Mom used to help him in developing the photos until Rudy came 2 CONT along. 2 CONT "I was five years old (1921) when we moved to Detroit. Dad was the 2 CONT photographer at Arthur Studios. Certainly we were not wealthy, but we lacked 2 CONT nothing and it was a good, secure life. A nice home at 1301 Virginia Park, a 2 CONT new car -- a Buick, this time -- and cash only. Dad had a horror over being 2 CONT in debt. If he didn't have the money, he didn't buy. 2 CONT "Then came the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression began. 2 CONT It did not hit us until two years later. Brother George was a freshman at 2 CONT the University of Michigan and I must have been in my final year of Junior 2 CONT HIgh. Arthur Studios closed. Expenisve photos were not high priority those 2 CONT days. But in a fairly short time Dad was offered a job at a studio in Boston. 2 CONT So, in April, we put everything in storage and moved east. 2 CONT "We moved into a furnished apartment and our days were spent visiting all 2 CONT the war memorials and historic sites, which was an education in itself. By 2 CONT June, Mom had had enough and insisted that we find a house and send for our 2 CONT furniture. Dad gave in and we settled down in a house we loved in Arlington, 2 CONT Mass. George was loking forward to enrolling in MIT -- and then Dad came in 2 CONT one evening and announced that the studio had closed. He was now 59, and was 2 CONT facing the fact that his profession was at a dead end. 2 CONT "We moved back to Detroit, back came the furniture to storage. We found 2 CONT a terrible little furnished apartment; a most depressing place. Dad started 2 CONT looking for a job -- any job. And he found one. In those days, in the 2 CONT basement of Woolworth's and/or Kresge's 5 and 10 stores, you could find a 2 CONT tiny booth where a curtain could be closed after entering and for 25c a 2 CONT picture could be taken. That's what my dad did for $15 a week. Mom made 2 CONT jars of grape jelly and every day Dad would carry his jelly sandwich for his 2 CONT lunch. 2 CONT "Mom and Dad had only one couple who were close friends. Mr. Barbeau 2 CONT worked for Eastman Kodak Company, and he must have held a high position 2 CONT according to the way they lived. For years, he had tried to persuade Dad to 2 CONT apply at the company. Now, at last, Dad listened. Mr. Barbeau probably 2 CONT pulled some strings, for Dad travelled to Buffalo for an interview. Mr. 2 CONT Barbeau advised him to knock ten years off his age -- 50, not 60. He came 2 CONT back with a job -- $50 a week! 2 CONT "They gave him a territory in the southern part of Iowa. Just what he did 2 CONT I never knew but he sure did it well because his territory was increased to 2 CONT half of Iowa, then all of Iowa, and in time, nationwide. His title? special 2 CONT Representative of Eastman Kodak Co. 2 CONT "He would occasionally let us know that he had a demonstration and now it 2 CONT would be in Philadelphia. Mom's manipulative mind took over. The young man 2 CONT she had wanted me to marry had been transferred from Schenectady to 2 CONT Lancaster, PA. She decided we would go to Philly and see the demonstration 2 CONT and Johnny could meet us that evening and Dad could take us out for dinner. 2 CONT How thankful I am that we made that trip and I finally saw my father in 2 CONT action. I fairly burst with pride. " 1 NOTE Information obtained July 18, 1997 by RAD: 1 NOTE The National Archives in Washington, D.C., sent copies of Benjamin Downing' 2 CONT Civil War record. He served in D Company, 9th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry. 2 CONT He mustered in at Harrisburg, PA, at Camp Curtin, which was a major training 2 CONT station for over 300,000 volunteers during the Civil War. Records indicate the 2 CONT rank of Corporal. He was 19 years of age upon enlistment. The 9th Pa 2 CONT volunteers was mustered out 90 days later. He subsequently joined the 49th PA 2 CONT volunteers on April 8, 1862 and served until the end of the Civil War, rising 2 CONT to 1st Lieutenant. 1 NOTE On May 18, 1875, he applied for a pension. Then living in Uwchland, PA, ag 2 CONT 33, his application states the following. 1 NOTE "On this 18th day of May, 1875, before me, a Clerk of a Court of Record, in 2 CONT and for the county and state of Chester, PA, personally appeared Benjamin H. 2 CONT Downing, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the 2 CONT identical Benjamin H. He was a man of moderate means, perhaps master o 2 CONT some mechanical handicraft, and we may reasonably suppose him to have been on 2 CONT of that large body of England's Yeomanry, who, actuated by the combined motive 2 CONT of dread of the increasing encroachments of kingly and ecclesiastical power, 2 CONT doubt the issue of the fearful struggle then approaching, and the hope of 2 CONT bettering their worldly condition, left the Old England for the New, during th 2 CONT decade of years which followed 1630. The year of his arrival is unknown, but 2 CONT as early as 1639, and perhaps earlier, he occupied a house and four acres of 2 CONT land on the south side of Charles River, about six miles from Boston. He was 2 CONT one of the first settlers on that side of the river. The location can be 2 CONT readily identified, and is not far from the foot of Nonantum Hill. His house 2 CONT and land were confirmed to him on the Reocrds of the Proprietors of Cambridge 2 CONT in 1642, and the same records show that in Sep 1646 he sold his place to Edwar 2 CONT Jackson. Henseforth his name disappears from Massachusetts. 2 CONT He setled in New London, Connecticut in 1653 or sooner.
