JOHN'S CEMETERY, ADAIR, IOWA 1 NOTE The July 27, 1893 issue of the "GUTHRIAN" published in Guthrie 2 CONT Center, Iowa contained the following obituary for John Flynn: 2 CONT "FLYNN, John, died Tuesday (July 25,) being over 100 years old. 2 CONT He was born at Strokestown in County Roscommon, Ireland on 13, 2 CONT August somewhere near the year of 1786 and 1789. In his early 2 CONT years he supported his widowed mother and after her death was 2 CONT married to Miss Sabina Dailey. She died 13 years ago, age 80 2 CONT years. They had 10 children - all preceeded the parents in 2 CONT death except Michael and Festus. Michael and Festus reside in 2 CONT Adair County, Iowa. In 1840 he immigrated to America with his 2 CONT family residing at Lakeville, Connecticut, coming to Iowa 30 2 CONT years ago. Burial at the Catholic Cemetery, Adair, Adair Co., 2 CONT Iowa." 2 CONT NOTE: Guthrie County Genealogical Society has cemetery records 2 CONT for St. Johns's Cemetery, Adair. John Flynn's headstone has 2 CONT dates 1799-1895 which do not agree with the foregoing information 2 CONT in the obituary. Further, no mention is made of Luke Flynn, who 2 CONT settled in Wisconsin and is considered as the oldest known son 2 CONT John Flynn. 2 CONT As of January, 1996, we have not found a 1850 census record of John 2 CONT Flynn or any of his family residing in Connecticut, or for that 2 CONT matter, New York, however. we believe John, Sabina and possibly son 2 CONT Luke and his family arrived in America between 1847 or 1849. As 2 CONT noted in Luke Flynn's records, his third child was born in Ireland 2 CONT in 1846 while his fourth child was born in America the year of 1850. 2 CONT Further, we do now have a record of sons Festus and Thomas arriving 2 CONT in New York on May 22 1850, (see Festus Flynn message) indicating 2 CONT the Flynn Family must have split up during the Famine while 2 CONT searching for a way to leave Ireland. 2 CONT As to searching for Flynn Family records in Ireland. Strokestown has 2 CONT a county heritage center, located St. John's, Church Street, 2 CONT Strokestown, Roscommon. A brochure indicates this Center is open 2 CONT from May until September, hours 9.30 a.m. 1 p.m.: 2 p.m. 5.30 p.m., 2 CONT Tuesdays to Friday and Bank Holidays. 2 p.m. 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 CONT Sunday, Closed Monday. The Center offers Genealogical research 2 CONT service for people tracing their ancestors - the cost of any is not 2 CONT known, or is it known if the Center would allow one to do his own 2 CONT researching. We know the Church was and is required to maintain 2 CONT sacramental records so it is possible these Center records are 2 CONT Church records. Also one must realize the place of origin or 2 CONT residence of the Flynn Family is cited as Strokestown, however the 2 CONT family probably lived on a farm in the Roscommon County and it could 2 CONT be probable that the record of this family might be found in some 2 CONT other parish's records. They came 2 CONT to America in overcrowded ships, many sick, weak, penniless and most 2 CONT unskilled and the Ports of New York and Boston, Massachusetts were the 2 CONT principal gateways to America. It is probably through the Boston Port 2 CONT the Luke Flynn Family came, arriving in American sometime bwetween 1846 2 CONT and 1850 as determined by the birth date of Luke Flynn's third child, 2 CONT Thomas who was born in Ireland in 1846 while the fourth child, Michael 2 CONT was born in New York win 1850. (Found in 1850 NEW YORK CENSUS and 2 CONT listed under the name FLINN). The Luke Flynn family probably first 2 CONT lived in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, and then about 1855 the 2 CONT family moved to Wisconsin. By what form of transportation was used to 2 CONT travel to Wisconsin is unknown but it is the belief the reason for the 2 CONT move was because (Luke's wife) Margaret Gahagan's family had settled in 2 CONT Wisconsin and the Gahagans urged the Flynns to come and settle in the 2 CONT Sheboygan County area. The State of Wisconsin had entered statehood in 1848, 2 CONT and had a population of 305,391 in 1850 after a large influx of 2 CONT Northern Europeans about 1848, mostly Germans. During the 1850s, 2 CONT the State more than doubled its 1850 population, having 775,881 in 1860. 