Abolitionist Involvement: Educated by private tutor, in 1837 David Jenkins moved to Columbus Ohio working as a painter. He amassed a good sum of funds and managed to acquire several pieces of real estate. In 1843, he established The Palladium of Liberty -- an abolitionist newspaper. He voiced his strong opinion for the education of black children in Ohio. His strongest belief was in the state of constant agitation for the abolition of slavery. He was constantly speaking out against the institution, and anti-slavery was a strong area of focus for his paper. In the 1840's and 1850's he was constantly petitioning the general assembly of the State of Ohio for issues pertaining to the betterment of the quality of life for the free Negro population. He was active in the Underground Railroad, and was also active in the Masonic order in Ohio. He formed the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society, and he was a close associate of John Mercer Langston of Oberlin, and Peter H. Clark of Cincinnati. He strongly supported the enlistment of the Colored troops for the side of the Union, and he served as the head of a statewide committee that raised funds for colored troops. After the war ended, he moved to Mississippi, and took a position with the Freedmen's Bureau. He was elected to the Mississippi state legislature in 1875. He died in 1877 after a brief illness.
