The Minute 1 CONC Book stated that "Ordered that the Church Wardens of Hamilton Parish bind 1 CONC Daniel Lowry and John Lowry to Joshua Tullos." Daniel was under 21 years 1 CONC when he was bound; he was born around the years of 1757-1762. Daniel's 1 CONC exact birthplace, as to country, state, or county, is still unknown. 1 CONT From 1759-1780, all 16 and over were taxed with a personal property 1 CONC tax. In 1778 Joshua Tullos paid Daniel's tax, making Daniel at least 1 CONC 16. So when Daniel was bound out to Tullos, he was at least ten years 1 CONC old. He was also placed in the Southern District, the southern half of 1 CONC Fauquier county. Usually, when the Church Wardens bound out children, it 1 CONC meant that the family could not provide for them; either the children had 1 CONC been orphaned or the family was indigent. As a 1748 Virginia law stated 1 CONT 1 CONT To prevent the evil consequences attending the neglect 1 CONC or inability of poor people to bring up their children in 1 CONC an honest and orderly course of life where . . . it shall appear 1 CONC to the court that he, she or they neglect . . . instruction in 1 CONC the principles of Christianity 1 CONT . . . it shall be lawful for the churchwardens of the 1 CONC parish . . . by order of their county court, to bind every such 1 CONC child . . . in the same manner . . . as the law directs for 1 CONC poor orphan children. 1 CONT 1 CONT In November 1773 Daniel's other brother Frederick, around the ages 1 CONC of 2-7, was bound out to Isaac Arnold in the northern half of the 1 CONC county. Since Frederick was bound out 18 months later than his brothers, 1 CONC the implication may be that the brothers were not orphans but perhaps 1 CONC from a poor or single-mother family. 1 CONT Joshua Tullos paid the 1778 personal property tax for Daniel in the 1 CONC Southern District of the county. Daniel was probably 16-21. 1 CONT Most likely, by 1782 Daniel was free of Tullos (the year his brother 1 CONC John complained to the court and was released). No mention of Daniel was 1 CONC made in the complaint. His brother John was then bound to someone else 1 CONC to learn the trade of a stone mason, a skill that Daniel might have also 1 CONC learned while with Tullos. 1 CONT Daniel acted as the witness to two deed transactions on March 21, 1 CONC 1785: Landon and Elizabeth Carter of King George County granted to Peter 1 CONC Grant 375 acres on Summerduck Run; both Daniel and John Embry made their 1 CONC marks. The Carters then deeded 100 acres of Lot No. 1, adjoining the 1 CONC lands of Thomas Keith, near Rock Run to John Embry, the father of 1 CONC Daniel's future wife. Daniel made his mark as his witness signature. 1 CONT On April 26, 1786, Daniel married Ann Embry, daughter of the above 1 CONC John, in Fauquier county. Daniel made his mark on the certificate. John 1 CONC Embry wrote a brief statement declaring his consent of the marriage, and 1 CONC he acted as the bondsman for the marriage. 1 CONT Looking at the historic map of Fauquier County at the southern 1 CONC district, we see the area where Daniel spent almost half of his life. 1 CONC Near the town of Somerville is a Tulloss Graveyard, probably near the 1 CONC place where Daniel was sent to when he was bound out. About 6 1/2 miles 1 CONC to the Northwest of the Tulloss graveyard, is the Arnold graveyard, near 1 CONC Black Jack Hill. Daniel's brother Frederick who was bound to Arnold 1 CONC wasn't so far away. About four miles Southwest of the Tulloss 1 CONC graveyard, we see Rock Run near the Keith graveyard, the area Daniel was 1 CONC in when he witnessed the deed in 1785. The Embry family was very 1 CONC prominent at this time owning a good deal of land around the bottom of 1 CONC the county. An Embry historic house still exists on Summerduck Run and 1 CONC another one near the town of Morrisville. Also notice to the north of 1 CONC the Tulloss graveyard the location of the graveyard for the Kenners, a 1 CONC family whose importance will later be discussed. 1 CONT Around 1787, maybe in an attempt to acquire land of their own, 1 CONC Daniel and Ann moved west to Frederick County, Virginia. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to the 1787 Frederick County Personal Property Tax list, 1 CONC Daniel was bound out to John Cordell. If he had bound himself, it was 1 CONC probably due to the fact that he didn't have enough money yet to buy a 1 CONC parcel of land. We also know he was over 21 because he was married, 1 CONC although not always a guarantee of age, and because in John Cordell's 1 CONC 1787 Personal Property Tax listing, he had no white males ages 16-21. 1 CONT On January 20, 1789, Daniel and Ann have a son they named Frederick, 1 CONC after Daniel's brother, the son that will lead us on in our story. Most 1 CONC likely, as with families at this time, Daniel and Ann had more children. 