1 CONT In the name of the Benevolent Father of all, I Moses Starr of Falls 
1 CONC Township, Hocking County in the state of Ohio knowing the uncertainty of 
1 CONC death and being of sound mind and memory, and being desirous of disposing 
1 CONC of the property with which I have been blessed by the giver of all good 
1 CONC and directing the manner of its distribution, among my family and 
1 CONC children after my decease: do herby make and publish this my last Will 
1 CONC and Testament and hereby revoke all others.

1 CONT Item 1st.  I give and devise to my beloved wife Sarah in lieu of her 
1 CONC dower and distributive share of my estate one equal and undivided half of 
1 CONC all my real estate consisting of about 200 acres, being the farm on which 
1 CONC I now live, to have and to hold and use and occupy during her natural 
1 CONC life time and no lnoger, and also one third of all my personal property 
1 CONC of which I may be owner at the time of my death during her natural life 
1 CONC and no longer and at the death of my said wife the said real estate so 
1 CONC given in lieu of her dower and such part of the personal property so 
1 CONC gaiven as aforesaid to my said wife in lieu of her distributive share of

1 CONC desire him to have, but I desire that his son James Ellis Clowe, shall

1 CONT Item 9.  As to my step daugher Mary Ann, wife of John Willimas, I desire 
1 CONC that she should have the sum of one hundred dollars in addition to what 
1 CONC she was already receive, to be paid at the time of my decease, and no

1 CONT Item 10.  As to my daughter Marth J. wife of George Hite, I have lately 
1 CONC deeded to her forty acres of land which in addition to what she has 
1 CONC already received, is all that I desire she should have of my estate.

1 CONT Item 11.  As to my son Thomas Starr, I have lately deeded to him 80 acres 
1 CONC of land and desire that he should have a lot of land off of home place on 
1 CONC which I now live, adjoining his land on which he now lives on the east of 
1 CONC about 15 or 20 acres, commencing at the southwest of a forty acre lot, 
1 CONC then to run east over to the hollow, near a beech tree, then north across 
1 CONC the forty acre lot to a beech and white oak, marked "H 3t.", about 2 rods 
1 CONC from the north line of which he shall have possession after my decease 
1 CONC which in addition to what he had heretofore received is all that I desire 
1 CONC he shall have of my estate.

1 CONT Item 12.  As to my son Moses Starr, I have lately deeded him 160 acres of 
1 CONC land which in addition to what he has heretofore receiv ed, is all that I 
1 CONC desire he shall have of my estate.

1 CONT Item 13.  As to my son Noah W. Starr, I hereby give; and bequeth to him 
1 CONC the home farm on which I now live containing about 200 acres, less the 
1 CONC lot above devised to my son Thomas Starr, and subject to the right of my 
1 CONC wife in the manner and form above described in this will, which shall be 
1 CONC considered to include the dwelling house, water, garden, orchard, etc. to 
1 CONC my said wife her life time and no longer as aforesaid and after the death 
1 CONC of myself and my said wife said son Noah W. Starr and also it is my 
1 CONC deisire that all the personal peoperty, money and effects that may in any 
1 CONC way or manner belong to me at the time of my decease, and after the 
1 CONC decease of my said wife, shall belong to and is hereby bequeathed to my 
1 CONC said son, Noah W. Starr, provided, however that my said son, Noah W. 
1 CONC Starr, shall pay first out of my effects all the legacies provided for in 
1 CONC this will, to the person entitled to the same, and at the times mentioned 
1 CONC in the will. Also that he shall pay all just claims that may exist againt 
1 CONC me at the time of my decease, which shall include all funeral expense of 
1 CONC myself and wife, and further that he shall take care of me; and my wife 
1 CONC so long as either of us may live. But the last clause as to taking care 
1 CONC of me and my wife, we will see to it ourselves, and after our death there 
1 CONC is no claim to exist against my said Noarh W. Starr on that account.

1 CONT Item 14.  I hereby appoint John Williams and my said son Noah W. Starr, 
1 CONC my Executors with full power and authority to carry this Will into effect

1 CONT for something ----- perhaps not attending church and on September 20,
1 CONT 1754, they were read out of Meeting Quaker. They became Methodists. Moses
1 CONT and his first wife had difficulties and parted. Quaker records in Chester
1 CONT Co, PA tell of his first marriage and difficulties.

1 CONT Mose Starr, son of James and Rachel laybourne Starr, was born 21, Dec 
1 CONC 1720 in Longdon Grove twp. Chester Co, Pa. He removed at the age of 
1 CONC eleven with his parents in 1731 to Phoenixville, Pa. He lived on the 
1 CONC Starr farm in the Manavon tract, became a miller, and operated a mill 
1 CONC with his brother James Starr but sold the business in 1748 to Samuel 
1 CONC Jones and Jacob Hilderbrand.