2 CONT It was during this decade many of the Irish came to Wisconsin, settling 2 CONT in Counties facing Lake Michigan. The 1855 Sheboygan County Census 2 CONT listed the Luke Flynn family as having 5 males and three females, 2 CONT daughter Emily was still living and daughter Anna and son, Martin 2 CONT had not yet arrived. There is no death record for Luke Flynn in either 2 CONT Sheboygan County or the Wisconsin State Offices. The primary source of 2 CONT his death record is in the issue of the "PLYMOUTH REPORTER" newspaper 2 CONT of Feb. 28, 1895 stating only "Mr Flynn, one of Mitchell's oldest 2 CONT residents, died on Wednesday of last week, February 20, 1895 and 2 CONT his remains were laid to rest in Mitchell Cemetery on Friday, 2 CONT February 22, 1895, Father Burke officiating." 2 CONT Luke's grave in St. Michael's Cemetery, Mitchell, is unmarked probably 2 CONT indicating the family was undergoing an economic strain at that period 2 CONT while wife Margaret's grave, who had died in 1892, has a large monumment 2 CONT marking her burial place. 1 FAMS @F2@ 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I4@ INDI 1 NAME MARGARET /GAHAGAN/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE - ___ 1824 2 PLAC IRELAND 1 DEAT 2 DATE - ___ 1892 2 PLAC MITCHELL, SHEBOYGAN CO, WI 1 BURI 2 PLAC ST. The owner 2 CONT today, (1991) is Reilly Skelton, his great-great-grandson. 1 FAMS @F34@ 1 FAMC @F33@ 0 @I99@ INDI 1 NAME NANCY /WARNER/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE - ___ 1940 2 PLAC CASCADE, WISCONSIN 1 FAMS @F34@ 0 @I100@ INDI 1 NAME ROBIN /SKELTON/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 25 OCT 1961 1 FAMC @F34@ 0 @I101@ INDI 1 NAME STACEY /SKELTON/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 5 MAR 1963 2 PLAC MITCHELL, WISCONSIN 1 FAMC @F34@ 0 @I102@ INDI 1 NAME JODY /SKELTON/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 JAN 1966 2 PLAC MITCHELL, WISCONSIN 1 FAMC @F34@ 0 @I103@ INDI 1 NAME KELLEY /SKELTON/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 22 NOV 1968 2 PLAC MITCHELL, WISCONSIN 1 FAMC @F34@ 0 @I104@ INDI 1 NAME BRIDGET /SKELTON/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 MAR 1970 2 PLAC MITCHELL, WISCONSIN 1 FAMC @F34@ 0 @I105@ INDI 1 NAME JOHN /SKELTON/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 27 SEP 1944 2 PLAC MITCHELL, WISCONSIN 1 DEAT 2 DATE 11 OCT 1968 2 PLAC CASCADE, WISCONSIN (AUTO ACCIDENT) 1 FAMS @F35@ 1 FAMC @F33@ 0 @I106@ INDI 1 NAME JANET /YURMANOVICH/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F35@ 0 @I107@ INDI 1 NAME CHRISTINE /SKELTON/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 MAR 1968 1 FAMC @F35@ 0 @I108@ INDI 1 NAME ELIZABETH /O'REILLY/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU ATTENDING HI SCHOOL 1927 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1913 1 FAMC @F10@ 0 @I109@ INDI 1 NAME JOHN /FLYNN/ 1 SEX M 1 OCCU HOUSE PAINTER 1 BIRT 2 DATE - ___ 1877 2 PLAC SHEBOYGAN CO. ROSCOMMON, IRELAND 1 DEAT 2 DATE 23 JAN 1916 2 PLAC STUART, IOWA 1 BURI 2 DATE 26 JAN 1916 2 PLAC ST. JOHN'S CEMETERY, ADAIR COUNTY, IOWA 1 NOTE According to "Guthrie County Iowa Death Records 1 Jan 1916-31 Dec 1920", 2 CONT Festus was living with his brother, Michael in Stuart, Iowa when he died - 2 CONT his body was taken to Adair for burial in St. John's Cemetery. 1 NOTE There appears to be a substantiated record when Festus Flynn immigrated to 2 CONT the U.S.A.(see below) His son William Patrick, had stated that his Father 2 CONT at one time worked "on the Railroad" and as a consequence Festus had lost 2 CONT some fingers in connection with the coupling of some railroad cars and 2 CONT probably was the reason the family left "railroading" and moved to Iowa and 2 CONT farming. If Festus worked "on the Railroad", this was probably in the New 2 CONT York -Connecticut area around Copake and Hudson, New York. The New York 2 CONT Central was was the leading Railroad in that area. 2 CONT (On November 28, 1995, when researching the records of Irish Famine 2 CONT Immigrants to the US at the Yakima Genealogical Society Library, the 2 CONT following record was obtained which might be the date that Festus arrived 2 CONT in America. {X Liverpool via Ship "John Hamilton" destined and arrived New 2 CONT York May 22, 1850 listed Festus Flynn, age 20, Laborer, and brother Thomas, 2 CONT Age 5. -Page 455 Vol. V} It is apparent the Flynn family split up, 2 CONT probably father John and brother Luke familys must have arrived earlier or 2 CONT traveled on different ships and possibly to a different Port of Entry. At 2 CONT that moment in Irish History and the Famine Period chaos must have 2 CONT prevailed. The Flynns might have been lacking funds to travel together or 2 CONT maybe sufficient ship space was not available thus requiring the family 2 CONT members to immigrate on different ships and at different intervals. 