1 CONC Given the lack of specific documentation, not all of the children may be 1 CONC known. 1 CONT Daniel was not listed in the 1800 Frederick County Tax List. He 1 CONC might have been simply missed or out of the county at the time. 1 CONC Coincidentally, the 1800 Culpeper County Tax List showed a Daniel Lowry 1 CONC with Alexander and William Lowry, both of which names appear later in 1 CONC Frederick County history. Culpeper County adjoins Fauquier County. 1 CONT The 1810 Frederick County Census had, depending on which version is 1 CONC cited, Daniel's last name spelled LOWRY and LAWRY, a spelling which was 1 CONC quite frequent in Frederick County. The Census showed that Daniel had 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 male under the age of 10 1 CONT 1 male 16-26 1 CONT 1 male over 45 (Daniel) 1 CONT 3 females under 10 1 CONT 2 females 10-16 1 CONT 2 females 16-26 1 CONT 1 female over 45 (Ann) 1 CONT 1 CONT There were a total of nine children, perhaps not including Frederick who 1 CONC had married in 1809 and may have been living away from Daniel's home. 1 CONT Since exact birth dates of children are not known and there are not 1 CONC extant bible records for this family, an approximation may be used to 1 CONC decipher when and how many children Daniel and Ann had. 1 CONT A commonality exists between several of the marriages in Frederick 1 CONC County: George, Catharine, Juliet, James, Elizabeth, and even Frederick 1 CONC were married by James Walls, the Methodist minister of the area from the 1 CONC years 1799-1821. Polly's marriage was the exception with George Frye 1 CONC being the minister. Here are the marriages arranged chronologically and 1 CONC as stated on the actual marriage returns: 1 CONT 1 CONT 9 Sept. 1809 Frederick Lowery to Elizabeth Shell 1 CONT 19 Feb. 1811 Elizabeth Lowery to Henry Rutter 1 CONT 14 Aug. 1811 James Lowery to Mary Dutton 1 CONT 26 Dec. 1814 George Lowery to Nancy Boyce. Bondsman, George 1 CONC Lowrey 1 CONT 1 CONT Serving as the bondsmen in the last two marriages (in 1824) were 1 CONC Frederick and George, sons of Daniel. A further listing of Frederick 1 CONC County marriages from 1824 to 1830 will be listed later. 1 CONT In February or March 1816, Daniel, around the ages of 53-58, died. 1 CONC The inventory and appraisal occurred on March 4, 1816. The sale of his 1 CONC goods (to pay off debts) occurred on March 5, 1816. Among his buyers 1 CONC were Ann Lowry(his wife), George Lowry ( his son) and Mary Lowry 1 CONC (daughter?). A will was not left behind. If Daniel ever owned land or 1 CONC deeded land, it wasn't listed in the Frederick County deed book 1 CONC 1743-1839. One of the buyers at his estate sale was Richard Jones who 1 CONC married Daniel's daughter Polly. 1 CONT The readable portions of the inventory show the following goods of 1 CONC Daniel Lowery: 1 bay mare, 1 red cow, 4 head [of] sheep, 1 pied cow, 1 1 CONC white sow and 8 pigs, 1 black sow and six pigs, 4 shoates, 1 shovel 1 CONC plough, 1 knitting box, 1 mattock, 1 shovel, 1 ax, 1 weaving loom/gear 1 CONC shaft/mill, 1 saddle, 1 log chair, 1 collar, 1 small collar, 1 frying 1 CONC pan, 1 pot rack, 1 bed/bedclothes/stead, 1 shotgun, 4 Windsor chairs, 4 1 CONC split-bottom chairs, 1 pine chest, 1 small bed/bedclothes/stead, 1 table, 1 CONC 1 water fan(?), 1 draper and furnitures, 1 set of ladles, 1 saw, 1 pair 1 CONC of sheep shears, 1 handsaw, 1 drawing knife, 2 hammers, SHOEMAKER'S 1 CONC TOOLS/FASTS/CASKETS [my emphasis], 1 lot of rye, 1 hackle, 1 queling 1 CONC wheel/swifts(?), 1 cradle and scythe, 1 big wheel, 1 small wheel, 1 tub, 1 CONC 1 iron wedge box, 2 augers, 2 chisels, 1 lot of lumber, 2 old scythes, 1 1 CONC meat tub, 1 cradle, 1 grindstone, 1 stack of fodder, 1 stack of rye 1 CONC straw, and more illegible items. The inventory of his goods added up to 1 CONC $349.25. 1 CONT The 1820 Census showed Ann as still being alive in Frederick 1 CONC County. She had a son under 10, a daughter 10-16 and a daughter 16-26. 1 CONC It is not known when she died and it is doubtful that she left a will. 1 CONC She might have died between 1820 and 1824 since her sons Frederick and 1 CONC George served as the bondsmen in 1824. 0 @I002@ INDI 1 NAME Ann /Embry/ 1 SEX F 1 DEAT 2 DATE BET. 1820 - 1824 2 PLAC Frederick County, VA 1 FAMS @F002@ 0 @I003@ INDI 1 NAME Frederick /Lowery/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 JAN 1789 2 PLAC Frederick County, VA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 6 DEC 1876 2 PLAC Henry County, IN 1 FAMS @F007@ 1 FAMS @F008@ 1 FAMC @F002@ 1 NOTE @NI003@ 0 @NI003@ NOTE 1 CONC On September 9, 1809, Frederick married Elizabeth Shell in Frederick 1 CONC County, VA. 1 CONT Frederick, if we take his later life as an example, most likely took 1 CONC to farming in the area. 1 CONT When his father Daniel died in 1816, there is no clear indication as 1 CONC to why Frederick did not attend the estate sale as did some others in his 1 CONC family. 