1 CONT You have probably been wondering about me since the invasion began,
1 CONC and I just want you to know that I am getting along fine. We have not
1 CONC been hit, and have suffered no casualties although we were in the first
1 CONC wave and have been in the thick of battle.
1 CONT I can't tell you too much of it now, but I can give you an idea of
1 CONT some of the highlights. We have seen about everything you can imagine in
1 CONC the way of modern warfare. as we crossed the English Channel, we passed
1 CONC through what was supposed to be one of the most effective mine fields in
1 CONC the world, but we got thru' safely. When we go across, we shot at enemy
1 CONC gun emplacements, tank and troop concentrations, ammunitions dumps,
1 CONC observation posts and other vital targets.
1 CONT There have been many unpleasant sights, but I won't tell you about
1 CONC those now. At one time, we had 27 enemy prisoners on board, but had to
1 CONC send them to another ship which took them back to a prison camp. They
1 CONC didn't look like supermen to me. We also had 29 wounded U.S. Rangers
1 CONC aboard who were brought to us by a small boat from an isolated beach
1 CONC head. their wounds were treated on board, and only one died. He had been
1 CONC lying wounded on the beach for two days before we could get him aboard,
1 CONC and he was just too far gone when he got to us.
1 CONT We have been under attack by enemy planes and glider bombs at night,
1 CONC and have seen many planes go down in flames. There have also been shell
1 CONC splashes in the water fairly close to us, caused by the enemy firing at
1 CONC ships along the shore, and most of us consider ourselves lucky
1 CONC considering what we have seen happen to others.

1 CONT One of our shipmates was right when he said, "the Navy always puts
1 CONC the Texas in the toughest and biggest fights." As you have learned from
1 CONC the home town paper, this time our job was to give heavy gunfire support
1 CONC ot the Marines landing on Iwo Jima.
1 CONT When we learned we were going, we had a good idea that it was going
1 CONC to be a tough go, because the Japs are fanatical fighters, and if they
1 CONC put up such a scrap for islands far away from home like Taraw, what would
1 CONC they do to defend this 2x4 fortress island literally on their front
1 CONC door-step? It's a rough and rugged island, mostly volcanic rock with
1 CONC thousands of crevices and cliffs which made it ideal to defend, but
1 CONC wicked to invade. remember, this island has been part of their Empire for
1 CONC a long time and they really had a chance to get "holed in". Actually I
1 CONC think they must have all lived in caves, because from the ship we
1 CONC couldn't see anyone moving on the island.
1 CONT We pounded the island for three days before the Marines landed, and
1 CONT then on D-day, when they came plowing with their landing boats, and ships
1 CONC stood off the beach, the bow of one ship close to the stern of one
1 CONC ahead, and poured tons of explosive shells into that island. We wanted to
1 CONC soften it up as much as possible and to do all we could for those Marines
1 CONC heading for the beach. I want to tell you those Marines have what it
1 CONC takes and they take what they land on, no matter what. By the fight
1 CONC they've put on out here they've seen to it that Iwo is no
1 CONT longer just the name of an island in the Pacific. It's a lost more than
1 CONC athat. When you mention Iwo, you think of the same things you have in
1 CONC mind when
1 CONT you say Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan.
1 CONT As I said, Iwo is an exinct volcano(although it seems to come alive
1 CONC again with smoke and flame from our shells), and at the southern end is
1 CONC Mt. Surbachi. This mountain was honey-combed with enemy guns and
1 CONC emplacements and proved to be a miniature Rock of Gibraltar. For three
1 CONC days we watched Suribachi, trying to follow the Marine advance up her
1 CONC craggy side. Then suddenly on the third day - it was a beautiful day-
1 CONC there it was. On the highest peak of the mountain , there was Old Glory.
1 CONC I guess I've seen the American flag hundreds of times before back home,
1 CONC but I don't think it ever
1 CONT looked so good as it did there on top of Mt. Suribachi.
1 CONT The Texas' luck held good, and we came through without injury to the
1 CONT ship or anyone on it. We did our best and as you know, when the Texas
1 CONC does her
1 CONT best, that's practically perfect (or could I just be prejudiced?)
1 CONT At present all is quiet, and removed from the scenes of battle, we

1 CONT resting (if you ever rest in the Navy) and getting our fill of sunshine.

1 CONT the rabbit home and it was her pet. Then one day they had stew for supper

1 CONT a grocer gave them a turkey for Thanksgiving. They cooked it and sat it on
1 CONT the table. When they returned with the other dishes, the turkey was gone.

