Abolitionist Involvement: One of six delegates who petitioned President Andrew Johnson in June 1865 to extend martial law in the state of Kentucky. This delegation traveled to Washington to acquaint the new president with the state of affairs in Kentucky and to present him with their petition. As a result of their efforts, martial law was extended until October 1865.
