As such, John Graham (or 2 CONT Gresham) was one of those late-arriving, early pioneers. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE In 1832, the first settlement was made on the Little Tebo by 2 CONT Milton Kincaid, John Graham and George Blanton with their 2 CONT families. Kincaid purchased a clearing from the Indians which 2 CONT later become the farm of Albert Kincaid (Milton Kincaid's son?). 2 CONT John Graham built near Spring Grove Church. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Given the fact that Kincaid, Graham and Blanton settled the 2 CONT Little Tebo tegether, it is possible they knew one another prior 2 CONT to 1832, and may or may not have been related by blood. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The 1850 Federal census shows that John Graham was born in 2 CONT Tennessee in 1820. His wife, Rebecca Harrison, is shown as 2 CONT having been born in Ohio in 1828. However, the information on 2 CONT her tombstone in the North Powder, Oregon Cemetery indicates 2 CONT that she was born in 1823. Also, her son, Albert Kincaid 2 CONT Graham's death certificate states that she was born in Alabama. 2 CONT In this census, John and Rebecca Graham are shown along with 2 CONT five children: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Jonas B. 1841 in Missouri 1 NOTE Daniel B. 1843 in Missouri 1 NOTE William B. 1850 in Missouri 1 NOTE Unice B. 1845 in Missouri 1 NOTE Sarah B. 1847 in Missouri 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Margaret Catherine and Albert Kincaid were not listed because 2 CONT they were not yet born. It is presumed that the same holds true 2 CONT for John, although this is not substantiated. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Also, in the same 1850 census, the Catharine Graham family was 2 CONT listed. It is provided here because in the 1876 State census, 2 CONT Catherarine Graham is shown as living in John Graham's 2 CONT household. The other Graham family is listed as follows: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Catharine 62 B. 1788 in South Carolina 1 NOTE Nancy 28 B. 1822 in Alabama 1 NOTE Elizabeth 20 B. 1830 in Alabama 1 NOTE Margrett 17 B. 1833 in Missouri 1 NOTE 1 NOTE They arrived in Missouri between 1830 and 1833, presumably in 2 CONT 1832, along with the John Graham family. Because the youngest 2 CONT daughter was born in 1833 in Missouri, it is reasonable to 2 CONT speculate that Catarine's husband, ? Graham, also migrated to 2 CONT Missouri with them, dying sometime after the conception of their 2 CONT daughter Margrett (she was born in 1833) and before 1850 (he is 2 CONT not listed in the 1850 census). 1 NOTE 1 NOTE In the 1876 State census, the "combined" Graham family is listed 2 CONT as follows: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE John Graham 45+ 1 NOTE Rebecca Graham 45+ 1 NOTE Catharine Graham 45+ 1 NOTE J. K. (male) 21/45 1 NOTE W. G. (male) 21/45 1 NOTE John 18/21 1 NOTE Catharine 10/21 1 NOTE A. K. (male) 10/21 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Unice (Eunice) Elizabeth Graham did not appear with the Graham 2 CONT family on this 1876 census since in 1871 she married Joseph 2 CONT Marion Younce and they undoubtedly had established a separate 2 CONT household. It is presumed that Daniel and Sarah did not appear 2 CONT for comparable reasons, as well as Nancy, Elizabeth and Margrett 2 CONT from the "other" Graham household. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Family tradition is that Rebecca Graham, as a widow, came West 2 CONT by covered wagon in 1880 with at least five children and one 2 CONT son-in-law, as follows: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Eunice Elizabeth and her husband, Joseph Marion Younce 1 NOTE William "Billy" 1 NOTE John 1 NOTE Margaret Catherine 1 NOTE Albert Kincaid 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Since Rebecca's husband, John appears in the 1876 State census, 2 CONT it is presumed that he died between 1876 and 1880 in Benton Co., 2 CONT Missouri, although this is unsubstantiated. It is not known 2 CONT what happened to Jonas, Daniel and Sarah Graham. They may have 2 CONT stayed in Missouri or they may have traveled West, etc. 2 CONT Likewise, there is no information as to what happened to 2 CONT Catharine (in the 1876 census she was 88 years of age so it may 2 CONT be that she died in Benton Co., Missouri between 1876 and 1880). 