2 CONT Missouri, Judge Locke was educated in California.  He attended St. Mary's
2 CONT College, College of Marin and San Francisco Law School and received his A.A.,
2 CONT LL.B. and LL.D. Degrees.  He was a Justice of the Peace for five years and a
2 CONT Judge of Judicial District for five years.
2 CONT    He was interested in Crime, Punishment, Prevention and Correction.  The
2 CONT Judge had several nicknames:
2 CONT    To his neighbors and friends he was known as Judge and Will;
2 CONT    To his enemies as Hanging Judge Locke;
2 CONT    To World War II buddies as Charlie.
2 CONT April 9, 1986, Oakland Tribune:
2 CONT    MARTINEZ--C. Wilson Locke, recognized by his peers as ``direct and tough,
2 CONT but fair'' during his 26 years as a justice of the peace and Municipal Court
2 CONT judge in San Pablo, died at the Veterans Hospital here yesterday morning after
2 CONT a brief illness. He was 73.
2 CONT    A native of Stockton [Missouri], Locke was a graduate of Richmond High
2 CONT School and St. Mary's College.  He was elected justice of the peace of
2 CONT Township 10 in 1946.
2 CONT    Two years later, he passed the bar examination after attending night
2 CONT classes at the San Francisco Law School.  Locke learned the results of the
2 CONT exam in a veteran's hospital [in Livermore, CA], where he was being treated
2 CONT for tuberculosis.
2 CONT    In 1952, Locke was named police court judge for San Pablo.  He became the
2 CONT city's first municipal judge in 1957.
2 CONT    He retired in 1972 and began a life of travel, playing golf and working for
2 CONT a retirement fund for attorneys throughout the state.
2 CONT    Locke was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; a member of the California
2 CONT Judges Association; founder of Post No. 6421 VFW, San Pablo; and member of the
2 CONT American Legion, Post 701, San Pablo, the Peace Officers Association of Contra
2 CONT Costa County; the Alumni Association of St. Mary's College; San Pablo Lodge
2 CONT 754 F&AM;  Scottish Rite Bodies and Aahmes Temple; and the Richmond Elks
2 CONT Lodge.
2 CONT    The judge is survived by his wife, Pauline Locke of El Sobrante; a daughter
2 CONT Janice Penberthy of Oakland; two sons; Wilson R. Locke of Thousand Oaks [CA],
2 CONT and Alan Locke of Point Arena [CA]; a stepson, Rondy Dike of Seattle.
2 CONT    The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Chapel of the
2 CONT Mission Bells of the Wilson-Kratzer Mortuary in San Pablo.
2 CONT    The burial service will be held Friday at the Riverside National Cemetery
2 CONT in Riverside [CA].

2 CONT and Pinole Mayor James Locke, died at his home here yesterday following a
2 CONT five-month illness.  He was 81.
2 CONT    A native of Stockton, Mo., Mr. Locke came to California about 1910.  He
2 CONT went to work for Contra Costa County in 1920 and was superintendent of roads
2 CONT in the first supervisorial district on retirement in 1955.  The family home is
2 CONT at 3410 San Pablo Dam Road.
2 CONT    Mr. Locke was a member of Eclipse Lodge No. 403, IOOF, of Richmond and the
2 CONT Contra Costa County employees Assn.
2 CONT    Surviving besides the judge and mayor are his widow, Ella; a sister, Mrs.
2 CONT Myrtle Bryant of Stockton, Mo.; five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

2 CONT    PINOLE -- Services are to be held today in Richmond for former Pinole Mayor
2 CONT James E. Locke, who died here Saturday [April 25] in Doctor's Hospital after a
2 CONT long illness.
2 CONT     Services are at 12:30 p.m. in the Civic Center Chapel of Wilson and
2 CONT Kratzer Mortuaries.
2 CONT    Locke was elected to the Pinole City Council in 1962, but resigned in 1963
2 CONT to work in Alaska for several months for the Standard Oil Co. of California
2 CONT which employed him as an instrument technician.
2 CONT    In 1965, he was appointed to the Pinole City Council to fill a vacancy.  He
2 CONT won election to another four-year term in 1966 and was named mayor for
2 CONT 1968-69.
2 CONT    Robert Shadley, who served with Locke on the council for several years,
2 CONT said he ``didn't particularly like to rock the boat unless an issue came up
2 CONT that he figured deserved a good rocking, and then he gave it a good rock.''
2 CONT    Locke is survived by his brother, former West Judicial District Municipal
2 CONT Court Judge C. Wilson Locke, of El Sobrante, and by a son, James of Pinole; a
2 CONT daughter, Catharine M. Coker of Fountain Valley, and his mother, Ella May

