This presents to the researcher valuable clues to 1 CONC the 1 CONT names of many pioneering Quaker families residing in New York State. 1 CONT 1 CONT Part One, Travel into New England: 1 CONT 1 CONT ...I was born in the town of Exeter, Rhode Island, the 8th of the 6th 1 CONC month, 1 CONT 1744, of honest parents, Samuel and Dinah Hall, who were members of the 1 CONT Society of Friends...About 1752 my father sold his farm, and moved into 1 CONT Dutchess County, in the State of New York...About the beginning of the 1 CONT commotions in 1756, my father sold his farm, and moved to a place called 1 CONT Oswego...At my twenty-fourth year...I was married to Anne Hoxie, daughter 1 CONC of 1 CONT Zebulon and Sarah Hoxie of Oswego...Thus we were joined in marriage in 1 CONT Friends' meeting held at Oswego, the 26th of the 1st month, 1769...After 1 CONC some 1 CONT months we went to keeping house in a new log house that I had built for 1 CONC that 1 CONT purpose on my father's land, expecting to settle there for life...After 1 CONC some 1 CONT time, I resolved to go to Saratoga, a new settlement in Albany County. So 1 CONC in 1 CONT the fall of the year, I think in 1773, with the advice of some of my 1 CONC friends, 1 CONT I went to Saratoga, and bought a farm I now live on which is now 1 CONC Easton...It 1 CONT happened about the time I bought there, that several Friends from 1 CONC Nuntucket 1 CONT and Dartmouth came and bought also, so that about the time I moved with my 1 CONT family, there were about seven families that were members of the Society, 1 CONC and 1 CONT Providence so ordered it that we soon had a meeting amongst us, which was 1 CONC held 1 CONT at the house of Zebulon Hoxie, my brother-in-law. I got here with my 1 CONC family 1 CONT the 26th of the 1st month, 1775...In the 5th month, my father and mother, 1 CONT sister and brother, moved here also, into my house...Then we built a log 1 CONT meeting house, and the meeting increased fast by Friends moving from other 1 CONT parts...In the year 1777, the war increased to a great degree...This was 1 CONC the 1 CONT beginning of wheat harvest. Then did confusion appear in almost every 1 CONC face; 1 CONT and what made it more so, was that General Burgoyne had many hundreds of 1 CONC the 1 CONT Indian natives, which struck dread on the people in every place, and they 1 CONT prepared to flee as fast as possible, so that within four or five days 1 CONC after 1 CONT the army to the northward came within thirty miles of us, the people in 1 CONC our 1 CONT quarter were mostly gone...Burgoyne was beaten but...although the war did 1 CONC end 1 CONT till some years after yet it did not rise to any great height afterwards 1 CONC in 1 CONT these parts. 1 CONT 1 CONT The last part of his diary reads: 1 CONT 1 CONT "During the spring and forepart of the summer of 1814, I was much unwell 1 CONC to 1 CONT bodily health. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 13th of the 1st month, 1815, I still continued in a weakly state of 1 CONT health...I continued in feeble health until about the 1st of the 5th 1 CONC month, 1 CONT when I began to mend, and by the 14th was so well as to be able to set out 1 CONT from home. I attended Mayfield meeting, and in the afternoon, in company 1 CONC with 1 CONT David Gardner and Abraham Cole, rode in a wagon about sixteen miles to 1 CONC John 1 CONT Hoxie's at Galway. In the evening I found I had taken a very heavy cold, 1 CONC and 1 CONT my old disorder, the gravel, I got so much better in health and strength 1 CONC of 1 CONT body, that I got out to our meetings frequently, though in the 1 CONC seventy-second 1 CONT year of my age. On the bottom 1 CONC of the scroll was written, "To Joseph Durham, from Rosalinda Braymer 1 CONC Durham, Christmas 1911". The scroll was later discovered to have 1 CONC originated from the book "Hudson - Mohawk Genealogical and Family 1 CONC Memoirs" by Cuyler Reynolds, N.Y., 1911, Vol. IV, page 1713: 1 CONT 1 CONT "Richard Durham, son of Durfee and Anna Ann (Hall) Durham, was born May 1 CONC 6, at Easton, Washington Co., New York, died December 9, 1901. He 1 CONC enlisted in Company A, One Hundred and Twenty-third Regiment, New York 1 CONC State Volunteers, from Greenwich and Easton. This regiment was enlisted 1 CONC in Washington County, New York, in August 1862, mustered into the United 1 CONC States service, September 4, 1862, joined the Army of the Potomac. It 1 CONC was engaged in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in May and 1 CONC July, 1863; was transferred to the 1 CONT Army of the Cumberland, was engaged at the campaign of the Carolinas, and 1 CONC mustered out at Washington, D.C. at the close of the war, June 8, 1865. 