1 CONT An 1820 Virginia Census lists Frederick Lowry as living in Frederick 1 CONC County still: 1 CONT 3 males under 10 1 CONT 1 male 10-16 1 CONT 1 male 16-26 1 CONT 1 male 26-45 (Frederick) 1 CONT 2 females under 10 1 CONT 1 female 26-45 (Elizabeth) 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1824, Frederick Loury served as bondsman for the marriage of John 1 CONC Boyce to Margaret Lowry in Frederick County,VA. 1 CONT Around 1826, Frederick decided to move west. A statement from 1 CONC Frederick's son George stated that George was born in Ohio in 1815, 1 CONC implying that his brothers born after him were also born in Ohio. This 1 CONC moves the date of Frederick moving the family from VA to OH back to 1815, 1 CONC much earlier than thought. But then how do we explain the 1820 Frederick 1 CONC Co. Census record? However, the family members sometimes were confused 1 CONC as to where they were actually born. If George settled in Henry County 1 CONC in 1831, this is seven years earlier than when his father Frederick came 1 CONC to the county (1838). We know this because Frederick had a couple 1 CONC children born in OH after 1831. So George, at age 16, may have come out 1 CONC to IN ahead of the others, to scout it out. 1 CONT However, around 1829, Frederick and his family made it to Belmont 1 CONC County, Ohio. Before this year, there are no Belmont County Personal Tax 1 CONC Records for 1827 and 1828 for Frederick. Although we know that by 1829 1 CONC that the family was settled somewhere in Ohio. There is some confusion 1 CONC as to whether it was Ohio or Wheeling or Virginia. At this time West 1 CONC Virginia didn't exist. Within Virginia was an Ohio County. Within 1 CONC Belmont county was a Wheeling Township. In some records Henry is 1 CONC recorded as being born in Belmont County OH, across the state border from 1 CONC Wheeling, West Virginia. After this, some of the children are listed as 1 CONC being born in Belmont County, Ohio. Thus, Frederick is one of the early 1 CONC settlers of Ohio, it having been made a state in 1803. As to where they 1 CONC really were at specific times, the locations sometimes get confusing: 1 CONC Ohio County is in W. Virginia but it was called Virginia at the time. 1 CONC Wheeling is in Ohio County. Wheeling Twp. is in Belmont County, OH. 1 CONC West Wheeling is also in Belmont. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to the Family History Center records, there are four other 1 CONC marriage listings for this family in Belmont County, OH: 1 CONT Loury, Elizabeth married Edward Anthill on 7/5/1830 1 CONT Lowery, James (no twp. listed) married Sarah Hall on 3/24/1831 1 CONT Lowrey, Catherine (who was from Union Twp.) married George Hart on 1 CONC 12/26/1832 1 CONT Lowry, Lucy Ann married William Basser on 2/18/1841 1 CONT Lowry, Sarah Jane married George Brooke on 11/24/1843 1 CONT Lowry, Sarah Jane married Robert Irwin on 3/15/1852 1 CONT These individuals might be Frederick's children or part of an extended 1 CONC family who chose to go with him to Ohio. 1 CONT The 1830 Ohio Census lists a Frederick Lowry in Belmont county, 1 CONC Warren Twp.: 1 CONT 0 males under 5 years 1 CONT 3 males 5-under 10 1 CONT 2 males 10-under 15 1 CONT 1 male 15-under 20 1 CONT 1 male 20-under 30 1 CONT 0 males 30-under 40 1 CONT 1 male 40-under 50 1 CONT 1 CONT 0 females under 5 1 CONT 1 female 5-under 10 1 CONT 1 female 10-under 15 1 CONT 1 female 15-under 20 1 CONT 0 females 20-under 30 1 CONT 1 female 30 - under 40 1 CONT 1 CONT Also listed in in 1830 in the same county and township is a James 1 CONC Lowry who only lists 1 male 15-under 20, probably being James himself. 1 CONC He might have been a younger brother of Frederick's who decided to travel 1 CONC with Frederick and his family. Frederick was 1 CONC in Warren Township. James was also in Warren Twp. There is a John Lowry 1 CONC in Belmont but in Goshen Township, where the city of Belmont is located. 1 CONC There is another James Lowry in Pease Township in Belmont County(His 1829 1 CONC Personal Property Tax for Pease Twp. was 1 Horse for $40, and 1 Cattle 1 CONC for $8, giving a total of $48). However, the John Lowry in Goshen County 1 CONC looks to have bought land there and perhaps even died there; so if he's 1 CONC related, he might be a brother or cousin to Frederick. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1830 Ohio Census shows John Lowry in Goshen Twp, living in the 1 CONC town of Belmont: 1 CONT 1 CONT 1 Male age 20-30 1 CONT 1 Female under the age of 5 1 CONT 1 Female age 20-30 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1831 Personal Property Tax for John Lowry in Goshen Twp., Town 1 CONC of Belmont: Lot 31at total value of $54 and total tax of -/41/3, and Lot 1 CONC 35 at total value of $4 and total tax of -/3/1 1 CONT 1 CONT On May 18, 1832, Frederick married Ann Kinnick in Belmont Co., OH, 1 CONC and their first son was Isaac Lowry. His first wife Elizabeth probably 1 CONC died due to complications of having at least ten children. Ann Kinnick 1 CONC was around the age of 22 at the time of marriage and Frederick was 45. 1 CONC Their marriage license shows that they were both from Warren Township; 1 CONC Ann's last name is spelled "Kinney." 1 CONT To complicate things, the obituary of Walter K. Lowery, son of 1 CONC Frederick and Ann, mentions that he was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, in 1 CONC 1835 and moved to a home near Cadiz, Indiana, in 1837. 1 CONT Frederick's 1832 Belmont County, Warren Twp., Personal Property Tax 1 CONC is as follows: 1 CONT 1 CONT 3 Horses $120 1 CONT 1 Cattle $8 1 CONT 1 Carriage? $28 1 CONT TOTAL $156 1 CONT 1 CONT ITEM $/C(ents)/M 1 CONT 1 CONT State Canal -/54/6 1 CONT County School -/2/9 1 CONT County Poor -/3/9 1 CONT Tax -/15/6 1 CONT TOTAL $1.17 1 CONT So around 1838 Frederick moved his family onto Henry County, 1 CONC Indiana, again establishing himself as an early settler of that area. 1 CONC Why did he keep moving? Most likely, he was trying to get his own farm 1 CONC land for a price he could afford. Indiana had just opened up and had 1 CONC become a state in 1816. As it is reported in the book Indiana History: 1 CONC A Book of Readings, "Following the War of 1812, a wave of settlement 1 CONC swept across the New West like pent-up flood waters bursting through a 1 CONC dam. Indiana's population jumped from 35,000 to 40,000 prior to the war 1 CONC to more than 147,000 in 1820, 685,000 in 1840, and over 1,350,000 in 1 CONC 1860." Frederick was swept along with the tide. 1 CONT By 1838, Frederick's Personal Property Tax for Belmont County, 1 CONC Warren Twp., was $1.42.8 based on total value of goods that equaled $127. 1 CONT The 1840 Ohio Census shows no Lowrys in Belmont County, Ohio. 1 CONC However, the 1840 Indiana Census does list a Frederick Lowry in Henry 1 CONC Co. He accumulated, between his 1 CONC personal and his real estate, over $8,000, not bad for a farmer in those 1 CONC times. His last child Fursey was born in 1854 when Frederick was 65 1 CONC years old. By 1874 Frederick had retired from farming and his son 1 CONC Philander had taken over the farm. From the available information, 1 CONC Frederick sired at least 19 children. It is also possible that the marriage to Nancy Boyce 1 CONC was George's second marriage. 1 CONT According to the Index for Deeds in Frederick County, on August 15, 1 CONC 1821, George Lowry took out a Trust to Lemuel Brent et.al. for the amount 1 CONC of $350. 0 @I005@ INDI 1 NAME James? /Lowery/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1791 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I006@ INDI 1 NAME Alexander? /Lowery/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE BET. 1810 - 1820 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I007@ INDI 1 NAME Catharine /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1794 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I008@ INDI 1 NAME Mary? /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I009@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth? /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1794 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I010@ INDI 1 NAME Polly /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1796 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I011@ INDI 1 NAME Juliet /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1800 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I012@ INDI 1 NAME Margaret /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1804 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I013@ INDI 1 NAME Nancy /Lowery/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT. 1800 1 FAMC @F002@ 0 @I014@ INDI 1 NAME John /Lowery/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F004@ 1 NOTE @NI014@ 0 @NI014@ NOTE 1 CONC BUT WHERE DID THE FAMILY COME FROM? 1 CONT 1 CONT Before we move on, tracing Frederick Lowry through Pennsylvania, Ohio and 1 CONC Indiana, we must ask then who were the parents of the three brothers: 1 CONC Daniel(100), John(101), and Frederick(102). At this time no substantial 1 CONC information has been found to make any viable connections to their 1 CONC parents. However, in the early 1700s when the boys were bound out, only 1 CONC two other Lowry's were in Fauquier county. 