Madison Washington
Name: Madison Washington
Birthplace: VA ?
Status: Slave
Occupation/Training: Insurrectionist
Residence: VA, Nassau Bahamas
Abolitionist Involvement: The slave ship 'Creole' sailed from Hampton Roads, VA, on its way to New Orleans, carrying 135 slaves as cargo. Led by Madison Washington, a group of nineteen slaves attacked the crew as the ship approached the Bahamas. All weapons and the documents related to their slavery were seized, the captain injured and one seaman killed. The insurrectionists then threatened to put the crew over the side if they did not sail for an English colony. The 'Creole' changed course and landed at Nassau. There were many American protests, which resulted in a dispute with England, to no avail, and the slaves obtained their freedom.