2 CONT Sometime between 1856 and 1860 the Festus Flynns moved to Moscow Tp., 2 CONT Muscantine County, Iowa as substantiated by the 1860 Census, p. 595. The 2 CONT Record shows Festus, age 30, Wife Sarah, age 26, Dtr. Elizabeth age 3 yrs, 2 CONT born New York; Dtr. Sabina, age 3 mos,.born in Iowa, and Brother, Michael 2 CONT Flynn, age 23, born in Ireland and listed as railroad laborer. In 1869 the 2 CONT Festus Flynn family moved to Dexter, Dallas County, then in May 1, 1870 2 CONT moved 4 miles North of Guthrie Center, Guthrie County and finally in May 2 CONT 1877 moved to 5 miles North of Adair, Iowa in Grant Tp. In August, 1995, a 2 CONT search of Gutherie County Court House records in Guthrie Center, IA 2 CONT Bk 2-3, Pg 7 Death Records, disclosed that Festus died of Gastric Ulcer & 2 CONT hemmorage fractured hip. Daughter, Mary Josephine Brandt was the informant. 2 CONT However, the big surprise in the Court House record search was to find that 2 CONT Festus was not that uneducated, unskilled famine Irish immigrant one had 2 CONT always believed, rather, it was learned that he was a "wheeler-dealer", or 2 CONT in todays language, an entrepreneur. The Guthrie-Adair County land records 2 CONT revealed he was involved in the buying and selling of many farm and town 2 CONT properties throughout his life. In those days, the 1880s, the horse and 2 CONT buggy days, lacking modern communications, etc., how did he do it? He must 2 CONT of had a good knowledge of land values, interest rates, legal requirements 2 CONT and ways to locate favorable properties to make his successful 2 CONT transactions. So Festus, probably with aid and cooperation from wife 2 CONT Sarah, was really a shrewd and active business man, and a copy of his 2 CONT signature was obtained from these deed records. 1 NOTE OBITUARY OF FESTUS FLYNN 2 CONT ************************ 2 CONT This obituary was received from Catherine Barrett Rossing, Pebble Beach, 2 CONT California, on March 15, 1998. Although there are a some inconsistencies in 2 CONT comparing it with the foregoing narrative material, we are not making 2 CONT any changes or correction. (George Festis Flynn) 1 NOTE "FESTUS FLYNN CALLED AT RIPE OLD AGE-89" 2 CONT Death of Pioneer of Big-4 Section is Sincerely Mourned by a Large Circle of 2 CONT Friends 1 NOTE Festus Flynn, one of the oldest pioneers in Western Iowa, passed away at 2 CONT 3:00 o'clock January 23, 1916 at the home of his brother, in Stuart, Iowa 2 CONT after an illness of about ten days from a fall caused by breaking the 2 CONT socket of his hip bone. Mr. Flynn was one of the best known men in Adair 2 CONT and Guthrie counties, among the old-time settlers. Born in Strokestown; 2 CONT in County Roscommon, Ireland, eighty-nine years ago, he emigrated with 2 CONT his two brothers Michael, now living at Stuart, Iowa and Thomas Flynn, 2 CONT who lost his life in the civil war, to America. He came to Iowa In 1858 2 CONT and had charge of the construction work of the Rock Island. In 1871 he 2 CONT moved on a farm near Guthrie Center, and afterwards had several farms 2 CONT near Adair. He was a prime mover in building many school houses and 2 CONT churches in these localities, giving his children a high school and 2 CONT college education. Mr. Flynn was married at Copke, New York, April 11. 2 CONT sixty-one years ago, to Sarah Houston Barnett, who died a number of 2 CONT years, ago. He leaves six children and a number of grandchildren and 2 CONT great grandchildren to mourn his death. Among them are his daughter, Mrs. 2 CONT W. K. Stevens & Sons, Chicago, apparently taken 2 CONT when Sarah was visiting her sister, Marianna, who had married a 2 CONT Barnard and was living in Chicago. Elizabeth's Wise Flynn's letter 2 CONT tells of son William and her arrival in Great Falls, Montana on Monday, 2 CONT February 20, 1905, after their honey-moon trip from Iowa, and some 2 CONT details about Great Falls. Elizabeth sent her love also to Mary, Tom 2 CONT and children, (the Brandts) and hoped they were all well. She closed 2 CONT her letter by writing: "Dear mother I hope you are real well, it 2 CONT will soon be warm now so you can go out some, hoping to hear from 2 CONT you soon, I will close with love and best wishes. I am your loving 2 CONT daughter. Elizabeth Flynn." The newspaper account was as follows: 2 CONT "The golden wedding anniversary of Mr. & Mrs. Festus Flynn occurred 2 CONT on April 11th, 1906. Inasmuch as the day came during Holy Week it 2 CONT was quietly observed at home, where a sumptuous dinner was served. 