2 CONT Also, there is no information as to what happened to Catharine 2 CONT Graham's children (Nancy, Elizabeth and Margrett). As young 2 CONT adults they may have married and established separate household; 2 CONT however, this too is unsubstantiated. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The senerio may have been like this: ? Graham may have met and 2 CONT married Catharine in South Carolina or Tenessee. In any event, 2 CONT they lived together in Tennessee and had at least one child 2 CONT while living there (John Graham in 1820). Between 1820 and 1822 2 CONT they moved to Alabama where Nancy and Elizabeth were born (and 2 CONT presumably this is where John Graham met and married his wife, 2 CONT Rebecca Harrison). John and Rebecca Graham then moved to Benton 2 CONT Co., Missouri in 1832 where they were pioneer settlers along the 2 CONT Libble Tebo. John's parents and two of their children still 2 CONT living at home (Nancy and Elizabeth) migrated to Benton County 2 CONT with their son John. After arriving in Missouri, John's father 2 CONT and mother had one additional child (Margrett). John's father 2 CONT died between 1833 and 1850, leaving Catharine a widow with three 2 CONT daughters at home. After the three daughters left home, perhaps 2 CONT to marry and establish separate households, Catharine moved in 2 CONT with her son John and daughter-in-law Rebecca. Presumably John 2 CONT and his Mother Catharine died between 1876 (they both were 2 CONT living when the State census was taken) and 1880 (the year 2 CONT John's widow, Rebecca, moved West to Oregon with at least some 2 CONT of her children). These presumptions and speculations are just 2 CONT that and are in need of additional research to either 2 CONT substantiate or not substantiate them as facts. 1 HIST 1850 Federal Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 HIST 1876 State Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 HIST Williams, Jacqueline Hogan and Betty Harvey, Records of Benton 2 CONT County, Missouri, 1969 1 HIST Death Certificate for Albert Kincaid Graham 1 FAMC @F1@ 1 FAMS @F2@ 0 @I4@ INDI 1 NAME Nancy /Graham/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1822 2 PLAC Alabama 1 NOTE See notes for John Graham (3) 1 HIST 1850 Federal Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 HIST 1876 State Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I5@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth /Graham/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1830 2 PLAC Alabama 1 NOTE See notes for John Graham (3) 1 HIST 1850 Federal Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 HIST 1876 State Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I6@ INDI 1 NAME Margrett /Graham/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1833 2 PLAC Missouri 1 NOTE See notes for John Graham (3) 1 HIST 1850 Federal Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 HIST 1876 State Census for Benton County, Missouri 1 FAMC @F1@ 0 @I7@ INDI 1 NAME Rebecca /Harrison/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 28 DEC 1822 2 PLAC Alabama 1 DEAT 2 DATE 26 JUN 1901 2 PLAC North Powder, Oregon 1 BURI 2 PLAC North Powder, Oregon 1 NOTE Rebecca Harrison Graham moved from Missouri in 1880, traveling 2 CONT by covered wagon to Eastern Oregon, first settling in Clover 2 CONT Creek. Family tradition suggests that at least three of her 2 CONT sons (William "Billy", John, and Albert Kincaid) and at least 2 CONT two of her daughters (Eunice Elizabeth and Margaret Catherine 2 CONT "Kit") traveled with her. Eunice Elizabeth was married and her 2 CONT husband, Joseph Youncs and their son, Lee (born in 1872) also 2 CONT traveled with the group. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE There is a story about their trip West that Rebecca's son Albert 2 CONT shared with his son Elbert Eldon "Bill" Graham. Bill then 2 CONT shared the story with his son Denis. It goes like this: 2 CONT Rebecca and her children came West by covered wagon with four 2 CONT other families. The name of one of the other families was 2 CONT McMurdo (the spelling may not be correct). The family had a son 2 CONT named Jasper who was about 10 years older than Albert. When 2 CONT these families were crossing Utah their mules were stolen during 2 CONT the night. The next morning, one of Albert's older brothers 2 CONT (Billie? John?), along with an older brother of Jasper's set 2 CONT out to reclaim the mules. When the returned a day or two later 2 CONT they had the mules with them. However, neither one of them 2 CONT would tell anyone anything about what happend to the person or 2 CONT persons who stole the mules. Albert Graham and his friend 2 CONT Jasper McMurdo always suspected they had been killed by their 2 CONT brothers as punishment for the theft. Bill Graham remembered 2 CONT his father, Albert, being visited by Jasper McMurdo who was by 2 CONT then a retired rancher living somewhere in or around the North 2 CONT Powder area. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE It is believed that Rebecca lived with her youngest child, 2 CONT Albert and his wife Sarah from the time of their marriage in 2 CONT 1888 until she (Rebecca) died in 1901. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE In the book entitled, "History of Union and Wallowa Counties," 2 CONT Rebecca is mentioned as the mother of Miss Eunice E. Ray would call him "scissorbill" and that 2 CONT nickname was later shortened to "Bill." 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Bill lived with his parents on their farm in Wolf Creek, near 2 CONT North Powder, Oregon, and then in Baker, Oregon. He worked on 2 CONT his parent's farm and on neighboring farms. During that time he 2 CONT also worked with his father as a lumberjack. Bill's Nephew, 2 CONT Norman Wirth, remembered Bill, while working as a luberjack, 2 CONT having cut his foot with a double-bitted axe and hobbling around 2 CONT on crutches. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE During the Great Depression and half-way through his senior year 2 CONT of high school, his parents were struggling financially. 2 CONT Therefore, Bill dropped out of high school (He later finished 2 CONT his high school education in the 1960s.) and left home, taking 2 CONT whatever odd jobs he could find to support himself. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE His brother, Ray, had been able to find full-time employment in 2 CONT the mines in Nevada, so Bill joined him there in the early '30s. 2 CONT They worked at least two mines together: first, the mine in 2 CONT Mountain City, Nevada, and then the Mary Mine in Silver Peak, 2 CONT Nevada. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE While in Silver Peak, Bill lived in a boarding house owned by 2 CONT Alta Dyson Brown. During his stay there, Alta's sister, Mildred 2 CONT Dyson Brown (the "Brown" husbands were not related), came to 2 CONT stay for a time to help Alta with her recordkeeping. It was 2 CONT there that Bill met Mildred, his future wife. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Subsequently, Mildred left Silver Peak and moved to San 2 CONT Francisco, California. Bill followed her and obtained 2 CONT employment in the mines in Grass Valley, California (a mine as 2 CONT close in proximity to the Bay Area as was to be found). He 2 CONT commuted to San Francisco on his days off to continue his 2 CONT courtship with Mildred. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE They were married in December of 1937 in the home of the Pastor 2 CONT of the First Methodist-Episcopal Church, Reno, Nevada. They 2 CONT first lived in Sheep Ranch, California where Bill continued to 2 CONT work in a mine. Eventually they left Sheep Ranch and moved to 2 CONT Silver Peak, Nevada. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE When they were expecting their first child and upon the 2 CONT recommendation of their doctor located in Hawthorne, Nevada, 2 CONT they moved to be closer to doctors and hospitals. Therefore, 2 CONT they left Silver Peak for Santa Rosa, California, and lived with 2 CONT Bill's Sister, Betha Graham, until their first child's birth. 2 CONT During the time they lived in Santa Rosa, Bill commuted to South 2 CONT San Francisco to work in the shipyards. In 1941, after the 2 CONT birth of their son, Denis, they moved to be closer to Bill's 2 CONT work, living in San Mateo and Redwood City, California. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Eventually, they left the Bay Area and moved to Bishop, 2 CONT California where Bill worked in a mine some miles outside of 2 CONT Bishop. In 1943, they moved to Reno, Nevada and it was there 2 CONT that their second child, a son, Terry, was born in 1947. During 2 CONT that time Bill worked for the railroad and for a concrete block 2 CONT company. In 1950 Bill moved with his family to Hawthorne, 2 CONT Nevada, to own and operate the Hawthorne Bakery and Gift Shop. 2 CONT In 1959, he sold the Bakery and moved to Sparks, Nevada, where 2 CONT he obtained employment with a concrete company as an operating 2 CONT engineer. After Bill retired in 1976, they moved in 1977 to 2 CONT Oregon and then in 1978 to Chico, California. At the age 2 CONT of furteen our subject was called to mourn the loss of his 2 CONT father, and from that time until he was twenty-four years of age 2 CONT he was constant in labor on the farm for his mother and the 2 CONT other members of his family. When he had arrived at the age of 2 CONT twenty-four, others had matured to be able to shoulder some of 2 CONT the responsibilities of life, and John H. followed the desire 2 CONT that the reports from the Pacific slope had kindled in his 2 CONT brest, that of coming hither to seek his fortune and build a 2 CONT place for himself. Accordingly he embarked with an expedition 2 CONT that was bringing cattle to the coast. It consisted of eighteen 2 CONT men, four wagons drawn by oxen, thirty-five horses and mules, 2 CONT and six hundred and seventy-six head of cattle. For four months 2 CONT and one day they steadily pursued their way toward the setting 2 CONT sun, and then arrived in Beckwith valley, in California. Mr. 2 CONT O'Bryant went from there to Mariposa county and commenced to 2 CONT mine, continuing at that enterprise until the spring of 1857, 2 CONT thenwent to Sonoma county and there worked in the redwood 2 CONT forests for a period and then in 1860 came to Salem inthis state 2 CONT and later went to Polk county. In this latter place he remained 2 CONT until the fall of 1862, and then came to Auburn, in Baker 2 CONT county, and embarked as freighter from The Dalles to Auburn, and 2 CONT in 1863 he went to Idaho basin with freight. In the fall of 2 CONT this year he came to Baker county, settling eight miles below 2 CONT Baker City and remained there until 1866. In that year he came 2 CONT to his present place, which is five miles west from North Powder 2 CONT and entered a homestead on the ground where he is living at the 2 CONT present time. To the original holding he has added by purchase 2 CONT until he has a good farm of two hundred and fifty acres. During 2 CONT all the years from 1866 until the present time, he has labored 2 CONT faithfully and wisely at the home place, and the result is tha 2 CONT he has a fine estate, well improved, large barn, good dwelling, 2 CONT orchard and many other conveniences and necessaries that make 2 CONT the rural life both pleasant and profitable. While Mr. O'Bryant 2 CONT has devoted most of his time to the chuture of the soil, he has 2 CONT some stock and gives some attention to rearing animals. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The marriage of Mr. O'Bryant and Mrs. Elizabeth J. Mr. O'Bryant's mother died in 1967, near 2 CONT Springfield, Missouri. Mr. O'Bryant has seen much of the life 2 CONT of the frontiersman and endured the hardships that beset that 2 CONT path, taking his full share in both danger and grief and 2 CONT endurance of trying ordeals, but at the present time he 2 CONT isenjoying the fruit of his toil and the esteem and love of his 2 CONT neighbors, and all that are acquainted with him, while he and 2 CONT his wife are faithful in showing to a world the light of 2 CONT Christianity and the Redeemer of mankind, whom they delight to 2 CONT honor and love to follow. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE John Harvey O'Bryant was the Uncle of Jessie William O'Bryant 2 CONT (289) 1 HIST An Illustrated History of Union and Wallowa Counties with a 2 CONT Brief Outline of the Early History of the State of Oregon, 2 CONT Western Historical Publishing Company, 1902, pp. 288-289. 1 FAMS @F206@ 0 @I270@ INDI 1 NAME David /Baty/ 1 SEX M 1 HIST Pickerill, W.