1 CONT 1 CONT JOHN LOWRY 1 CONT There are not many mentions of John Lowry who first appeared in the 1 CONC Fauquier County Records in 1770. Before 1770, since Fauquier County was 1 CONC formed in 1759, there is no mention of him. On June 23, 1770, John Lowry 1 CONC married Mary Inglis, the bondsmen being John Lowry and George Turberville 1 CONC Kenner. Unlike a majority of the early family members, John Lowry could 1 CONC write his name, quite grandly in fact, showing that he was an educated 1 CONC man. Mary Inglis's consent stated that both she and John Lowry lived in 1 CONC the Parish of Hamilton and County of Fauquier. However, there is no 1 CONC listed record of John Lowry's presence before this marriage. The timing 1 CONC would make sense seeing how Daniel and John were bound out in 1772 and 1 CONC Frederick in 1773. What happened? Perhaps the family was poor and could 1 CONC not take care of the children. Or maybe John Lowry abandoned them or 1 CONC perhaps went to fight in the war and did not return. 1 CONT From the Fauquier County Court Books, on October 24, 1770, there is 1 CONC a judgement: "On the motion of John LOWRY it is ordered that George 1 CONC Turberville Kenner pay him one hundred pounds of Tobacco for four days 1 CONC attendance as a witness for him against Michael Marr and Mary his wife." 1 CONC Coincidentally, a juror on that same case was named GEORGE LOWRY. In 1 CONC 1770 George Turberville Kenner was listed with 180 acres in the Rent 1 CONC Roll; most likely, Kenner was a tobacco farmer, as his father was before 1 CONC him, inheriting the land from his father. In the Fauquier County 1759 1 CONC Tax Roll, George Turbeville Kenner was listed with two slaves. 1 CONT In the September Court Records of 1771, there is listed: 1 CONT "John James, Plt., ag. Mary LOWRY and George Turberville Kenner, 1 CONC Def. and that judgment is granted the Plt. against the said Def. Kenner 1 CONC for 5 pounds and his costs by him in this behalf expended of the petition 1 CONC abates against the Def. LOWRY the sheriff having returned that she is no 1 CONC inhabitant of this county." Is this the same Mary Inglis who married 1 CONC John Lowry? If so, then why is Kenner paying for her and not John Lowry? 1 CONC If she isn't an inhabitant of this county, then where? 1 CONT The Kenner family had roots in Stafford County, next door to 1 CONC Fauquier County. (But the location of their graveyard is in Fauquier 1 CONC County, close to where Daniel lived). However, many records of Stafford 1 CONC County were lost. Stafford county came out of King George county. There 1 CONC is an interesting list from Saint Paul's Parish, King George County, 1 CONC 1715-1798 of births, marriages and deaths. We see that some of the 1 CONC families included in this registry are the LOWRY, the EMBRY, and the 1 CONC INGLIS/ENGLISH/ENGLES/INGLES. Of course, Daniel Lowry eventually married 1 CONC Ann Embry, and John Lowry married Mary Inglis. 1 CONT In short, this John Lowry, who mysteriously appeared in Faquier 1 CONC County in 1770, may have roots in Stafford and/or King George Counties. 1 CONC We see from the Saint Paul's Parish Register: 1 CONT 1 CONT Married: John Lowry and Elizabeth Seaton 4/23/1726 1 CONT Married: Sarah Lowry and Moses Hubbard 3/23/1726-7 1 CONT Died: Elizabeth Lowry 3/25/1733 1 CONT 1 CONT But then the listing stops after this for the Lowry family. The records 1 CONC for Stafford County are scarce since most of them were lost in two major 1 CONC fires and in the carnage of the Civil War. 1 CONT John Lowry seemed to have been an educated man, given the bold 1 CONC signature on the marriage license. His education was uncommon for a 1 CONC large majority of the Virginians at this time, and it may indicate that 1 CONC he perhaps came from a family with some money. Whether that family was 1 CONC already here in the country or John Lowry recently stepped off a boat is 1 CONC still unknown. His close relationship with George Turbeville Kenner, who 1 CONC was from a rather prestigious family in Virginia, may indicate that he 1 CONC was a friend of the family or perhaps just an educated tenant farmer. 1 CONT From the Fauquier County Minute book of May 1773, there is a 1 CONC petition: 1 CONT 1 CONT Martin Pickett and Company Plt. 1 CONT ag. 1 CONT Catherine Lowry Def. 1 CONT This petition abates that the Sheriff having returned that the Def. 1 CONC is no Inhabitant of this county. 1 CONT 1 CONT Martin Pickett, at this time, was the local sheriff. Where 1 CONC Catherine Lowry came from is unknown. Did she come from another county 1 CONC or was she fresh off the boat? Most likely, she is somehow related to 1 CONC John Lowry. 