1 CONC Davis, born in 1718. Some sources say they were married in 1745 at East

1 CONT It is not certain where in New Jersey Moses and Margaret lived. Some 
1 CONC think he lived in Somerset Co., however, there was a Moses Starr on a 
1 CONC list of travern owners in Hunterdon Co., N.J. It is beleived that most of 
1 CONC their children were probably born in Bridgewater twp., Somerset Co., 
1 CONC Cumberlan Co, or Hunterdon Co., N.J.

1 CONC Tuscorora Mountains where he bought land. There are a few tax records for 
1 CONC Moses Starr. They sold their land in 1794. Their son John Starr, then 
1 CONC living in Hampshire Co., West Va. was a witness to the deed. It is not 
1 CONC know what happened to Moses and Margaret Starr. They probably went to 
1 CONC Hampshire Co., West Virginia to live as most of their children had moved

1 CONC Philadelphia, , PA.  He was Reformed Church, the Calvinist church of the 
1 CONC Palatinate.  The family moved to VA and then SC after the death of Petter 
1 CONC Quattlebaum.   According to M M Quattlebaum, Petter was the only 
1 CONC Quattlebaum to emmigrate from Germany between 1700-1800 and all

1 CONT In 1713 James Starr bought land in New Garden, Twp; Chester Co. Pa from 
1 CONC William Penn for 20 lbs. per 100 acres. Others buying land at the same 
1 CONC time were Michael Lightfoot, brother of Margaret Lightfoot Starr, Joseph 
1 CONC Hutton, stepbrother of Rachel Laybourne Starr, and Thomas Jackson. Many 
1 CONC of them lived on their farms for several years before getting titles for 
1 CONC their land.

1 CONT    In 1714 James Starr was chosen clerk of the Newark Meeting, however as 
1 CONC other Quakers settle in the area they decided a new meeting place was 
1 CONC needed, thus the New Garden Mtd. was established in 1718 with James being 
1 CONC elected the clerk and overseer. He served until 1726
1 CONT
1 CONT    In 1731 James and Rachel left New Garden twp. and removed to the 
1 CONC present site of Phoenixville, Pa, where he purchased 230 acres of the 
1 CONC "Manovan Tract" from the widow of David Lloyd. The land was located at 
1 CONC the junction of the French Creek and the Schuylkill River. It commenced 
1 CONC on Main Bridge  St. and the Fountain Inn, then crossing the north side of 
1 CONC French Creek, eastward within a few feet of the water and back again to 
1 CONC the canal ;Starr St in Phoenixville was named in honor of James Starr. He 
1 CONC gave land at the corner of Church and Main Sts. for a burial ground which 
1 CONC was to be held by the Starr family for as long as it was needed by them. 
1 CONC An article written byh Samuel W. Pennypacker in the Annals of Schuylkill 
1 CONC Twp. was that in the "Roades Field". The next respect to its antiquity 
1 CONC was one at the northeast corner of Main and Church Sts., set apart as a 
1 CONC family burying place by James Starr, the earliest settle in Phoenixville 
1 CONC upon the south side of the creek.

1 CONT    Owning all the ground for a mile about him, he could well afford to 
1 CONC give one acre to the dead, and probably thought as he separated it from 
1 CONC the wilderness, that in this spot he and his children would rest until 
1 CONC the final awakening. One after another of the Starr family passed away 
1 CONC without leaving descendants to inherit their lands or their name and 
1 CONC where the last of them had been carried to the family yard, the Briarean 
1 CONC streets of a growing and busy town had stretched around and about it.

1 CONT    After a decline of the race for whom it was intended, it at first met 
1 CONC with neglect and then became a kind of Potter's field, In it were buried 
1 CONC the British who died or were killed in the neighborhood during the 
1 CONC Revolutionary War, and the foreign workmen who perished from a fatal 
1 CONC fever while digging the Schuylkill Canal.

1 CONT    This Cemetery has been removed to Maiden Creek, Pa a few years ago, an 
1 CONC act of Assembly was obtained to untwist the slight knots tied by the will 
1 CONC of James Starr. The story goes that when clearing the land to build a 
1 CONC drygoods store upon the site of the burying place it was disclosed that a 
1 CONC careless worker had thrown the bones together in a box and carted them 
1 CONC away.

1 CONT    James Starr was chosen a member of the Board of commissioners by the 
1 CONC Assy for the purpose of improving the navigation of the Schuylkill river, 
1 CONC having as fellow commissioners, among others, were David Rittenhouse and 
1 CONC Abraham Lincoln. The latter was probably the grandfather of Abraham 
1 CONC Lincoln who later became president of the United States.

1 CONT    James is thought to have been the first setteler on the south side of 
1 CONC French Creek and the first to make use of its water power. He built a saw 
1 CONC mill, grist mill and a log cabin for the Miller.

1 CONT    In 1731 the business was placed under the control of his two sons, 
1 CONC James and Moses Starr. The carried on the business for several years and 
1 CONC finally rented it to Rowland Richards. In 1748 the Starr brothers sold

1 CONC Moses Starr and his wife, Deborah (King) Starr, from Old Castle, County 
1 CONC Meath, Ireland, took up land in the Maiden Creek Vally about 1730 or 
1 CONC 1731. The indian name of the stream was Ontelaunee, meaning "The little 
1 CONC maid of the big mother", the Schuylkill river being the big mother. The 
1 CONC English settlers translated it into Maiden Creek.