2 CONT Many tokens and letters were received from their friends, at home 2 CONT and abroad. Mr. & Mrs. Flynn's children presented them with a purse 2 CONT containing fifty golden coins and an emblem of the fifty years of 2 CONT happy wedded life. They were married in Hudson, N. Y., April 11, 2 CONT 1856. Both are hale and hearty and have for many years resided in 2 CONT our community, where they are highly respected by all that know 2 CONT them." (The Festus Flynns on retirement prior to 1900 had moved 2 CONT from the their farm located in Guthrie County five miles north of 2 CONT Adair into Adair Town, Adair County. 2 CONT NOTE: One can only guess how many of the children attended 2 CONT this anniversary. However there is a possibility that all of the 2 CONT living children were there however no family group picture has been 2 CONT located. It is also probable that married son William Patrick of 2 CONT Great Falls, Montana, and now the father of a four months old baby boy 2 CONT named Joseph, would not have missed this opportunity to be with the 2 CONT family on this occasion even though in those days it required 2 CONT considerable train travel time as well as own family seperation. 2 CONT There does exist a family picture taken on the occasion of Sarah's 2 CONT death in 1912, with Festus surrounded by all his children 2 CONT including Son William Patrick, who was now living in Miles City, 2 CONT Montana. In 1912 all of the other children were living in the Adair 2 CONT area which included daughter Mary Josephine Flynn Brandt, daughter Sara 2 CONT and sons, Thomas and James, while married daughter Sabina Flynn Burke 2 CONT would come from Walnut, IA., a short distance west of Adair. 2 CONT In all probability, Sara Barnett Flynn had no Irish ancestors as her 2 CONT grandfather was German and her grandmother of Welsh ancestry. Her father, 2 CONT Samuel Barnett Jr. married a North Ireland girl, Sarah Houston, who could 2 CONT have been of Scottish descent. The Barnetts call themselves Scotch-Irish. 2 CONT It is likely that when Sarah Barnett married Festus Flynn she was non- 2 CONT Catholic and this is seemingly confirmed by Rosalie Barnard's letter 2 CONT of March 27, 1976, (she was a Barnett descendent), when she wrote; 2 CONT "I support the Presbyterian Faith financially, I seldom attend 2 CONT church!" 2 CONT How Sarah Barnett, who was then living in Copake, NY, met Festus 2 CONT Flynn, a survivor of the Ireland Potato Famine, is a mystery. In 2 CONT 1840 and the 50s, the Irish immigrants to America represented the 2 CONT bottom of the social scale. They came as poor, unskilled people with 2 CONT limited education, and in addition, most were Roman Catholics and 2 CONT many of them (unwittingly) settled in New England Area - the bastion 2 CONT of American Protestantism. Festus Flynn, along with is parents, 2 CONT brother and sisters were good representatives of this Irish 2 CONT immigrant group and his first work in America was the menial job of 2 CONT a railroad section laborer. Unquestionably, Festus' courtship of 2 CONT Sarah created much opposition and discord in the Barnett family - 2 CONT not only would Sarah's marriage be to an inferior, "a shanty 2 CONT Irishman", or one below her status, she would also be exposed to 2 CONT Catholicism. Family opposition aside, Sarah did marry Festus and 2 CONT embraced the Catholic Faith. When and why she became a Catholic 2 CONT is unknown but we do know she became a zealous adherent of the 2 CONT sacrements and practices of her new Faith. She was a strong willed, 2 CONT an energetic individual and was determined to help her husband, 2 CONT Festus, find his place in America and to raise her children to be 2 CONT contributing citizens to society. In all probability, Sarah could 2 CONT have initiated the idea for the family to move (1858-59?) from New 2 CONT York to Iowa where there should be more opportunity for achievement 2 CONT in the newer developing area. By her inspiration and motivation 2 CONT she guided her children into securing the maximum benefits from 2 CONT their local educational facilities. In the course of time, five of 2 CONT her children became teachers, her four daughters were active 2 CONT citizens in their areas of endeavor. Son William, obtained advanced 2 CONT college degrees and became a civil engineer and made major 2 CONT contributions to Montana's geographical history. Son. Thomas, was a 2 CONT prominent citizen of Amarillo, TX. and served as it's police chief, 2 CONT while youngest son, James, was a master plasterer, and operated a 2 CONT successful contracting company in Amarillo. During those busy years 2 CONT when she was raising her family, she invited Festus' elderly 2 CONT parents, John and Sabina, to come from Connecticut and live near 2 CONT them, Sabina died in 1881 while John lived to 105 years of age or to 2 CONT 1893. Sarah also, at times, might have had children of Michael Flynn, 2 CONT Festus' brother, living with them - in other words - there could have been 2 CONT as many as 12 to 14 around the family table at meal time. This was the age 2 CONT when travel was by horse and buggy - their farm home was 5 miles north of 2 CONT Adair IA. - one can easily imagine the flurry of family activity as 2 CONT the growing children were going to and from school, and to other 2 CONT family educational and social affairs. The history of this family 2 CONT certainly indicates that Sarah Houston Barnett Flynn was compelled 2 CONT to make many personal sacrifices for her loved ones. She succeeded 2 CONT in her labors and efforts for the family to overcome the handicaps 2 CONT and obstacles that beset an Irish immigrant family. Today, some 2 CONT four and five generations later, Festus and her descendents can be 2 CONT found in all areas of society as lawyers, teachers, nurses, 2 CONT professors, artist, actors, engineers, dentists, musicians and the 2 CONT other professions and occupations which make up the America 2 CONT community. In the Adair, Iowa's Catholic Cemetery, on a grassy 2 CONT knoll, can be seen the red granite headstones and markers for Sarah, 2 CONT and her loved ones; husband Festus, mother-in-law and father-in-law 2 CONT Sabina and John, and her daughters Nellie, Mary and Sara. FESTIS FLYNN IS CALLED BY DEATH ANGEL" 1 NOTE Aged Lady Succombs to Second Paraletic Stroke - Funeral Held Monday 2 CONT Although advanced in years, and for a week or more in a dangerous 2 CONT condition, the final announcement Friday evening at eight o'clock of the 2 CONT passing away of Mrs. Sara H. Flynn, wife of Festis Flynn of Adair, was 2 CONT received with more than the usual feelings of sorrow and regret. For in 2 CONT life Mrs. Flynn had been so amiable and pleasant in her associations 2 CONT with everyone that she had won a warm place in the hearts or both old and 2 CONT young. Sara H. Flynn was born in Londonderry, Ireland, April 29th, 1834, 2 CONT being the daughter of Samuel Barnett and Sara Huston. When a young lady she 2 CONT came to America with her brother, Jacob, both of whom for a time made 2 CONT their home with another brother, Ogilby Barnett. A third brother, 2 CONT William, remained in Ireland. During the early 50's Miss Huston became 2 CONT acquainted with Festis Flynn and on April 11th, 1855, she became his bride. 2 CONT They moved to Iowa in 1857, and have been residents of Adair and vicinity 2 CONT during the past thirty-six years. 2 CONT To Mr. and Mrs. Flynn have been born eight children, two of whom have 2 CONT passed on to their eternal reward, Nellie, who died in infancy and Elisa 2 CONT Ann Maxwell, who died near Adair in 1897. The six surviving are Mrs. W. 2 CONT F. Burke, of Walnut; Thomas H., of Amorilla, Texas; William P. of Miles 2 CONT City, Mont.; Mrs. Thomas M. Brandt of Adair; Miss Sara of Hot Springs, 2 CONT Ark.; and James Flynn of Morrison, S. Dak.; all of whom were at the 2 CONT bedside of their mother when she passed away. During the year 1903 Mrs. Flynn 2 CONT suffered a stroke or paralysis, and on January 27 of this year suffered the 2 CONT fatal second stroke, which caused her death, as above stated, on February 2d. 2 CONT Mrs. Flynn was member of the Presbyterian church during early life but 2 CONT in 1866 became a Catholic, and continued a faithful member until the 2 CONT summons of the Master was received. Besides her husband and children 2 CONT Mrs. Flynn leaves to mourn her death her sister Mrs. Richard Harnard of 2 CONT Chicago, who was unable to be present at the funereal. Funeral services 2 CONT were conducted from St. John's Church Monday fore-noon at 10 o'clock by 2 CONT Rev. T. J. Mullen. Many beautiful floral offerrings were banked upon the 2 CONT casket attesting the esteem of the people of the entire community. 2 CONT Internment occurred in Sunny Hill cemetery. The choir of St. John's 2 CONT church rendered very beautiful and inspiring music. Mrs. Flynn was a good 2 CONT woman and loved by everyone who knew her. As a neighbor she was always ready 2 CONT wih a kind act or a cheering word, and took a large interest in the life of 2 CONT those about her. She was generous to a fault. Her passing away is particularly 2 CONT a great bereavement to her aged husband, but in his loneliness he will be 2 CONT comforted by the promise of Him who watches over us all. 2 CONT The News deeply sympathizes with Mr. Flynn and the other members of his 2 CONT family as do the people of the whole community. We have appreciated them 2 CONT as neighbors and friends, and as citizens. We shall all miss the 2 CONT familiar and smiling face of Mrs. Flynn whose coming and going has been 2 CONT as a ray of sun-shine to her friends. The Flynn family had 