
A Visit to a Family History Center

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has Family History Centers located World Wide. For the Center nearest you, consult your local phone book or contact local church leaders.
There are various collections available and they should be searched faithfully for each surname you are researching. The following is a brief glimpse into each section.
The International Genealogical Index (IGI) - Give a list of names, dates and places of birth, christenings and marriages as well as LDS temple ordinances. To use this collection you must know the persons place of birth. This collection is available on computer and microfiche, It is updated every 4 years, so please ask your Librarian which is the most up to date.
The Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) - List all materials available at the main LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Most of these materials(microfilm or microfiche) may be ordered on loan through your local Family History Center. For items that are not available or restricted for loan, small portions may be photo copied upon request. Your Family History librarian will be able to help. This catalog is updated yearly.
Family Registry - Indexes more than 286,000 like individuals and family organizations who are interested in sharing information on common ancestors.
Accelerated Index System (AIS) - An alphabetical listing on microfiche in 8 sections of people who were recorded living in the U.S. from 1607-1906. Completed from Federal Census and early Tax and Rent Rolls.
Periodical Source Index (PERSI) - Microfiche index to place, subject and Surname articles published in the 2,000 most popular genealogy and history periodicals from 1847-1985 and annual 1986 + They are housed at the Allen County Public Library Ft. Wayne Indiana.
Family Group Records archives (FGRA) - This collection contains family group sheets on microfilm submitted to the Genealogy Society of Utah from 1942-1969.
Temple Index Bureau (TIB) - A form must be submitted to request a review of this collection from Salt Lake City Family History Library. This is useful if you believe your ancestor was a member of the LDS church.
Ancestral File- Pedigrees linked data on computer.
Military Index - Deaths occurring during the Korean War and Viet Nam Conflict (including Laos and Cambodia)
Social Security Death Index - Search by Surname, Obtain the SS#. You are then able to send for a copy of the original application which provides proof of birth and parentage.