1 CONT To summarize: 1 CONT 1 CONT June 1770 John Lowry married Mary Inglis 1 CONT Sept. 1771 Judgement against Mary Lowry which Kenner paid 1 CONT May 1772 Daniel and John bound out 1 CONT May 1773 Judgement against Catherine Lowry 1 CONT Nov. 1773 Frederick bound out 1 CONT 1 CONT The close sequence of these events, especially when the Lowry family 1 CONC name is scarce in other Fauquier County records, may indicate some 1 CONC connection between John Lowry and Daniel(100). Coincidentally, a John 1 CONC Lowry/Loury lived or was in Frederick County around this time -- he 1 CONC witnessed deeds in 1771 and 1772. 1 CONT 1 CONT GEORGE LOWRY 1 CONT At the same time a George Lowry existed in Fauquier county, having come 1 CONC over from Prince William county. He was a man who became a wealthy and 1 CONC highly-placed political person in the county. A good number of records 1 CONC exist on George Lowry. However, at this time, there are no links 1 CONC whatsoever between George and Daniel. If George is related to the John 1 CONC Lowry who married Mary Inglis, perhaps as brothers, again nothing exists 1 CONC to substantiate this linkage. If George were the father of Daniel, John, 1 CONC and Frederick and he bound them out, he never acknowledged them again. 1 CONC He never mentioned them in deed records nor in his will. Neither did his 1 CONC wife although both of them did mention a son named William. Most likely, 1 CONC George Lowry was not related to Daniel and this family. 0 @I015@ INDI 1 NAME Mary /Inglis/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F004@ 1 NOTE @NI015@ 0 @NI015@ NOTE 1 CONC Fauquier County Court Books, October Court, 1768 -- "On the notion of 1 CONC John ENGLISH, it is ordered that John KNOX(?) pay him 550 pounds of 1 CONC tobacco as a witness against Peter Daniel. p.43. 1 CONT 1 CONT Fauquier County Court Books, June Court, 1770 (from Index)--"Grant vs. 1 CONC Inglis. John was at least 6 years old when 1 CONC he and his older brother Daniel were bound out. 1 CONT In the August 26, 1782 Court, it is "Ordered that Joshua Tullos be 1 CONC summoned to appear at the next Court to answer the complaint of John 1 CONC Lowry." He was born 1 CONC in OHIO, he stated, in 1815. He settled in Henry County in 1831. 1 CONC Republican. However, the family members sometimes were 1 CONC confused as to where they were actually born. If he settled in Henry 1 CONC County in 1831, this is seven years earlier than when his father 1 CONC Frederick came to the county (1838). Some listings have his place of 1 CONC birth in Belmont County, Ohio, across the state line from Wheeling, West 1 CONC Virginia, although at that time West Virginia did not exist as a state. 1 CONC We can see from the birthplaces of other family members at this time that 1 CONC many list their birthplaces at Ohio. Henry's discharge from the union 1 CONC army stated that he was born in Belmont County in Ohio. 1 CONT From the 1850 Indiana Census, Henry was 19 years old, working as a 1 CONC Laborer, and still living in his father's house. 1 CONT On March 4, 1853, he married Olive Crawford, a woman who always 1 CONC claimed to be younger than what she was. She claimed to have been born 1 CONC in 1825 in Henry County but other records seem to indicate she was 1 CONC actually born in 1814, making her almost 15 years older than Henry. If 1 CONC Olive was born in 1814 then when they married, Henry was around the age 1 CONC of 23 and Olive was already 38. The problem is that Olive was so 1 CONC inconsistent with her date of birth, it is hard to know her exact age. 1 CONT Olive gave birth to their son William H.in 1854. Over the next five 1 CONC years she gave birth, up to 1860, to Sarah, John, and Truman. 1 CONT According to the 1860 Indiana Census, the family was living in the 1 CONC city of Cadiz in Harrison Twp. Henry, head of household, was 30 and his 1 CONC occupation was Journeyman Shoemaker. He was probably learning this trade 1 CONC from his brother John, Frederick's first son, who also listed his trade 1 CONC as shoemaker. It is interesting to note that Daniel Lowry (100) had 1 CONC shoemaker's tools at his estate sale; perhaps this skill was somehow 1 CONC passed down in the family. The value of Henry's Personal Estate was 1 CONC $25. He was listed as illiterate. His place of birth was OH. Also 1 CONC listed in the household were Olive (age 35, also illiterate), William 1 CONC (age 7), Sarah (age 5), Francis (age 3)and John (age 2). Also listed was 1 CONC Harriet Crawford (age 17, born in OH) who was listed as their servant and 1 CONC was probably some relation to Olive. 