Here Lewis had a store and jewelry shop. Their daughter Margaret married Bryan William Bruce. 2 CONT Their daughter Carol died in infancy. Their daughter Juanita married Harold James Smith. 1 NOTE - by Juanita Miller Smith 1 NOTE Lewis Miller, in addition to running a jewelry shop, had many interests and acquired many skills -- carpentry, cabinet-making, and other ornate wordworking activities along with mirror resilvering, photography, and a keen interest in science 2 CONT and in far away places. Family tradition has it that Lewis collected every issue of both Popular Science and National Geographic magazines from their initial issue until his death in 1939. The landing at the top of the staircase of his 1930s 2 CONT home was walled with shelving containing these magazines and other books and materials of interest to him. Among them was a copy of Jules Verne's book, FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON. Of this story, in the early 1930s he told his young 2 CONT granddaughter, Catherine Bruce, that before she died man would walk on the moon. Of course, at that time, his prediction was brushed off as an old man's musings, as everybody knew that the moon was too far to ever be reached -- at least in any 2 CONT (then) current lifetimes. 1 NOTE As for his love of far away places, Lewis Miller took action to satisfy it. Around 1900, because he so wanted to visit Niagra Falls, he took his family there for vacation from their northwest Missouri home -- by covered wagon!!! Later in his 2 CONT life, Lewis built what his grandchildren jokingly refer to as "the world's first motorhome." Though it probably wasn't the world's first, it was nonetheless a feat. Lewis took a Model T Ford, replaced its body with a "car house" body which 2 CONT featured a fold-down bed at the rear, table and benches which folded out from the side walls, and a kerosene two-burner stove. In it, he and his wife chugged across the country, from Florida to Texas to California, and more, and back to 2 CONT Missouri. Behind the house-car he pulled a shop-trailer from which he did watch and clock repair in many of the places where they chose to stop and tarry. 1 NOTE The home of Lewis and Ida was behind and above their store until sometime after the crash of the stock market, when they went to a farm at Possum Walk, near Burlington Junction. 1 FAMS @F27@ 1 FAMC @F8@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 16 MAY 1997 0 @I78@ INDI 1 NAME MARGARET /TRACY/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1775 2 PLAC Baltimore County, Maryland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1853 2 PLAC near Cumberland, Morgan County, OHIO 1 NOTE Line 2514 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long: CENS 1 NOTE Line 2515 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long: CENS DATE 1850 1 NOTE Line 2516 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long: CENS PLAC Brookfield Twp, Morgan Co., Ohio, (716), in household of son Jacob 1 NOTE Margaret Tracy, daughter of Basil and Chloe Merriman Tracy, was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, in 1775. Family tradition and memories are that Kim had four sisters, and three or four brothers. One of these sisters married the brother of the last queen of Korea, and thus 2 CONT became obscenely wealthy. Of the brothers, one was a high school principal in Chin-Ju, one lived in Taegu where he was a Presbyterian minister and herb doctor, and one or two died from the ravages of opium. 1 NOTE By 1933 she had married Chung Jong Kil, of Chin-ju, Korea. They then lived in Tokyo where he wrote and taught music. Chung was, or became, a socialist. 1 NOTE During the 1920s and 30s, Kim was a psychology student and, during the evenings, supplemented their income as a pianist. World War II in Japan brought worklife changes that proved to be more profitable that her pre-war sociological and 2 CONT artistic pursuits. During the war years, Kim was a street vendor of fishcakes, popular to the Japanese palate. 1 NOTE While in Japan they had six children, the last being Chung Kun Mi (Mia Chung Frankel). After WW II the family moved back to Seoul, Korea, leaving behind in Japan most of what they had acquired with the proceeds of the fishcake vending 2 CONT business. There they had one more son, who died at the age of three of pneumonia. In Seoul, they lived in a grand home which overlooked the city, bought for them by one of Kim's sisters. 1 NOTE Before the start of the Korean War, Kim's husband wanted to move the family to the northern part of the Korean peninsula where his socialist philosophies would be better appreciated. She, however, refused. He went anyway, alone. When the 2 CONT north invaded, she evacuated her family, less husband and one son that followed him, to the Chin-ju home of her husband's mother. The war reached Chin-ju, however, and another daughter was lost -- either killed or irretrievably separated in 2 CONT the chaos. 1 NOTE By the end of the war, Kim had lost her husband, a son, and a daughter -- the disposition of each uncertain. She had lost, too, virtually all her earthly possessions. Leaving the children with relatives who could care for them, she set about 2 CONT rebuilding her life. By 1960 she had gotten back on her feet and her oldest son and two youngest daughters were reunited with her in Kyonggi-do, north of Seoul, where they ran a record shop. 1 NOTE Her ultimate dream was to get all of her children to America, where life in the Korean mind was heavenly. Before her death of heart failure in 1968, she succeeded in seeing three emigrate to the U.S. 1 NOTE Kim In Soon died on September 16, 1968, exactly 39 days after her youngest daughter left Korea for a life in America with her husband. 