1 CONC Its first camping ground was Capitol Hill, Washington, where it remained 1 CONC until September 17, drilling, equipping, and performing camp guard duty; 1 CONC it next went to Arlington Heights, where it drilled until September 29, 1 CONC and from there 1 CONT pitched camp in Pleasant Valley. Here, the regiment was assigned to the 1 CONC Second Brigade (Brigadier-General Thomas C. Kane), First Division 1 CONC (Brigadier-General A.S. Williams), Twelfth Corps (Major-General H.W. 1 CONC Slocum). The regiment went into camp in Loudon Valley during the months 1 CONC of November and December, 1862, and was thoroughly drilled; on January 1 CONC 24, 1863, the regiment went into camp at Stafford Court House to remain 1 CONC for the winter. On the morning of April 27, 1863, orders came to pack up 1 CONC and move on the thirtieth; it struck the Fredericksburg plank road, and 1 CONC here was ordered to silence a battery worked by rebel calvarymen, which 1 CONC they did this was the first time the boys had been under fire. It was the 1 CONC beginning of the Chancellorsville battle. On May 3, 1863, the battle 1 CONC commenced and raged with great fury for more than four long 1 CONT hours, and finally ended in repulse (although the boys fought like 1 CONC Spartans) and were ordered back behind their breastworks, where many of 1 CONC their brave comrades lay dead and many were wounded; this ended the 1 CONC battle, with one hundred and thirty-five killed, wounded, and missing. 1 CONT 1 CONT The following is an account of the battle of Gettysburg: July 1, 1863, 1 CONC the regiment struck the road leading to Gettysburg; news came from the 1 CONC front that our forces were engaging the rebels near Gettysburg, near 1 CONC Spangle Springsl they threw up breastworks; making works that would stand 1 CONC a shell; on July 3, at 1 o'clock p.m. the enemy opened fire with one 1 CONC hundred and fifty guns on the 1 CONT center and left, the position of General Hancock's corps; the Union 1 CONC batteries, equal in number and calibre, replied promptly, and for the 1 CONC following two hours the earth shook and trembled under the feet of the 1 CONC two armies with the terrible concussion; the air was filled with iron 1 CONC missiles; forest trees were riven and torn and splintered as if struck by 1 CONC lightning; shells fell thick and 1 CONT fast around the regiment, three hundred pieces of artillery were in 1 CONC action, and such a terrific roar was never heard before and probably 1 CONC never will be heard again. Another sharp fight occurred later in the 1 CONC afternoon, driving the rebels back with great slaughter; this ended the 1 CONC terrible Gettysburg battles. On July 4th large details were made to bury 1 CONC the dead, and this duty occupied the entire day. The corps to which the 1 CONC regiment belonged buried that day fifteen hundred dead rebels; the dead 1 CONC lay in every imaginable shape. On Cemetery Hill and in the National 1 CONC Cemetery now sleep the brave boys who fell at Gettysburg; here repose the 1 CONC precious offerings laid upon the altar of the country by the loyal 1 CONC states; there they lie, those of rank and file "Unknown"! "Unknown"! the 1 CONC only epitaph of hundreds. Eight hundred and sixty-seven dead 1 CONT sons was the sacrifice which New York gave at this battle; the One 1 CONC Hundred and Twenty-third Regiment lost twelve in killed and wounded. New 1 CONC York furnished four hundred and forty-eight thousand eight hundred and 1 CONC fifty men to repress the rebellion; ninety-two separate commands were 1 CONC engaged in this battle. 