1 CONT kindness of heart and acts of charity. She had been united by letter with
1 CONT the Methodist church since moving here in 1914 and was a constant
1 CONT worker for the cause of Christianity. Her passing is greatly deplored and

1 CONT sympathy of the entire community goes out to the husband and children in

1 CONT hour of bereavement.

1 CONC When the baby was born unexpectedly, Jimmy and Jeannie the parents
1 CONT had just moved into a trailer in Mary Violet Sanders (Jimmy's adoptive
1 CONC mother).
1 CONT When they went to Hunstsville Hospital, Jimmy told the admitting clerk
1 CONT that they did not have an address, they lived in their parents yard.
1 CONT
1 CONT When the baby was born at Huntsville Hospital a spinal block (now known
1 CONC as an epidural) was adminstered. Something went wrong and it did not work
1 CONC the first time so they administered it a second time. When the mother
1 CONC walked to the nursery, her head at the back of her neck began to hurt so
1 CONC badly her knees buckled. She had to lay perfectly still for 72 hours with
1 CONC medication.
1 CONT
1 CONT Several days after arriving home with the baby, friends came to visit and
1 CONC the baby became ill during the night. It would not quit vomiting. The
1 CONC parents had to walk to Violet Sanders house to use a phone to call the
1 CONC pediatrician since the phone had not been installed. It was the weekend
1 CONC and Dr. Townsley was on call for Dr. Anne Wouters. He felt that it was
1 CONC just new parent jitters. Later in the early morning hours, he was called
1 CONC again. He said to bring the baby to the hospital. Michael had weighed 5
1 CONC lb. 2 oz. when born, but when he got to the hospital he weighed only 4
1 CONC lb. 11 oz. The situation was grim. The pediatrician demanded that the
1 CONC baby be put back into the newborn intensive care and a special room was
1 CONC set up for him. Numerous tests were run. It was determined that he had
1 CONC adrenogenital syndrome - salt loosing form. This was an inherited
1 CONC disease, but no one had ever heard of the disease on any sides of the
1 CONC family. When asked what the baby's chances were, no one knew because the
1 CONC disease is rare. However, Dr. Townsley had seen a case in a baby during
1 CONC his army career. When asked how that case turned out, he said it did not.
1 CONC This fact and the enormous amount of tubes and equipment being used on
1 CONC the baby led to many tears in the father's waiting room at Huntsville
1 CONC Hospital -- a place where everyone else was waiting with joy.

1 CONT After the child's death, the parents were asked to go to Birmingham
1 CONC Genetics Clinic for further study. It was recommended that amniocentesis
1 CONC be used for any further pregnancies.

1 CONT Mrs. Margrete Neutze, a resident of Leon Springs for 60 years at the home
1 CONT of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Stallworth on the Fredricksburg at Los Angeles
1 CONT Terrace at 3:00 o'clock. Mrs. Neutze was 79 years of age and had lived in
1 CONT Texas for 68 years.
1 CONT
1 CONT She was born in Baden-Baden, Germany, October 23, 1843, the daughter of
1 CONT George Obert, and she came to the United States with her parents,
1 CONT 2 brothers and 3 sisters when she was 11 years old. Landing at the port
1 CONT of Indianola, the family proceeded to New Braunfels, which had just
1 CONT been founded, and from there they went to Leon Springs.
1 CONT
1 CONT There it was she met John Neutze and their wedding followed. They were
1 CONC married in San Antonio in 1863 after which they returned to Leon Springs,
1 CONC where the family has lived ever since. John Neutze died about eighteen
1 CONC years ago. He was a prominent farmer, and ranchman of that section and
1 CONC owned much land. Part of this land is what is now known as Camp Bullis
1 CONC and was leased from Mrs. Neutze about four years ago.