1 CONT Moses and Deborah Starr settled along this stream about three miles up 
1 CONC stream from where it flows into the river. They were the first white 
1 CONC settlers in this section of Berks county. They were soon followed by 
1 CONC Francis Parvin who settled three miles to the south of them at what is 
1 CONC now Berkley and by Jacob Lightfoot who settled just across the Maiden 
1 CONC Creek from them. These were also followed by a number of other families, 
1 CONC all English speakingFriends, among them theHuttons, , Willits, Wilys, 
1 CONC Pearsons, Penroses, Wrights and Lees.

1 CONT Moses Starr was the first and for many years the only representative of 
1 CONC Berks County in the Provincial Assy, Moses and Deborah Starr built their 
1 CONC house on the west bank of the Maiden Creek and there they raised a large 
1 CONC family.

1 CONT Moses and Deborah Starr's son John, stayed on the home farm and this farm 
1 CONC (since called Starr Farm) continued in the hands of his descendants until 
1 CONC it was taked over by the city of Reading in 1927 for the new water 
1 CONC project.

1 CONT Moses Starr owned land in the Northwest part of of Section 35, Lynn Grove
1 CONT Township, Jasper Co., Iowa, April 24, 1848, when this clain was made.
1 CONT Born in Virginia in 1787, but moved to Ohio when quie young. There he
1 CONT engaged in mercantile persuits. In 1839 they moved to Iowa.
1 CONT In 1853 the Starr family started the long and perilous journey across the
1 CONT plains. Ox and horse teams furnishing the motive power. When they reached
1 CONT Dales Oregon, Moses was taken ill and soon after reaching Clackamas he
1 CONT died. Saddened and bereaved thought she was, Elizabeth took his place at
1 CONT the head of the little band and lead them to there destination in Benton
1 CONT Co. Oregon. There she took up a Donation land claim of 160 acres. She
1 CONT improved her land and made a home. Her ability as a physician was of
1 CONT unusual order and many a sick room was brightened by her presence.

1 CONT beleived to be Elizabeth Hatfield, related to the fueding Hatfield's of
1 CONT West Virginia-Kentucky.She was born Februrary  5, 1848and was educated at
1 CONT the Carthage Female Academy where she was liked and considered a very
1 CONT pretty girl. She married first Jim Reed (said to have taken place on
1 CONT horseback). Years later she said she married Jim Reed because he killed
1 CONT the solder who had killed her brother Bud. Bud had been a big influnce in
1 CONT her life and she vowed to married the man who avenged Bud's death. It was
1 CONT as Reed's wife that Bella's life of crime really began. A little girl was
1 CONT born in 1869 she was named Rosa Lee Reed and was apparently given to
1 CONT Reed's mother to raise. She was later known to history as Pearl Younger.
1 CONT During this time she met Sam as well as moved to California with Pearl.
1 CONT Life was good at this time and a second child was born, a son named
1 CONT Edwin. One night while Reed was eating diner a John Morris entered the
1 CONT room and demanded Redd surrender himself. Reed didn't and John shot Reed
1 CONT through the heart. Morris collected the $1700 reward but it did little
1 CONT good because he was killed a short time later. Bella's father died during
1 CONT this time and she moved back to Missouri and acted as a "fence" for
1 CONT stolen animals.The James brothers and Youngers stopped off at Bella's
1 CONT during this time. The rumor circulated that she was at one time married
1 CONT to Cole Younger, the noted outlaw. These reports were further bolstered
1 CONT by the fact that Pearl Redd sometimes went under the name Pearl Younger.
1 CONT Another man on Pearl's list was an indian outlaw named Blue Duck. On June
1 CONT 5, 1880 she married Sam Starr and settled on a 1000 acre claim near the
1 CONT Canadian River near Eufaula Oklahoma and move into a log cabin. This
1 CONT became a popular meeting place for some of the most notorious outlaws of
1 CONT the day. While here Sam & Bella were arrested on a horse theft and
1 CONT possesion of liquor charge. The Starr's said there were framed and
1 CONT "Hanging Judge" Parker apparently believed them. They were given light
1 CONT sentences of one year each in the Detroit Michigan House of Correction.
1 CONT On release the Starr's returned to Younger's Bendwith Pearl and a orphan
1 CONT Mabel Harrison.shortly after this Sam was killed. on Sunday Februrary 3,
1 CONT 1889 Bella road to the King Ranch Stare to eat dinner with the
1 CONT proprieter. Bella left the store about 1 pm, stopped by Mrs Barnes for
1 CONT some corn and passed the time until 3 pm. At 4 pm Mike Hoyt spotted
1 CONT Bella's running horse. Hoyt road back up the road and foun Bella body
1 CONT with two shots from a shootgun in the back. It will probably remain a
1 CONT mystery but many beleive a neighbor (Edgar Watson) had done the killing.
