  Items that can be borrowed (as long as they are not rare or fragile) include: books, periodicals, reports, newspapers in microform format, official publications (federal, provincial and some foreign), microforms of Canadian masters and doctoral theses, sound recordings, printed material about music including scores, children's literature, alternative format materials (such as audiocassettes, talking books) and library science literature.

  The National Library of Canada has a large collection of published sources relating to Canadian genealogy including family and local histories, transcriptions and indexes of parish registers, cemetery transcription lists and the periodicals of genealogical and historical societies from across Canada, as well as Canadian newspapers and city directories.