1 CONT The Civil War then made an impact upon the family. Henry, along 1 CONC with several others, volunteered for service. He enlisted on August 26, 1 CONC 1861 at New Castle and was mustered, at Richmond, Indiana, into the 36th 1 CONC Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Company C, on September 16, 1861 as a 1 CONC Wagoneer. He was supposed to serve a term of three years. He saw action, 1 CONC including the bloody battle at Shiloh, where 13,000 out of 70,000 Union 1 CONC Soldiers were killed. The unit was ordered to Kentucky and duty at Camp 1 CONC Wickliff, KY. 1 CONT George Hazzard, who wrote the two-volume book Hazzard's History of 1 CONC Henry County, served with Henry Lowery in this unit. As Hazzard wrote: 1 CONT 1 CONT Very soon after it [the unit] was mustered into the 1 CONC service it was ordered to the field, and was sent to Kentucky and 1 CONC marched with the Army of the Ohio until it reached Nashville, 1 CONC Tennessee. In the latter part of February, 1862, when the advance 1 CONC on the Tennessee River began, this regiment went with General 1 CONC Buell's Army, and marched to the battlefield of Shiloh in time to 1 CONC take an active part in that great battle [April 6-7, 1862]. 1 CONC After the battle of Shiloh it camped upon the battlefield 1 CONC until the advance upon Corinth, Mississippi. It took an active 1 CONC part in the siege of Corinth[April 30- May 30, 1862], and after the 1 CONC evacuation of that place it moved eastward through Northern 1 CONC Alabama with Buell's Army to Nashville. When that army fell 1 CONC back to Louisville this regiment marched with it, reaching that 1 CONC city early in October, 1862, and took part in the 1 CONC pursuit of General Bragg through Kentucky, and was with Buell 1 CONC until Bragg was driven from Kentucky[October 1-20, 1862, battle 1 CONC of Wild Cat, KY], when it returned to Nashville with General 1 CONC Rosecrans' Army and went into camp. 1 CONT 1 CONT Henry Lowery never made it further than that. He was discharged on 1 CONC December 19, 1862 for a disability caused by exposure while on Scout 1 CONC duty. His description at the discharge: age 33, 5 feet 11" tall, dark 1 CONC complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, a shoe-maker. As his Declaration of 1 CONC Invalid Army Pension stated "he was taken sick of disease of the lungs 1 CONC called Phthsisi Pulmonalis and Chronic Rheumatism . . . " which 1 CONC involved, as the Examining Surgeon's Certificate stated, "Cough, 1 CONC Expectoration of Pus, night sweats, short respiration, inability [to] 1 CONC take a long breath, ???, pains and ?? in the back and shoulders, 1 CONC irregular appetite." The term Phthisis is an old term for any wasting 1 CONC disease, especially tuberculosis. Henry was moved to Nelson's Barracks, 1 CONC then to Bardstown Barracks, and then to the Soldier's Home in 1 CONC Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was given an honorable discharge. He 1 CONC then applied for his Invalid Army Pension on October 21, 1863, since his 1 CONC occupation after his discharge was "Nothing, not having been able to 1 CONC perform any kind of labor, but . . . wholly disabled." He died from the 1 CONC worsening disease on April 4, 1864 at home in Cadiz, Indiana. On August 1 CONC 23, 1864, Olive applied for a Widow's Army Pension because she had to 1 CONC support all her minor children who lived with her. When she applied for 1 CONC this pension, she listed her age as 50. Henry was only 34. 1 CONT On January 1, 1867, Olive applied for the Increase of Pensions of 1 CONC Widows and Orphans. A letter of January 1, 1867 from her attorney gives 1 CONC some more information about the family. It stated that her daughter 1 CONC Sarah L. was now dead. It also described who attended the births of her 1 CONC children. For William, it was Dr. John ?? of New Castle; for Sarah, Dr. 1 CONC Luther W. Hess of Cadiz; for Truman, Dr. William E. Millikan; and for 1 CONC John C.F., her daughter was the only person in attendance. If this 1 CONC information is correct, Sarah would have only been three years old at 1 CONC this time. 1 CONT The 1870 Indiana Census from Harrison Twp, Henry County listed Olive 1 CONC Lowery as head of the household. Her age was 53, birthplace was IN, her 1 CONC occupation was "Keeping House," and she was illiterate. The value of the 1 CONC Real Estate was $450 and the Personal Estate was $439. Also listed in 1 CONC the household was William H.(age 14, Farm Hand), Sara L. (age 15, House 1 CONC Keeping), John C.F.(age 12, At Home) and Truman(age 10). All born in IN 1 CONC and all listed as illiterate. William and John had attended school 1 CONC within the last year. 1 CONT Now this 1870 census information is curious. Olive listed her age 1 CONC as 53 while in 1864 she listed it at 50. William, who was born in 1854, 1 CONC is listed as only being 14, but the rest of the children's ages are 1 CONC correct. And, most surprisingly, Sarah was alive and well in 1870, 1 CONC having "risen from the dead." Perhaps Olived told them that Sarah died 1 CONC to gain their sympathy. Also Francis, who was mentioned in the 1860 1 CONC Census, was never mentioned again, probably dying before 1864. 