1 FAMS @F10@ 0 @I164@ INDI 1 NAME FRANCES /YATES/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1750 1 DEAT 2 DATE 27 SEP 1834 1 FAMS @F69@ 1 FAMC @F516@ 0 @I165@ INDI 1 NAME RICHARD /YATES/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1751 1 DEAT 2 DATE NOV 1815 2 PLAC Culpeper County, VIRGINIA 1 FAMS @F70@ 1 FAMC @F516@ 0 @I166@ INDI 1 NAME JAMES Brodie /FRANKEL/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 OCT 1989 2 PLAC Fairfax County, VIRGINIA 1 FAMC @F43@ 0 @I167@ INDI 1 NAME Kun-Ok /CHUNG/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1933 2 PLAC TOKYO, JAPAN 1 DEAT 2 DATE NOV 1986 2 PLAC St. Petersburg, Florida 1 BURI 2 PLAC St. Petersburg, Florida 1 NOTE Line 166 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long: OCCU Seamstress 1 NOTE Line 167 from GEDCOM File not recognizable or too long: RESI South Korea, then St. Petersburg, Florida 1 NOTE Chung Kun Ok, oldest daughter or Chung Jong Kil and Kim In Soon, was born in Tokyo in 1933. 1 NOTE As a young adult she helped care for her younger brothers and sisters after the Korean War while her mother undertook the rebuilding of a livelihood. By the time her mother brought the family back together again, Kun Ok was in her upper 20s 2 CONT and chose to remain in Seoul. There she married and had one son, Hyun. The marriage failed, however. 1 NOTE In 1968 she married Larry Pastorius, then in Korea as a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel. Later that year Larry retired from the service, and took Kun Ok and his adopted son, Hyun, to his home town of St. Petersburg, Florida. 1 NOTE Because of the coincidental 1968 death of her mother and emigration of two sisters and herself to different parts of the U.S., contact with her Korea family was lost until 1981. A Teague Tracy was transported to Maryland by 1679 -- John Ravent was granted 800 acres for transporting to the province Tego Tracy and eleven others. 2 CONT Though no arrival date is on the papers, there is a date of 1649 (which may be in error). This is thought to be the Teague Tracy who married Mary James in St. James Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, on November 5, 1694. 1 NOTE There was another Teague Trassey who was brought to Virginia by Matilda Scarborough of Northumberland County, Virginia in 1655. This Teague is thought to have been about 12 or 14 at the time. The records show that a Col. Edmund Scarborough 2 CONT received of 5100 acres of land between 1651 and 1659 for transporting 102 persons to the province (50 acres per person). 1 NOTE In the 1690s there appear to have been four men named Tracey/Tracy in the same part of sourthern Anne Arundel County, or across the Patuxent River in Calvert and Prince Georges Counties. Thomas Tracy seems to have been related to the Teague 2 CONT who married Mary James. In addition, there was an innholder, Charles Tracey in Charles Town on the Patuxent River, who died between 1698 and 1699. Also, around Charles Town, Maryland, was a Hugh Tracey who witnessed deeds and wills in that 2 CONT area. 1 NOTE The inventory of the estate of John Abington (merchant) of Calvert County dated, 19 Feb 1694, includes in the list of debts: Charles Tracey, Tenego Trace, Ninian Beall, Josias Towgood, and over 150 other men. 1 NOTE Prince Georges County Land Records, Vol A, 1696-1702, has deeds of Charles and Teague Tracy, along with the appearance of Hugh Tracy as a witness. This volume has a map of the tract locations, and mentions that the names Charles Town and Mount 2 CONT Calvert are the same property. Charles Town was taken from a 1000 acre tract deeded to Philip Calvert 17 Feb 1658. Philip apparently deeded the tract to William Groome. The location of Charles Town was on the Patuxent River at Charles 2 CONT Branch. This is on the eastern boundary of Prince Georges County with Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties. A place called Cockholds Poynt is shown on this map just to the West of Charles Town, on Charles Branch. 1 NOTE Indenture of 30 March 1699 From: Teague Treacy of Anne Arundel County, Cooper To: Edward Fenix {Fenwick} of Prince Georges County Price: 8000 pounds of Tobacco Property: 150 acres, all of the land called "Cuckholds Poynt" in Prince Georges 2 CONT County on the south side of dividing creeks of Patuxent River; bounding on the land laid out for Thomas Truman, Esq. called "Dear Bought", land of Jeremiah Swillivan (Sullivan), land formerly laid out for Charles Brooke, and by the Creek. 2 CONT Signature: Teague Treacy (Mark) Wit: Will'm Stone, Edward Willet Ackn'd Teague Treacy and Mary his wife 27 June 1699. Recorded 1 June 1699 Vol A, p. 167. 1 NOTE The tract "Cuckholds Point" in Price Georges (then Calvert) County was originally patented by Ninan Beal. (Cert. Liber 16, folio 372, Petition Liber 14 folio 489). There is a resurvey of the tract for Edward Fenwick 27 Sept 1703. On 2 CONT resurvey, unoccupied and vacant land was added to bring it upto a total of 207 acres. There is no chain of title in Fenwicks petition (Liber CD folio 146) or certification (Liber CD folio 147) that indicates how Teague Tracey came into 2 CONT possession of this tract. 1 NOTE Teague Tracy's wife, Mary James, obtained Cuckholds Point from her father, Richard James. An extract of his will is in Vol 2 of the Maryland Calendar of Wills, and the will itself is in liber 4/folio 95 & 96. The will indicates that none of 2 CONT the five named daughters had obtained the age of 16 when the will was written. It therefore appears that Mary, the eldest, must have been born between 1669 and 1674. Thus, she was betwen 20 and 25 when she married Teague. 1 NOTE Four of their children were born in St. James Parish, Anne Arundel County, and are recorded in the Parish records. It is believed that they had another son, Basil, and perhaps a daughter, Mary, after they moved to Baltimore County. 1 NOTE The Inventory of Teague Tracy was signed by Susanna Tracy and Thomas Carr as next of kin. By the custom of the day, this implies they were "in-laws" (by todays terminology). Bond on Teague Tracey's estate was posted by Widow Mary, with Dutton 2 CONT Lane and Johnathan Hanson, on June 16, 1712. His estate was adminstered by Mary on July 22, 1713, and August 31, 1714.