2 CONT previously lived near Guthrie Center then near Dexter, Iowa in 2 CONT 1869 after coming from Moscow Twp in Muscantine County where 2 CONT Thomas was born in 1861. The 1900 Census reveals that Thomas, at 2 CONT age 39, was operating a hotel on Dearborn Street, Adair Town, 2 CONT Adair County and that he had married an Ella M. It is reported that Thomas and wife, Ella 2 CONT at an unknown date moved from Iowa to Oklahoma where Thomas was 2 CONT involved in the oil and cattle business. The next family record is 2 CONT that he and Ella later moved to Amarillo, Texas as Amarillo 2 CONT had become a thriving center for the oil well drilling and production 2 CONT as well as a flourishing cattle growing center. 2 CONT Also another reason for the Thomas Flynn's move to Texas could 2 CONT have been that his sister, Sarah Houston Flynn, had established 2 CONT a regional southwestern office for the A. She was the sixth 2 CONT child and youngest daughter of a farm family of eleven 2 CONT children. If there was a saying "you can take a farm girl out 2 CONT of Iowa, but you can't take the farm out of the girl" surely 2 CONT this would apply to Elizabeth for in many ways throughout her 2 CONT life she relied upon the farm practices and farm family 2 CONT characteristics to live as a wife and mother. 2 CONT In 1800s Iowa farm life in general was one of toil and 2 CONT struggle - the motive power was supplied by horse and human 2 CONT exertion. In German families, all members generally supported 2 CONT the farming functions. The women, children or adults, all had 2 CONT their place in performing the scores of demanding tasks, as 2 CONT births, sicknesses and deaths were all farm home occurances 2 CONT and the children's schooling or formal education was many 2 CONT times limited. Elizabeth's total school attendance was at the 2 CONT 6th grade level. She, however, inherited a strong religious 2 CONT faith which sustained her all her life - the Rosary was her 2 CONT constant companion and always her strength and refuge. 2 CONT In 1892, when she was 20 years of age her parents retired, 2 CONT leaving the farm to the sons, and moved into Avoca, Iowa, 2 CONT Elizabeth and her sister, Gertrude, became the parents's 2 CONT housekeepers. In 1901 Gertrude married, Elizabeth continued 2 CONT on as housekeeper meanwhile took music lessons and became the 2 CONT St. Mary's Church organist. During a music lesson she met 2 CONT William Patrick Flynn, the visiting brother of her music 2 CONT teacher. He, in contrast to her farm life, was a college 2 CONT graduate, with advanced studies and degrees, a world traveler 2 CONT with military, political and engineering experiences. In due 2 CONT time, contradiction aside, the farm girl Elizabeth married 2 CONT William in St. Mary's Church, Avoca, on January ll, 1905 - 2 CONT she was 32 and he was 40 years of age. 2 CONT This couple immediately moved to Montana, an area just 2 CONT emerging from the frontier stage, and finally settled in 2 CONT Miles City, where William became the County Surveyor. To 2 CONT this union nine children were born, six attaining adulthood. 2 CONT The rugged Montana environment and the prolonged field trips 2 CONT and irregular working tasks of a surveyor and civil engineer 2 CONT undoubtedly 2 CONT created some difficult housekeeping and child raising episodes 2 CONT and decisions for Elizabeth. Here, undoubtedly her farm girl 2 CONT training and experiences became her salvation as she weathered 2 CONT the housekeeping chores, the sicknesses episodes while 2 CONT encouraging her children to be working participants in the 2 CONT family group. At age 45, she experienced her first hospital 2 CONT birth for her youngest child, and now raising six children 2 CONT with the oldest age 13. 2 CONT After her children attained adulthood and now some 30 years 2 CONT of marriage, William's health begin to fail, he had an incident 2 CONT of cancer and blood pressure problems, which eventually made 2 CONT him bedridden. Uncomplaining, Elizabeth accepted the role of 2 CONT the nurse as well as housekeeper and cared for William until 2 CONT his death in March, 1947 at age 82 . After William's death, at 2 CONT age 75, Elizabeth sold her home and tried living alone in a 2 CONT Great Fall's, Montana apartment so as to be near her children. 