Maryland Fried Green Tomatoes

We used flour or corn meal to coat the tomatoes, then they were fried in bacon grease and seasoned with salt and pepper. But here's an added touch that no one else mentioned. A sprinkling of sugar goes on the top after you have turned the tomatoes. That way the sugar doesn't scorch.
I'm from Allegany County in the western panhandle of MD, but my g. ma and my mother-in law were from Bedford Co PA just north of the state line and they fixed them the same way. Always a little sugar in anything with tomatoes.
