Important Dates in Maine History

  • 1607 - 1632 Early English settlements
  • 1632 - 1759 Troubles with French and Indians
  • 1677 Massachusetts purchased rights to Maine
  • 1716 - 1760 The entire state was called York, a county of Massachusetts.
  • 1760 Province of Maine / District of Maine
  • 1816 - 1819 Emigration
  • 1819 - 1820 Maine was separated from Massachusetts and became a state.
  • 1838 - 1839 Aroostook War.
  • 1842 The Webster-Ashburton Treaty defined the boundaries between Maine and British territories, and settled the final suppression of the African slave trade.
  • 1861 - 1865 About 72,000 men from Maine served in the Union Armed Forces during the Civil War.