2 CONT Soon thereafter in 1948, Kenneth Smith, the husband of her 2 CONT oldest daughter Clare, secured the position of Dean of Miles 2 CONT City's Community College and would move the family from Cascade, 2 CONT Mt. to Miles City and invited Elizabeth to come and live with 2 CONT them in their newly established home. Back in the home town and 2 CONT among her friends and neighbors of many years, she continued to 2 CONT live and do her share of the family housekeeping until her 2 CONT health failed, passing away in August 1959, at age 87, having 2 CONT lived a full and fruitful life. The family soon thereafter 2 CONT built a new home at 1614 Batchelor St. where Clare lived and grew to 2 CONT adulthood. She attended the Ursuline Academy through elementary and second 2 CONT year of high school. In 1922 she enrolled in Custer County High School as a 2 CONT junior and graduated at age 16 as Salutatorian in 1924. Her parents thought 2 CONT her too young to enter college so her father arranged for her to do 2 CONT secretarial work in his office then later worked as Bill Clerk at the 1925 2 CONT session of the Montana State Legislature in Helena, MT.where her father was 2 CONT State Representative from Custer County. In the Fall of 1925 she enrolled in 2 CONT the University of Montana, Missoula where she was a member of the Alpha Xi 2 CONT Delta Sorority and graduated in 1929 receiving a B.A. in Education. With a 2 CONT Teacher's Certificate, she began teaching at Howard School, situated 12 miles 2 CONT west of Forsyth, Montana. During this period she met Kenneth Smith, coach and 2 CONT high school teacher in Forsyth and they were married in Miles City on August 2 CONT 21, 1933. Subsequently, her two children were born, her daughter, Joanne in 2 CONT 1936 and Kenneth Dale in 1945, while her husband was teacher-coach at Custer 2 CONT County High School, then Principal for Broadus Mt. schools and Principal of 2 CONT Schools, Cascade, Mt. In 1948, the family returned to Miles City when Kenneth 2 CONT was appointed Dean of the Community College, During this period Clare served 2 CONT as a substitute teacher and librarian and in 1949 was appointed Head Librarian 2 CONT for the Miles City Library - during her tenure she promoted the enlargement 2 CONT and modernizing of the library facilities and created the Sagebrush Federation 2 CONT of Libraries - a mobile library service to serve the rural areas of Eastern 2 CONT Montana. 2 CONT When Clare and Kenneth moved from Cascade, MT back to Miles City, they invited 2 CONT Clare's mother, Elizabeth Wise Flynn, now a 76 year old widow, to live with 2 CONT them so that they could provide care for her in a family home. Elizabeth live 2 CONT with them until 1958, a period of 10 years, or until she needed geriatric aid 2 CONT and was placed in Miles City's Holy Rosary Hospital where she lived until her 2 CONT death in August of 1959. 2 CONT Clare retired in 1972 having served the community and library for 22 1/2 2 CONT years. Upon her retirement the community honored her for her outstanding 2 CONT educational contributions and librarianship. Clare and husband, Kenneth, 2 CONT continue to reside in Miles City after retirement, Doing some traveling, such 2 CONT as visiting their children and grandchildren and in the winter spending 2 CONT vacation time in the Scottsdale, Arizona area. During the summers, their 2 CONT principal activities involved golfing and social activities at the Miles City 2 CONT Country Club which was located adjacent to their condominimum home. 2 CONT After husband Kenneth's death in March of 1989, daughter Joanne and son Kenny 2 CONT decided to have Clare live close to Joanne in the Portland, OR area as Clare 2 CONT was now having memory problems and was not able to provide total care for 2 CONT herself. Clare became a resident of the Heritage House in Tulatin, OR., a 2 CONT senior rest home in a suburb just South of Portland and close to Joanne and 2 CONT husband Richard's residence. She resided at that location until March of 1995 2 CONT when she was placed in the Marysville Nursing Home in Beaverton, OR because of 2 CONT the need for total care. GFF 3/95 (Note) Clare's brother George visited her in 2 CONT Maryville Nursing Home on July 10 and 11, 1996 just before her 89th birthday. 2 CONT It was noted that Clare shows a marked decline in her physical condition. She 2 CONT is now confined to a wheel chair, has difficulty in the use of her arms and 2 CONT now must have total care. In Febuary 1997, the Nursing Home reported that 2 CONT Clare now has an eating problem - they still get her up in the day but her 2 CONT memory-mental condition has continue to decline. Her son, Kenny, called 2 CONT his Uncle George and report this situation on Feb 12, 1997. On March 23-24, 1997, 2 CONT brother George visited Clare in the nursing home. He was advised by the nursing 2 CONT home staff that the rejection of food is a symptom of her illness - a form of 2 CONT alzheimers . The Home gets her out of bed twice a day for the wheelchair. She is now 2 CONT non-verbal, eyes closed, no facial expression, sits in a rigid, arms crossed posture 2 CONT and does not respond to conversation. She apparently is not aware of her 2 CONT surroundings. Her coloring and skin condition are good which indicated that her 2 CONT general physical health is good and was not experiencing any pain. 1 NOTE GFF - 3/26/1997 1 FAMS @F128@ 1 FAMC @F102@ 0 @I420@ INDI 1 NAME KENNETH DALE /SMITH/ 1 SEX M 1 OCCU EDUCATOR-COMMUNITY COLEG. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 JUN 1905 2 PLAC LILLY CHAPEL, OHIO 1 DEAT 2 DATE 10 MAR 1989 2 PLAC MILES CITY, MT. He worked 2 CONT in the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho and Washington areas, worked as Commercial 2 CONT Agent in the Washington Columbia Basin and Atomic Energy's Hanford Works. 2 CONT Later, he directed operations of the Bremerton Freight Car Ferry, a 2 CONT rail-car barge operations across Puget Sound Seattle and Bremerton, 2 CONT Washington. He represented the Railroad in Alaska and as the Railroad's 2 CONT International Freight Offical, opened an office in Tokyo Japan in 1968 for 2 CONT the solicitation of container traffic between the Far East and US North 2 CONT Coast Ports. He served as International Manager and Chief Rate Officer in 2 CONT the Railroad's Chicago Headquarters in 1970 - 73. He estimates that during 2 CONT his married life and working career he and his family moved 36 times. After 2 CONT retirement from the Milwaukee Railroad on March 1, 1975. (NOTE) The 2 CONT Milwaukee Railroad went bankrup in 1977 - abandoned or sold its West End 2 CONT Lines west of Minnesota and in 1985 sold the balance of its rail property 2 CONT to the Soo Line Railroad. 2 CONT George and his wife first settled in their Edmonds, Wa. condominimum, 2 CONT later in 1977 moved to Hemet, Ca. and lived in a mobile home community 2 CONT (Sierra Dawn), and then in 1980 decided to move back to Washington to be 2 CONT closed to their daughters - here they purchased a condominimum in Windcrest 2 CONT Villa on West Lincoln Avenue, Yakima, Washington. 2 CONT In Sept. 1990, the doctors diagnosed George having Paget's Disease -a 2 CONT blood disorder, (elevated Alkaline Phosphatase) which replaces good bone 2 CONT with poor bone. It has effected the right theigh or long bone of the leg 2 CONT with a loss of about 30% of the good mineralize bone. There is no 2 CONT definitive cure, but by medication the disease can be controlled. As one 2 CONT doctor commented: "It won't kill you but will surely be an aggravation". 2 CONT George's physical activity is now restricted - had to give up such 2 CONT activities as walking, golf and those that require the use of two good 2 CONT legs. Research has not established the cause of this disease but has 2 CONT suggested it might come from a regenerated laten virus from childhood 2 CONT diseases. and lately, researchers hint there appears to be a similarity 2 CONT with the virus of distemper. The disease is not inherited but records 2 CONT indicate that male decendents of a Paget Disease patient have a greater 2 CONT chance to have it than non-Paget Disease descendents. Paget's Disease 2 CONT afflicts some 3% of males over 40 years of age but most do not have 2 CONT sufficient symptoms to know of its existance. 2 CONT On March 26, 1995, George's children honored him on his March 27th eighty- 2 CONT fifth birthday with a reception for relative and friends in Seattle's Camlin 2 CONT Hotel Cloud Room. In addition to the many relative and friends in attendance 2 CONT from the Puget Sound area, Pat and Charles McCarthy from California, son, 2 CONT George and wife Rita of Chicago, Joseph and Dorothy Flynn of Helena, Montana 2 CONT and James and Elsa Flynn of Spokane were in attendance. It was a loving gala 2 CONT affair. On December 25, 1997, George stumbled in his daughter Sally's house 2 CONT and broke is right Paget Diseased leg. The doctors inserted a 32-cm steel 2 CONT rod in the femur by driving it thru the arm of the hip bone. This 2 CONT successful operation should enable him to have more mobility in the 2 CONT future. 1 FAMS @F134@ 1 FAMC @F102@ 0 @I435@ INDI 1 NAME FLORENCE MAY /VANDERVORT/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU TEACHER 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 NOV 1909 2 PLAC LUDINGTON, MICHIGAN 1 DEAT 2 DATE 29 SEP 1993 2 PLAC YAKIMA,WA 1 BURI 2 DATE 29 OCT 1993 2 PLAC CREMATION PLOT, TERRACE HGHTS MEM PARK 1 NOTE Florence May Vandervort born 20-Nov-1909, Ludington, Michigan, 2 CONT occupation TEACHER, married George Festis Flynn, 23-Aug-1934 in Miles 2 CONT City, Montana, born 27-Mar-1910, Miles City, Montana, occupation, 2 CONT ret.traffic railroad official.