2 CONT    Harriet Jane Locke was born in Kentucky June 16, 1850, died August 29th,
2 CONT 1928, being at the time of death 78 years 2 months and 14 days old.
2 CONT    Mother Locke came to Missouri when a small girl and has lived in this
2 CONT immediate vicinity for many years.
2 CONT    She has been a dear friend and help to all who knew her.
2 CONT    Being converted when in her younger years she had remained a faithful
2 CONT member of the Methodist church for many years.
2 CONT    Mrs. Locke being a widow had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. C.P.
2 CONT Bryant for most all of the last eleven yers.  She leaves to mourn her death 4
2 CONT sons and 1 daughter, 4 living grandchildren and will be greatly missed by them
2 CONT as well as by her friends.  Surley their loss will be Heaven's gain.
2 CONT    The following children mourn her death:  Andy, Charles and Mrs. C.P. Bryant
2 CONT of Stockton, Mo., Rome of Berkeley, Calif., and George Edmiston of North
2 CONT Dakota.
2 CONT    Furneral services were conducted by Rev. L.L. Tucker at the home of Mrs.
2 CONT C.P. Bryant.  The remains, in charge of Davis Undertaking Company, were laid
2 CONT to rest in the city cemetery.
2 CONT    We wish to thank all of our friends for the sympathy and thoughtfulness
2 CONT bestowed upon us in our recent hour of bereavement.  We feel that your
2 CONT kindness was not bestowed upon us solely because of our sorrow but as one last
2 CONT service to our mother.

2 CONT    He is survived by his loving wife, Gorda, one sister, Myrtle Bryant of
2 CONT Stockton and one brother, Jerome Locke, of Richmond, Calif., several nieces
2 CONT and nephews and a host of friends.
2 CONT    He was the eldest of five children and had thirteen older half-sisters and
2 CONT half-brothers who have preceded him in death.
2 CONT    He was always active in politics and served as deputy sheriff of Cedar
2 CONT County two terms.  He was a kind and loving husband and brother.  He was a
2 CONT friend to all; always doing kind deeds, deeds that others never knew about
2 CONT except those whom he helped. He helped many a wayward boy although he never
2 CONT had any children of his won and always loved his nieces and nephews.  He was
2 CONT always jolly and joking and seeing the bright side of life, never telling his
2 CONT own troubles or how he felt to others.
2 CONT    He was a farmer and stockman, having lived 46 years on the same farm
2 CONT northwest of Stockton.  He retired in 1962 and he and his wife moved to
2 CONT Stockton.  The Locke's celebrated their golden wedding anniversary May 12,
2 CONT 1967.
2 CONT    He led a very active life, walking to town every day until he was stricken
2 CONT with illness.  He was taken to the Baptist Hospital in Springfield where he
2 CONT passed away.
2 CONT    All was done that could be done by loving care to restore his health but
2 CONT all was in vain since God saw fit to take him from his loving relatives and
2 CONT friends.

2 CONT    Myrtle Locke Bryant, daughter of Matthew and Harriet Bourland Locke,
2 CONT passed away Saturday, May 4, 1985, at Cedar County Memorial Hospital in El
2 CONT Dorado Springs.  She was 92 years and 3 months of age.
2 CONT    Myrtle Locke was united in marriage to Cordas P. Bryant on Oct. 13, 1910.
2 CONT Cordas passed away on Nov. 5, 1974.  At the time of his death, they had been
2 CONT married 64 years.
2 CONT    Not having any children of their own, Cordas and Myrtle took a niece into
2 CONT their home, Edna Bryant Day, when she was 4 years old.  She lived with them 26
2 CONT years until she was married.  She came as their own child over the years.
2 CONT    On April 9, 1932, Cordas, Myrtle and Edna were baptized by Elder L.L.
2 CONT Tucker and joined the Stockton Missionary Baptist Church.  Myrtle remained a
2 CONT member until her death.
2 CONT    Myrtle maintained her home in Stockton until she became disabled in July
2 CONT 1977.  She resided in nursing homes since then.
2 CONT    Survivors include Edna Bryant Day of Stockton; two nephews, Wilson Locke of
2 CONT San Pablo, Calif., and Gene Edmiston of El Dorado Springs; one niece, Florence
2 CONT Johnson of Bolivar; one grandson, Don Clifford Day of Fair Grove; two great
2 CONT grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

