William Alexander Leidesdorff
1810-1848
Name: William Alexander Leidesdorff
Birthplace: Caribbean

Abolitionist Involvement: William Alexander Leidesdorff traveled frequently between New York and New Orleans, and acted as the master of the ship owned by the family. He managed the schooner the Julia Anna. Occasionally his trips also took him to the Pacific, and he frequented California while there. In 1843, he acquired land in Sand Francisco, and a year later became a citizen of Mexico in order to acquire a 35,000 ranch that was still under Spanish dominated California. Although he was granted Mexican citizenship, he was also given a position as Vice Consul. He also continued to purchase land, and in 1846, was given land on the corner of California and what later became known as Leisdorff Street.
In his lifetime, Leisdorff was one of San Francisco's prominent businessmen. He served on the City council, he was treasurer and member of the School committee, and spoke several languages requiring him on occasion to work as interpreter for official events.
