS Karen: mission school near Fort Meigs . GFS Karen: James Bluejacket married a Wyandot and lived with her GFS Karen: people. The 1843 Roll of the Wyandots from Sandusky GFS Karen: shows his family consisting of 3 children. Rev. Charles GFS Karen: Bluejacket married Pa-we-see in 1833 , among their GFS Karen: children was Robert born in 1840, he was shot to death GFS Karen: by Villiam Fish in 1858 in Johnson County, Kansas. GFS Karen: Charles married again in 1843 to Julie Ann Daugherty GFS Karen: member of the Louis P. Daugherty family . From this GFS Karen: marriage came Sally b. 1844 m. Jonathan Gore, David, b. GFS Karen: 1846, Price b. 1854, Willis b. 1860, Julia Ann b. 1863 and GFS Karen: Richard b. 1866 . GFS Karen: There is much written on the family of Charles Bluejacket GFS Karen: which can be retrived from RICHARD PANGBURN'S book GFS Karen: INDIAN BY BLOOD VOL1. GFS Karen: Among the Shawnee who settled on the lands of the GFS Karen: Cherokee Nation by 1869 was Charles, Louisa, Price, GFS Karen: Willis, Silas, Henry, Richard M., David, Eliza , Rosella, GFS Karen: Katherine, Sally Martin, Joseph, Emma, GFS Karen: Sally, (F. E. Bailey's divorced widow) . All family members GFS Karen: are listed in JAIFR, vol lV, #2, pp 100-111. Twenty -four GFS Karen: members of the Bluejacket family are listed among the GFS Karen: Shawnee on the 1880 Cherokee Nation Census. GFS Karen: And last but not forgoten is Dennis W. Bluejacket, he was GFS Karen: among the Shawnee who fought for America during WWII . GFS Karen: He was killed in Europe. GFS Karen: I hope this lightens your search for BlueJackets family . GFS Karen: The following books may help .