2 CONT   I will start with the Simmons first, my Father was born May 6, 1862, as you
2 CONT know that was during the Civil War.  He passed away in 1938.  My Mother, Ella
2 CONT Crabtree, was born in 1861 and passed away in 1941.  My Grandmother, my
2 CONT Father's mother, was Martha Butner Simmons and was born in 1840.  She
2 CONT married a Captain James Simmons, who was killed in the Civil War on the Union
2 CONT Army side.  They lived near Stockton, Missouri and had two sons, Tom Bent and
2 CONT two years later, my father, James Grant Simmons.  They of course being boys,
2 CONT and so forth didn't take kindly to a step-father when my Grandmother, Martha
2 CONT Simmons married again.  She married a Dr. Sampsel.  They had quite a family
2 CONT after that, but we never knew of them very much.  Some of them moved, they did
2 CONT not linger around Stockton.  Some of them went to Oregon as they grew up, so
2 CONT we never heard much of the Sampsel side of the family.
2 CONT    When my father was fourteen years old, and his brother was sixteen years
2 CONT old, they decided to come to California.  By one way or another they got hold
2 CONT of a couple of horses, and started riding to California.  They got out into
2 CONT Kansas, which was the next state west of Missouri.  My Father's brother, Tom
2 CONT Bent, got cold feet and he decided it would be a pretty rough journey so he
2 CONT turned around and went back to Missouri.  My Father continued on, to the
2 CONT Southern part of the United States and finally out to California.  He went
2 CONT down through Arizona, Mexico and picked up quite a few Spanish words.  He
2 CONT remembered these for many, many years.  But, after he was in California for
2 CONT a few years, he returned to Stockton and married my Mother, Ella Crabtree.
2 CONT My Mother's Father was Mason Crabtree.  He was struck with gold fever and
2 CONT went to California.  He was never heard from again, we don't know if he was
2 CONT killed or died of natural causes.
2 CONT    Her Mother, Mrs. Darnell Crabtree, only lived a few of years after he left.
2 CONT She died of a broken heart.  That left Ella Crabtree alone to care for herself
2 CONT at eight years of age.  Ella had to go live with farmers around the vicinity
2 CONT of Stockton, Missouri, to work on their farms and in their homes for a meager
2 CONT salary.  Being an eight year old, she didn't get much schooling, but a lot of
2 CONT hard work.  She survived many years, and was given hand-me-down clothing
2 CONT from the families she worked with, and this was all she could get.  When she
2 CONT was sixteen years old, she decided she should have some salary, so they
2 CONT gave her 50 cents a week.  For this she worked seven days a week, 365 days
2 CONT a year, from daylight to after dark, on farms and helping around the house
2 CONT and doing other chores.
2 CONT    The site of Stockton, Missouri was 40 acres of land given by the Crabtrees
2 CONT for the town site of Stockton, which now stands.  Records are in the abstract
2 CONT and title company books in Stockton, if you care to look this information up,
2 CONT I did.  Joe Hendricks, an old timer there, who is a few years older than I,
2 CONT knew all about it.  He knew all the records and what transpired.
2 CONT   I would like to tell you a little more about my Mother's side of the family,
2 CONT but most of them left Stockton and vicinity where they were living on farms
2 CONT and moved down into Oklahoma.  They moved to Elk City and survived there.  One
2 CONT time we were in that part of the country and I made it a point to stop by and
2 CONT see how they were.  I found their names, Crabtree, in the telephone directory
2 CONT and checked with them; we went out one evening after dinner and spent a few
2 CONT hours with the family.   They were still living there, a very nice group of
2 CONT people, fine people, but that is about all I know about my Mother's side of
2 CONT the family.
2 CONT    My Grandmother, before she married Capt. James Simmons was a Butner.  There
2 CONT were quite a few Butners living around the countryside of Stockton,
2 CONT Missouri.  She was a remarkable woman, a very pretty woman, very nice, I knew
2 CONT her quite well when I was a youngster around the Stockton area.
2 CONT    My Mother and Father had five daughters and one son.  Oma Belle was a
2 CONT triplet, the other two triplet daughters died shortly after childbirth.  The
2 CONT other three children were daughters Ethel and Ella, I was the only son.
2 CONT Oma Belle married Tom Campbell at an early age.  They lived on an adjoining
2 CONT farm, that my Father had.  They had one son, Frank Campbell.  Tom was not a
2 CONT very good provider, and Oma had to bring her son, Frank, and live with my
2 CONT Mother and Father.  After several years she married Perle Oldham.  They had
2 CONT two sons and two daughters.  They were Emerson, Elton, Ruby and Jewell.
2 CONT Ruby died when she was in her late twenties, she came out to California and
2 CONT married a fellow, Ben Hoeffer, who lived in Richmond, California.  I believe
2 CONT her appendix ruptured and that was the cause of her death.  They had two
2 CONT sons, Jimmy and Eddie.
2 CONT     My sister, Ethel, married Lon Butler at an early age, they had one child,
2 CONT which died at childbirth, and that ended the children.  They were divorced
2 CONT in 1923.  Ethel never married again.
2 CONT    My sister, Ella, married Jerome Locke.  He passed away in 1971. Ella passed
2 CONT away in September 1983. They had three children, the first one was a
2 CONT daughter, but she was never healthy and died after about three years.  Then
2 CONT there were Wilson and James Locke.  James passed away in 1981.  He was quite
2 CONT a favorite of mine.

