Jewish Documentary Resources
in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus
Jewish Documentary Resources in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus is published by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Dorit Sallis and Marek Web are the editors. The book does not list surnames unless they belong to relatively famous Jews whose documents have been kept in one institution or another and sometimes by two or more. Besides my grandfather's first cousin Gregor Zvi Belkowsky, there are archives for Isaac Babel and quite a few other writers, and also people who were important historians, artists, rabbis, academicians, lawyers, politicians, and so forth.
Most of the archives were compiled in this century, but there are several dating much earlier. There are archives regarding governmental organizations regarding Jews and the "Jewish Question" and archives about revolutionaries, rabbis, schools, synagogues, Zionist and revolutionary parties, Bundists, academies of science, charitable societies for relieving people who suffered in pogroms, organizations for promoting agriculture among Jews and for developing "Toiling Jews, " and many others.
In general, the archives are listed by location: Moscow, St. Petersburg and various provinces in the Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia. A note is made about how large each individual archive is, along with the number assigned to the archive.
This compilation is an ongoing project begun about seven years go, and much more work is being done and will be done. I read only the day before yesterday that Yeltsin has unsealed still more files!
The big problem for any genealogist, regarding such a compilation, of course, is how to find out just what might be in the various records which might help us in identifying our respective ancestors and relatives. The same is true of Miriam Weiner's very expensive and elaborately produced new book on the roots of Polish Jews.
