Starr, and Arrest of Neighbors 1 CONT 1 CONT ---A neighborhood dispute over the fencing of a road two and one-half 1 CONC miles west of Bernie, was the direct cause of C.C. Starr being mortally 1 CONC wounded last Sunday night about 7 o’clock. 1 CONT 1 CONT Pone Brock, Lem Parker and Verne Higginbottom, neighbors of Starr, were 1 CONC arrested last Monday after the wounded man had made a statement. All 1 CONC three gave bond for their appearance before Squire Nichols in the sum of 1 CONC $200 each. 1 CONT 1 CONT From information obtained by a representative of the Tribune a 1 CONC neighborhood brawl had been in progress for the past three weeks over the 1 CONC fencing up of a neighborhood as an outlet to the main road leading to 1 CONC Bernie. 1 CONT 1 CONT Some time ago Pone Brock who owns the land adjoining that of Starr, bade 1 CONC an agreement with Starr that they would dig a partnership ditch which was 1 CONC to be dug on Brock’s land and in return Starr was to give the right of 1 CONC way for the road on his land. The ditch was dug as per agreement, but 1 CONC when Starr fenced the land he is said to have forgot his promise and 1 CONC fenced the road up. The fence was torn down twice by unknown parties 1 CONC before the shooting took place. Starr rebuilt the fence the third time, 1 CONC and informed some parties who had demonstrated with him that it would be 1 CONC better for him to give his neighbors the road, that the next man who 1 CONC undertook to tear down the fence would get hurt for he intended to guard 1 CONC it. Sunday evening he left his home with a Winchester rifle and shotgun, 1 CONC and about 7 o’clock the neighbors heard several shots fired in the 1 CONC direction of the fenced up road. Upon investigation it was found that 1 CONC Starr had been shot in the back with what was supposed to be a 38 caliber 1 CONC pistol, the ball passing through his right lung. 1 CONT 1 CONT Deputy Sheriff James A. Walker of Bernie, was called by phone. When he 1 CONC arrived at the scene of the shooting Starr with the aid of his family had 1 CONC succeeded in reaching his home. He was in a very weakened condition and 1 CONC it was thought he would expire at any moment. Medical aid was summoned 1 CONC and after the dressing of his wound he rallied and gave a statement which 1 CONC caused the arrest of the three named above. 1 CONT 1 CONT The Starr family came to this county several years ago from Indiana and 1 CONC have been frequently in our courts charged with misdemeanors. Some two 1 CONC or three years ago a son of C.C.