2 CONT    Martha Butner, was born in Hopkins county, Kentucky Oct. 4, 1840.  Departed
2 CONT this life Mar. 25, 1927 being at the time of her death 86 years, 5 months, 21
2 CONT days.  She was the daughter of Thomas and Mellissa Butner.
2 CONT    She was the fourth of a family of ten children.  Came with her parents from
2 CONT Kentucky to Cedar county [Missouri] in the year 1850.
2 CONT    She was married to Jas. Simmons April 10, 1856.  To this union were born
2 CONT three sons, one dying in infancy.  T.B. of Stockton, Mo., and J.G. of Richmond
2 CONT California surviver her.
2 CONT    She was left a widow Nov. 1863.  Later she was married to Isaac Samsel.  To
2 CONT this union were born five children, three sons and two daughters.  Two sons of
2 CONT this union survive, John L. of Everett, Wash., Henry A. of Kamiah, Idaho.  She
2 CONT also has one living sister, Mrs. Akins of Beaverton, Ore.
2 CONT    In early life she was convered and united with the M.E. Church and remained
2 CONT faithful until death came and relieved her of her suffering.  She had been an
2 CONT invalid for four years.  She was always patient and cheeful in her helpless
2 CONT condition.  She had lived near Stockton since 1850, and the last 21 years
2 CONT resided in Stockton with her son T.B. Simmons, who was very devoted to her and
2 CONT cared for her so tenderly and faithfully.
2 CONT    She leaves three step sons, J.L., H.T. and Geo. S. Samsel and a host of
2 CONT other relatives and friends.
2 CONT    It being her request, the funeral was conducted by J.L. Samsel, scriptural
2 CONT reading St. John, 14 chapter.  Burial in Alder cemetery in the presence of a
2 CONT host of relatives and friends.
2 CONT    Mrs. Samsell was one of the small number of widows of Mexican War veterans.
2 CONT Her first husband was in that war and Dr. Samsell her second husband was in
2 CONT the Civil War.  (Note: first husband Jame Simmons died in the Civil War and

2 CONT    Thomas Thomas Darneille was in Albemarie County, Va., in 1773, as his son
2 CONT Archelaus (later Archibald) was born there at that time (family legend).  Was
2 CONT with George Rogers Clark (also of Albemarle Co., Va.) in his campaign against
2 CONT the Wabash Indians and at the capture of Vincennes.  For this he received
2 CONT ``scrip,'' as shown by its later transfer for $13.33.  In 1783 he received, as
2 CONT Thomas Darnel, a grant of 400 acres of land laying in what is now Bourbon Co.,
2 CONT Ky., about one and one-half miles northwest of N. Middleton in that county,
2 CONT and some five or six miles southeast of Paris, Ky.  It lies at the junction of

1 NOTE In 1820 John Robson II brought his wife and eight of their nine children to
2 CONT settle in the dense forest of Upper Canada. Ann, their eighth child, was ten
2 CONT when her family emigrated; she remained in England with two Calvert uncles.
2 CONT The family prospered and in a few years held 2,500 acres of prime Crown land.
2 CONT John was accidentally killed on his way home from town. He had dismounted to
2 CONT pickup a whip he dropped and when he started to get on his horse, it bolted
2 CONT and threw him.  He hit his head on a stone and died six hours later.
