William Whipper
1805-1885
Name: William Whipper
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Occupation/Training: Leading Black intellectual, abolitionist, businessman and banker
Abolitionist Involvement: The son of a Columbia Pennsylvania White businessman. His mother was a Black domestic slave in the household of his father. William inherited a small lumberyard at the death of his father. Whipper built a successful wholesale business with his partner Stephen Smith. The business expanded to other cities in Pennsylvania. Whipper became active in the anti-slavery movement in 1835. He was the prime mover of the Moral Reform Society. Whipper was the forerunner of Thoreau, Gandhi and Dr.King. He wrote "An Address on Non-Resistance To Offensive Agression". In it, he claimed that non-violence " is not only consistent with reason, but the surest method of obtaining a speedy triumph of the principles of universal peace."
Publications: "An Address on Non-Resistance To Offensive Agression", which was published in the Colored American.