1 CONT 1 CONT Richard Durham, as corporal, participated in the battle of 1 CONC Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863; battle of Gettysburg, July 3, 1863. He was 1 CONC also engaged under General Sherman in Georgia as follows: Battle of 1 CONC Resaca, Georgia, May 15, 1864, with eight men killed and wounded; battle 1 CONC of Cassville, May 19, 1864. the regiment gaining in this battle without 1 CONC loss of life and took ossession of Cassville, the enemy falling back; 1 CONC battle of Dallas, or New Hope Church, May 25, 1864, killed and wounded in 1 CONC this division nine hundred and fifty men; battle of Culp's Farm, June 22, 1 CONC 1864, in this fight the regiment losing forty-eight men killed and 1 CONC wounded and missing, while only eighty-three men were lost in the entire 1 CONC brigade; after the battle the boys buried their 1 CONT comrades, burying them in their army blue where they fell fighting the 1 CONC foe. The boys were thoroughly exhausted by the incessant marching, 1 CONC exposure, and privation of a fifty-nine days campaign. Corporal Richard 1 CONC Durham was taken prisoner at the latter-named battle, was confined in 1 CONC Andersonville prison, and was prisoner of war until the close of 1 CONC hostilities, June 8, 1865. He made several attempts to escape, but was 1 CONC each time recaptured; on his way to prison 1 CONT he jumped from a moving train, shots were fired after him, missing their 1 CONC mark; he ran into the woods, bloodhounds were put on his track, which 1 CONC chased him up a tree, and at the point of bayonets he surrendered; he 1 CONC escaped again, living on berries and persimmons for four days, at the 1 CONC expiration of which time nature gave out; he then went to a southern home 1 CONC for food and gave himself up. Another time he managed to secure a rebel 1 CONC suit, and went into their camp, but 1 CONT when roll call came was unable to give a rebel name and was arrested for 1 CONC a spy and sentenced to be shot, when a hasty call came for more men, and 1 CONC for some reason, which he never learned, his life was spared, and he was 1 CONC made a prisoner again. He made two other unsuccessful attempts, after 1 CONC which he concluded it was impossible to reach the Union army. 1 CONT 1 CONT Andersonville Prison, Georgia, was one of the worst during the Civil War. 1 CONC A brute named Wirz, the keeper, will go down in history for his 1 CONC inhumanity to the men; he placed the slop houses over the little stream 1 CONC of water running through the stockade, polluting the water used for all 1 CONC purposes. While Corporal Durham was confined there, after a hard shower 1 CONC one night, a pure flow of water burst forth from a rise of ground within 1 CONC the stockade; the prisoners named it "Providential Spring", and spoke of 1 CONC it with great reverence. Who will say this was not the work of a kind 1 CONC heavenly Father to place pure water within reach of the famishing 1 CONC prisoners, making it impossible for the cruel Wirz to pollute; it was 1 CONC still flowing at the close of the war. In this prison pen many of our 1 CONC noble boys were laid to rest through exposure, starvation, and the dread 1 CONC disease, scurvy, with the added brutalities of Captain Wirz, the Swiss 1 CONC keeper, who showed a fiendish delight in adding to the tortures of those 1 CONC committed to his care, and who richly merited being tried and sentenced 1 CONC to the hanging which he suffered, November 10, 1865. He was the only 1 CONC person executed for the part he took in the war. 1 CONT 1 CONT At the close of the war, Corporal Richard Durham returned to his father's 1 CONC home in North Hebron, Washington Co., New York, and remained there until 1 CONC March 12, 1868, the date of his marriage to Rosalinda, daughter of Daniel 1 CONC and Lucina (Woodard) Braymer. The following eleven years he engaged in 1 CONC farming in Hebron, New York, then removed to Salem, Washington County, 1 CONC where he engaged in the feed business for three years. He then went west 1 CONC and entered into partnership 1 CONT with Daniel Braymer, his brother-in-law, in the ranch and cattle business 1 CONC in New Mexico, continuing for ten years. He then returned to Hebron, New 1 CONC York, and engaged in the general grocery business in Granville, 1 CONC continuing for seven years. He was a man of sterling worth, honorable and 1 CONC upright in all his dealings, charitable and kind hearted, giving 1 CONC liberally to all good works. He was a member of the First Baptist Church 1 CONC of Granville, and was a Republican in 1 CONT politics. He served as captain on the round-ups in New Mexico, and as 1 CONC assessor and supervisor for two terms in the town of Hebron. He was a 1 CONC member of the Free and Accepted Masons.