1 CONT Mrs. Neutze was the mother of fifteen children, of who, twelve are alive
1 CONC as
1 CONT follows: Mrs. Annie Jaschke, Mrs. Sophie Schmeltzer, Mrs. Emma Stallworth,
1 CONT Mrs. Gussie Collins, Robert Neutze, and Miss Lillie Neutze, all of San
1 CONC Antonio;
1 CONT Mrs. Lina Keown of Los Angeles, Cal.; Misses Hannah and Elizabeth Neutze

1 CONT George Neutze of Leon Springs; Vernon Neutze of Copita, Texas and John

1 CONT There are also 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. All children

1 CONC On last Easter Sunday, her children, grandchildren, and
1 CONC great-grandchildren gathered at the Leon Springs home for a family
1 CONC reunion, and her birthday anniversary was also an occasion for a reunion.

1 CONT Besides rearing her children, Mrs. Neutze had also adopted and reared 7 of

1 CONT The funeral is to be held Wednesday with arrangements for charge of the

1 CONT About his living at Copita, (pronounced Ko-pea'ta), Brooks County,
1 CONC Texas. Brooks County is in brush country about 200 miles SSE of San
1 CONC Antonio--still a sparsely populated area. For many years the main
1 CONC industry was dairy farming-- as it is today with a large creamery at
1 CONC Falfurrias, the county seat. Also, now there is oil and ranching so
1 CONC perhaps you could contact the county seat records if you want to narrow
1 CONC down dates.
1 CONT Besides my recall of Ferdinand, I talked with Elizabeth "ditta" who
1 CONC is my age and her oldest brother 2 or 3 years older -- Johnny.
1 CONT These are the facts as we recall, but we don't know dates:
1 CONT Ferdinand lived and worked in the community of Copita (this name
1 CONC doesn't show up on maps -- so it probably part of Falfurrias).
1 CONT He took his share of the estate to buy a farm. Something happened
1 CONC anad he lost the money-- if it was because of a bad deal or inability to
1 CONC keep up payments or whatever. We don't recall hearing or maybe not
1 CONC understanding what happened.
1 CONT It seems tat his losing the money is what caused his problems.
1 CONT As to dates--since his mother died in 1920, I presume he got his
1 CONC share after the estate was settled--to hazard a guess perhaps between

1 CONT My father was born in 1880 in Niche, N.D. He left here when he was twenty

1 CONT man. He came from a family of thirteen. He left after a family feud
1 CONT and never had any more to do with his Brothers and sisters. My
1 CONT grandfather died when my father was sixteen years old.

1 CONT Grandfather Neutze left home (Cologne) at age 14 and joined the German
1 CONT Navy. Later he deserted and joined the American navy. He deserted and

1 CONT the Union Army and fought in the Civil War. Then he signed to fight
1 CONC Indians
1 CONT in the West. He got the farm on Red River in North Dakota due to his army
1 CONC service.
1 CONT Grandma Neutze tried to get aid after he died but she was told he was
1 CONC listed as a
1 CONT deserter. Both of my Neutze grandparents were long gone before I was born.

1 CONT their house burned when my dad was fifteen and all records went up in

1 CONT My aunt Loise came and stayed a month at our farm when I was twelve and

1 CONT about all of the contact I had with my father's family. Except one of my
1 CONT first cousins came to my garage one afternoon. We talked a lot. We have

1 CONT My great grandfather Neutze in Cologne, Germany was a civil engineer and

1 CONT the guiding force on a railroad to the East. That was the story from my

1 CONT My father homesteaded on government land at Lawen, Oregon about 1912.
1 CONT But my parents moved to Idaho when I was 2. Grew to manhood in Idaho.

1 CONT In 1938 I came to Shasta County - Redding ca. I cam to Anderson in 1948

1 CONT into the garage business. I served in the infantry in Europe. I was
1 CONC wounded in action at Linnich Am. Roer
1 CONT - as we tried to cross. That was the end of the war for me as I was
1 CONC limited service

1 CONT Later I was stationed in Marburg Germany. My German girl friend knew a

1 CONT shook up the slate shingles. As near as we could ascertain the lady was a

1 CONT to my father. We just went one time and I am sorry we did not return.

1 CONT Gus and Pete Neutze both live in Uvalde, Tx. Most of Pete's children
1 CONT reside in Boerne (pronounced burney) and
1 CONT San Antonio, Tx. Most of Gus' children reside in Uvalde I think but I'm

1 CONT I also know that Shannon's dad, Robert, was in WW II. He was in the
1 CONC Navy.
1 CONT He was a submarine mechanic.
1 CONT He was stationed in Hawaii on the SEA DOG.