1 CONT Also in regards to Sarah L., there is a marriage certificate stating 1 CONC that she married Joseph Redding on April 27, 1875. Whether this is the 1 CONC same Sarah L., the daughter of Henry and Olive, is not positively known. 1 CONC What happened to her brother John C.F. is unknown. 1 CONT Olive was located twice in the 1880 Indiana Census, under the names 1 CONC of Ollie LOWERY and Ollie LOWARY. She listed her age as 57, her 1 CONC birthplace as Indiana, and currently lived in the city of Cadiz, Harrison 1 CONC Twp. In the house with her were Sarah, age 26; John, age 23; Truman, age 1 CONC 19, and a grandson Oris(Otis?), age 6. Oris was probably the child of 1 CONC Sarah. Both Truman and John were single and Laborers. Olive listed 1 CONC herself as "Widow" and her occupation as "Keeping House." Truman had 1 CONC attended school within the year. 1 CONT A plat map of the Rerick Brothers, possible date of 1893, shows the 1 CONC town of Cadiz. At the intersection of Mill Street and Newcastle Road, 1 CONC almost in the center of town, is a building marked O.Lowry. If Olive 1 CONC didn't die until around 1897, this could possibly be the place where she 1 CONC lived. 1 CONT An accompanying letter with Henry's discharge papers, from the 1 CONC Veterans Administration, dated November 19, 1938, stated that Date of 1 CONC death of Widow (Olive) not shown, but reimbursement for funeral expenses 1 CONC was paid May 12, 1897. 1 CONT Henry Lowery was buried in the Hess Cemetery, Harrison Twp. As early as the plat map of 1 CONC 1857, Frank had a good deal of farming land, 60 acres, next to the 100 1 CONC acres of his father Amyers Rhoton. By 1880, Frank was left with his son 1 CONC Lawrence(age 17), another son Lucius/Leavis?(age 16), Henryette, (a 1 CONC daughter aged 11), Hendricks (a son, age 7), and Maud(a daughter, age 1 CONC 5). Clearly, he needed a mother for his children, especially since he 1 CONC was a busy and prosperous farmer. Then Anna's husband passed away and 1 CONC Franklin proposed. Anna's son, William A., was seven years old and 1 CONC probably did not know his father due to William H.'s early death. Grace 1 CONC Lowery also mentioned that William A. had two half brothers named 1 CONC Rhoton. Anna L. gave birth to one of them, Frank Rhoton, on May 14, 1 CONC 1886. It appears that Anna gave birth to another male child, name 1 CONC unknown, on Dec. 26, 1887. Anna died in 1891 when William A. was 14-15 1 CONC years old, again, not having spent much time with his mother. 1 CONT A biographical sketch of Anna's brother James M. Miller, published 1 CONC in Portrait and Biographical Record of Madison and Hamilton Counties, 1 CONC Indiana 1893, tells a bit about the Miller family: 1 CONT [James M. Miller] was born Oct. 22, 1855 . . .[and] his 1 CONC father, Jospeh Miller, a native of the sunny south and 1 CONC born in N.C., there received his early training and education and 1 CONC later emigrated to the far-off state of IN, and one of the 1 CONC early pioneers of 1826 . . . . The father, who combined the 1 CONC dual occupations of a blacksmith and farmer, was also a local 1 CONC preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church. . . . . his death 1 CONC was sincerely mourned when in the year 1872 he entered into 1 CONC rest. the mother Sara (Howard) Miller, was the daughter of 1 CONC Joseph Howard of KY. A letter of January 1, 1867 from her attorney gives some 1 CONC more information about the family. It stated that her daughter Sarah L. 1 CONC was now dead. Also Francis, who was mentioned in the 1860 1 CONC Census, was never mentioned again, probably dying before 1864. 1 CONT Also in regards to Sarah L., there is a marriage certificate stating 1 CONC that she married Joseph Redding on April 27, 1875. His father is still a resident of the county. They 1 CONC had a family of six children; two died in infancy. The four living are 1 CONC -- John H., Biddy I., Malinda, and Christiana. John H. was reared and 1 CONC educated in his native county and on arriving at maturity engaged in 1 CONC agricultural pursuits. He now owns a good farm of sixty-five acres. He 1 CONC was married in August, 1868, to Rebecca C. Bond, daughter of J. and 1 CONC Elmira bond, who died leaving no children. He afterward married Angeline 1 CONC G. Three years ago he was renewed 1 CONC and on the 30th day of September 1900 was baptised, always believing in 1 CONC water baptism. For six years he had been a constant sufferer and hoping 1 CONC to find relief, five weeks ago he went to the sanitarium. Having ?? to 1 CONC hear from him, his family became so anxious that his daughter went and 1 CONC spent the last two weeks with him but all that medical skill and loyal?? 1 CONC hands could do, death claimed him. The attendants at different times 1 CONC read the scriptures and prayed with him. He heartily responded to the 1 CONC prayers and prayed himself.
